Dumb waitress last night

It was her third day on the job, so we cut her some slack when she didn't know the difference between new england steamers and regular steamed clams, and when she initially forgot to bring out the bread basket.

5 of us rang up a bill of $185. One of the girls had gotten a little short in cash, so we requested $30 to be charged on her debit card, and to put the rest on my credit card.

When we got our bills, $30 was charged to the debit card, but only $125 on mine. That's $30 short of what we owed. It took us a minute to realize why the numbers didn't add up, and when we did, we decided to just leave a tip based on $155 (instead of $185) and left. In all, we still paid less than the $185 we actually owed. Considering the service was pretty subpar, none of us felt bad about it.

What would you guys have done?

I probably would have pointed out the error, received a corrected bill, then deducted a bit from the tip for the inconvenience.

so, you walked out without paying your whole bill *and* didn't leave the waitress who forgot to charge you for the whole thing some extra bucks?

leave her extra bucks for shitty service? sounds reasonable.

I call forgetting to charge you for $30 pretty decent service 😉

I'd have left $200.

One time I went out for my sister-in-law's birthday to a steak place. The food was good etc, but the waitress was pretty horrendous. She was slow, absent-minded, and she "wasn't very familiar with the menu because she'd only been here 3 months."

3 months and she doesn't have the menu memorized front to back yet? Geez, I had it 90% memorized in the 30 minutes between she served us drinks and came to take our order.

Dick move on your part. She probably had to make up the difference out of her own pocket.

I've been in that situation and I have always asked the waiter/waitress to correct the bill. If the service is bad I will make an adjustment of the tip amount (down to 0% if the service is really bad), but I pay my whole bill.

I can sort of relate to that. I was at pizza hut a ways back grabbing their buffet. The waitress there was a grouchy old bat who apparently hated everybody under 50 years old, and didn't make much attempt to hide it. We never got the drinks we asked for from her, so we had to go to the counter to get them. Then when we were done, we asked for the check. She never brought it. We asked somebody else, who tried to go find her (supposedly). Never found her. We sat there for 15 minutes just waiting for a check, which never came. We went up to the counter to see if anybody was there and could help us. After waiting at the counter for a little while we just left.

Sometimes shit happens and you do what you have to do.

I wouldn't have stolen $30 worth of food.

You should call the place today and let them know you made an error on the bill and pay the remaining $30.

This. Was it busy? Sometimes people fuck up, and yes, sometimes it's inconvenient for you. Shorting her/the restaurant 30 bucks is hardly the solution. At absolute worst, don't tip her, but stealing on top of it? Way to go.

Definitely this, otherwise I would have felt like I was stealing.

Call the restaurant and pay the difference, but make sure THEY don't double dip...taking your $30 and taking it from the waitress as well.

Oh yes...and be sure to add in extra for the tip as well.

You could have fixed this last night.

Yeah it's amazing that people think stealing like this is fine.

also this is part of the reason many restaurants will allow cash and a credit card to be used, but not multiple cards.

The OP and four of his idiot friends knew they were stealing at dinner, what makes you think they will have a change of heart and give back what they stole?
