Truckee man gets 25 to life for DUI under three-strikes law

By Bill Lindelof

A Truckee man with a long criminal history, including manslaughter, has been sent to prison under the state's "three-strikes" law.

Douglas Harold Doyle (left), 51, whose past crimes including an alcohol-related vehicular manslaughter conviction in which a Tahoe City schoolteacher was killed, was sent to prison for 25 years to life, according to a news release from the Placer County District Attorney's Office.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of drunk driving and was sentenced Feb. 2 by Placer County Superior Court Judge Colleen Nichols.

Placer County judges rejected Doyle's attempt to remove one or both of his previous felony strikes. Prosecutor Christopher Cattran cited Doyle's five felony convictions, four misdemeanor convictions and four prior state prison sentences, the release states.

Cattran noted that Doyle had been released on parole from prison just four months before he was stopped Aug. 17, 2008 for driving erratically on Highway 89 near Alpine Meadows Road. His blood alcohol level measured 0.13, according to Cattran.

Julie Fenley, the Tahoe City schoolteacher, was killed by Doyle in the 1987 on Highway 89. Her daughter, Kathleen Fenley, spoke at a pretrial hearing last year.

"My fear is that he will continue to drink and drive, continue to have a disrespect for the law and continue to commit crimes," she told the court.

Judge Larry Gaddis denied the motion to remove either of the two prior strikes at the August hearing. Doyle in December entered a guilty plea to his most recent DUI arrest, according to the release.

While he wasn't actually sent to prison FOR DUI, he WAS sent to prison BECAUSE of DUI.
Hell, I've advocated prison for DUI for years. This guy already killed one teacher while driving under the influence...he should have never been released. He has a lengthy police record.

Oh, and good. Serves the guy right, if you keep fucking up with your life, and the ample opportunities to improve are completely ignored, and you have shown indifference to the government's warnings, then fuck it - throw him in prison till he's dust.

"whose past crimes including an alcohol-related vehicular manslaughter conviction in which a Tahoe City schoolteacher was killed"

That's murder in my book, not manslaughter just because he was drunk. He chose to get drunk and drive and he wasn't insane, and the stupid fact he was drunk when he did it makes no difference at all once he gets behind the wheel. We fill jails up with potheads, and let these murdering scumbags out with a slap on the wrist for multiple GUIs and manslaughter.

I agree completely. Unfortunately, the liquor industry has better lobbyists than the marijuana industry...and for some fucked up reason, they have a better apparent reputation. Liquor is socially acceptable...marijuana is not.
I'm old enough to remember when DUI didn't get more than a slap on the wrist...if that. A wink & a nod...and a small fine, you were on your way.

Okay, I know 3 strikes really screws people over, but when it comes to issues like getting girls preggers, people say "don't stick it if you can't handle it."

Well in one way, 3 strikes makes you realize that you got 3 fucking chances. You foul once, twice, and I think it's obvious you should be freaking careful to begin with for the 3rd time. What about for all the law abiding citizens that never even get 1/3 of the 3 strikes? Then what do you say? What makes it SO HARD for someone at 2/3 to control them selves so they don't hit 3/3? Come on. It's common sense.

so he had 5 felony convictions before this? What is the big deal?

Also, this isn't a first. A guy in TX got life for a DUI a few years ago. IMHO, it needs to happen more.

I have no problem with this -- I wish more states would do it. There are people here in NC who have been arrested a dozen or more times for DUI and they keep letting them out.

yeah ok so i'm ok with him getting 25 to life fora DUI

Did actually hurt somebody?

If not then this is typical American fascistism at it again.

Did read thread?
He already killed someone with a vehicle. He then got another DUI. He went to prison deservedly.

IMO, if you get a vehicular manslaughter charge while driving drunk, and then drive drunk again, you should go down.

This guy didn't get life for a DUI, he got life because of his lifetime of law-breaking and disregard for the rights and safety of others.
