I heard that news about 8 months ago when they announced that it wouldn't be ported to the PS2

You didn't search hard enough. Carmack announced this when Doom III was first in the works.
Latest news says "Xbox and PC simultaneous launch."

Don't expect the performance of D00M III to be very good on the XBOX. I remember reading that Carmack was shooting for 30FPS on a GeForce3 class video card with no eye candy.
The XBOX is basically a 733 MHz Coppermine-128 (Celeron with 133 MHz FSB) and a modified GeForce3.
What I want to see is a Pentium-M based XBOX with a Radeon 9x00 series chip.

And there were even reports MS is trying to get a timed exclusive where the xbox version would be the only one available for a few months.

But he also said that if it couldnt play the way he envisioned it that it wouldnt have been available for that system, thus the reason ps2 and gamecube are not getting it.

The Xbox trailer featured equal or better graphics compared to what we've seen from the PC version recently, with near-perfect modeling and lighting from its grisly monsters and run-down underground environments
