FFS - find some other way to generate revenue - we get bombarded with enough crap as it is - excessive amount of junk mail, donationwhores standing in front of stores, donationtards who knock on your door and can't read "no solicitation" posted in plain visible sight, etc.

Sorry, I've seen too many systems infected with malware even from well intentioned sites because of malicious scripts embedded in flash ads. Plus I do typically see a delay in page loads because of the flash ads since they're typically run from a slower server. I've removed anandtech from adblock however I have not removed it from noscript. I have yet to see a single ad, it seems that Anandtech has chosen to do only flash ads and no static ads :( . Btw it's not because I'm not willing to help the site out with funding, I was a long time subscriber when the option was available.

Could not possibly give a fuck, sorry.

I was an AT subscriber and would glady do it again.. but I'm sure as hell not going to view ads or flash or embedded script anywhere unless I specifically want to.

meh. maybe if AT's ads weren't garbage that are slow as hell and for some reason prioritized to load before anything else (love waiting two minutes for a page to load while it talks to the ad server).

Yikes!, 73% usage here, 3Ghz C2D 4G ram, both cores showed busy although I'm not sure if that's accurate. If I were using my bedroom PC (Celeron dual core@2Ghz, 2Gb ram) it might cause a noticeable slowdown. What kind of idiot codes an ad that does that?, it's going to drive people away in droves if their machines start chocking trying to handle that..
Probably someone in a graphics department who couldn't tell the difference between a hard drive and a monitor, who might also be running some quad-core thing with a crazy video card.

Their only goal is to make it look pretty.

honestly, what adds at Anandtech are THAT horribly distracting? There are 2 banner ads. One at the top, which goes out of site the second you scroll down to the 3rd message in a thread, and one on the left, that you generally can't see until you scroll down to the 3rd message. I don't EVER recall a horribly annoying/flashing/neon colored/with sound ad ever on Anandtech.

There was a Verizon ad last week that was preventing pages from loading and displaying properly. They slip through occasionally even on this site. Fortunately AT does do something about them when brought to their attention. Jeff7 pretty much hit the nail square on the head.

What Anand should have done with the switch to vB is had a subscribe option where you pay x amount and it removes ads, allows you a custom avatar, and custom title.

All I've seen is the one static jpeg ad and nothing else since I unblocked the forums. Too bad, so sad.

I'm guessing this is because the flash ads bring in more revenue than the non flash ads. It wasn't too terribly long ago though that there were non flash ads that would display on occasion on the forums. Come to think of it a few of them actually drew my interest and got a click-through and one or two might've even managed a purchase from that click through. I think we may have a few too many advertisers that are too used to flash.

What Chrome adblocker works the same as ABP for firefox? I haven't found one

don't think the browser allows that yet...

Honestly, it's ok though. Most people use FF because they think it's "safer." They use Google Chrome because it's "google." I asked a friend why she used IE8 at work and she said because it clears all her privacy when she exits. True, I found that option in the early days of IE8. I didn't bother to look around FF and Chrome, but I'm sure it's possible... not to mention the private modes that are on all browsers nowadays.

And when I posted I switched to Chrome, a bunch of my stupid friends were like "Oh about time, I've been using it forever!" I go IM each of them and ask if they use extensions and they ask "What are those?"

I'm pretty confident so many FF and Chrome users don't even know anything about extensions/addons. Why FF is so cool is you can do all these greasemonkey scripts. When I first found out about Greasemonkey, I saw all the Facebook scripts to allow you to pwn in all those Facebook games, I thought it was hilarious. I would install and beat a bunch of random friends who spend all their time playing. But of course most people don't even venture down that area of Greasemonkey.

In turn, the message to advertisers:
- Irritating, flashing, moving ads don't make me want to buy your product. They instead generate an increasing desire to inflict injury. Pop-ups are in a similar class.
- Sound in ads is not ok.
- If your adserver is slow, and is constantly holding up page loads, that increases chances of earning a block. dynamic2.anandtech.com was like this - it would constantly cause pages to take considerably longer to load, sometimes to the point of causing a timeout and failed pageload.
- If I find that your Flash advertisement is generating a significant CPU load, that also increases the chance of earning a block.

- I paid for the subscription option back when it was available, and might consider something like that if it were offered again.

Ahahaha! advertisers who actually listen to the people that they advertise to.

that's just precious.

If the ads here werent all flash based and animated I would disable ad block here, but they slow the site down and and are horribly distracting.

I've never used an ad blocker. People are really that bothered by a small box on the top and bottom of a page?

The worst thing that happens is you have to manually close a pop up.

That's a wonderful mentality

The sites have to cover their costs, it's not like webservers and bandwidth are free.

i willingly gave money to AT when they had a subscription to get rid of the ads

I used to only selectivily block then but that just got annoying

if ads were simply plain color txt ads i wouldn't block anything but the flash/gifs/sound/ whatever forces me to block them

hosts file FTW
