Sawyer said it! Way to go, my friend!

Nobody said anything about the "One of the girls had gotten a little short on cash" which is what started this fiasco in the first place.

Call me whatever you want to, but I've experienced way too many of these situations; people going out and living it up when they damn well can't afford to be doing so. How many of you have that "freeloading friend?" They guy/girl that either goes to the bathroom as soon as the waiter walks over w/the check or conveniently says "OH...$45? I only have $10...Bob, can you cover me?" And it's habitual?

Maybe the person in question isn't like that...I dunno; I don't know her. But the situation reminded me of people like here that I've known...and cut off for that very reason.

25 years ago when I was in high school (Yes; in fact I do know that I fart dust :p ) we had a guy like this in our group. After the dance/rally/game/whatever we'd go to the local diner. This guy would order enough food for 3 people and scarf as much as he could...and then disappear when the moment was right. He was like frickin' Houdini. One minute he had a burger in one hand and a BLT in the other. Look down to dip your fry in the ketchup and he's GONE.

So that's my contribution to this thread. I've got more stories...and I'm here all week.

Well lets see if I can quote without getting caught in a "quote time warp" thingy

I had one of them friends, son of bitch would dissappear into thin air every time it came to evening up. He had a knack for it. The thing is that he always had money and was tighter then a drum. Till one day one when we were at the bar with a $300 tab between 4 of us. He almost made the smoke when one of the guys said right to his face he would beat his ass if he skipped out. The guy went to get up saying he had to piss and the other guy laid one on his jaw. Dude went cold and slumped back into his chair. We took out his share of the tab and from that day on he always paid his share and that incident was never spoken of.

I said this before, but apparently people can't read. Your credit card slip is not the bill; it is your payment. She gave them a bill for $185, and they left credit card slips (+ cash?) totaling $180 on the table. The bill was correct, the credit card slips were wrong, whether it was the waitress's fault or not, the end result was that the OP and his friends walked out on $5 worth of the bill and did not leave a tip. That's not an issue of morals, it's a statement of fact. Whether or not he was right to skip out on a portion of the bill and leave no tip because of the sub-par service is a moral issue (and a legal issue).

I'm not sure what's worse - you being dishonest over a mistake, or you calling a woman dumb when she was only in her 3rd day on a new job.

:(

Right or wrong aside for a minute, I'm actually surprised at how one-sided the responses have been. I did a bit of searching online on the subject thinking someone must've done a study on this before, and found this:

"When you get a restaurant bill that doesn?t include a drink that you?d ordered, do you tell the waitress to revise the bill upward? If you do, you?re in the minority. According to Todd Giatrelis at restaurant consultants The Gates Group, fewer than 5% of customers correct a bill where there?s an error in their favor. Instead, they pay the smaller bill and the restaurant takes the loss."

not a good example since you got the right bill

I've done that before (pointed it out) and the result was that they comped the drinks. (Mind you this was a round of beers at a local microbrewery/restaurant).

I had this happen recently -- horrendous service from a really dumb waitress.

For starters, she brought me a hamburger when my buddy and I both ordered cheese steaks, and this was in a bar on cheese steak night so the wait for my cheese steak was going to be a long one so I ate the damn burger -- she also forgot drink orders, brought us NO napkins, NO condiments, and had a slack jawed "who me" and "what's the big problem?" attitude when we complained.

She then shorted herself big time on the bill, but I gritted my teeth and pointed it out to her and still left her a decent 20+% tip, even though we usually leave MUCH more and get GREAT service and comped drinks thereby from the regular wenches, who LOVE us.

My buddy was so disgusted, he was all for stiffing her, and he's not cheap.

I did it, I guess, because I actually ended up feeling sorry for her. She was THAT dumb.

Look at it this way: If the restaurant overcharged the customer by $30, but the customer never realized. Would they refund the $30 to the customer?

You don't look at the receipt before you sign at the restaurant? You don't call your CC if you see something wrong in your statement?

Look at it this way, *they saw the bill, they knew they were short*.

If the retaurant ripped the OP off, I would say the same damn thing, don't fucking steal. Is it really that hard a concept?

I probably would have pointed out the error, received a corrected bill, then deducted a bit from the tip for the inconvenience.

This

Same.

I lied.....:) Me and my wife went out tonight and ate a very nice dinner and the "new girl" charged us for two drinks we didn't order. We had her take them off and gave her a 16% tip. She was realy nice but stumbling..... we gave her an A for effort.

She probably played the part. I used to work with some waitresses that played so stupid their customers tipped them a bit extra thinking they would get fired shortly thereafter. i know because i used to bus these dumbasses tables and would see the tips left behind. too bad it never worked out for guys. :|
