if ads were simply plain color txt ads i wouldn't block anything but the flash/gifs/sound/ whatever forces me to block them

hosts file FTW

Flashblock works pretty well. It gets rid of the real garbage and leaves the plain stuff. It kind of splits the difference between a total whitelist, and a total blacklist.

honestly, what adds at Anandtech are THAT horribly distracting? There are 2 banner ads. One at the top, which goes out of site the second you scroll down to the 3rd message in a thread, and one on the left, that you generally can't see until you scroll down to the 3rd message. I don't EVER recall a horribly annoying/flashing/neon colored/with sound ad ever on Anandtech.

I recall many ads on AT with sound, inappropriate content, and distracting flash animations. Have they stopped using those? I haven't checked for a while. And I, like others, would rather pay a "no ads" fee to come here than risk unblocking given the past Ads I've seen here.

In turn, the message to advertisers:
- Irritating, flashing, moving ads don't make me want to buy your product. They instead generate an increasing desire to inflict injury. Pop-ups are in a similar class.
- Sound in ads is not ok.
- If your adserver is slow, and is constantly holding up page loads, that increases chances of earning a block. dynamic2.anandtech.com was like this - it would constantly cause pages to take considerably longer to load, sometimes to the point of causing a timeout and failed pageload.
- If I find that your Flash advertisement is generating a significant CPU load, that also increases the chance of earning a block.

- I paid for the subscription option back when it was available, and might consider something like that if it were offered again.

This.

AND... if you use any sort of ad agency that uses behavioral advertising or user tracking, it will also get a block from me.
AND... if you use any sort of ad agency that attempts to use Java in ads (yep, I've see this before), it will also get a block from me.
AND... if you use any sort of ad that attempts to glean any information out of my browser aside from user-agent, you're going to get a block from me.
AND... if you place ads that significantly impair the layout of your site in my browser, it will also get a block from me.

I use Chrome and there is no adblocker that I know of. I have never used an adblocker but there are sites like dailytech which I think the average IQ of the readers is 70 (and they do their best to pander to them so I would not mind an adblocker for them).
