Well at long last...here's thawolfman in the Evanescence thread!

(If you don't remember my fanatacism, here's my
Long Archived Evanescence Thread! with plenty of dead links!)
Anyways, I'm long over my insane obsession with the band, and in particular, Amy Lee, but I still love the music. The stuff from Fallen definitely got old fast, but with the amounts of unreleased, demo, and other material that I have, I really can't let go of the sound that pulled me in to start.
I never was really one to fight with the haters, and I still won't. You're all entitled to your opinion, and I'm fine with that. I've also listened to similar music that was recommended, namely Lacuna Coil, and it just didn't do it for me. I haven't checked out Nightwish yet, but I'm sure I'll get around to it!
So, to answer dwells original question...I can honestly answer that I don't know. Were they a fad? Maybe. Do they have staying power? Maybe. That can only really be told with a second (actually third) album. But regardless of what they do with their next album, I'll always have their old stuff to listen to, and that's just fine with me.
Alas, 'tis my duty to my fellow Evanescence fans, and hey, even for the haters:
