I block AD's simply because they are annoying and distract and clutter up my web pages. I stopped subscribing to all the mags I used to read because AD's made reading them very unpleasant.

Haha you just reminded me of all the annoying ads in magazines that spring up like daisies as one turns the pages! The first thing I used to do was flip through a new magazine and rip out every pop out ad and toss them in the trash bin! Then I could read peacefully...turn to page 104 (Popular Mechanics) was not some mission to dodge a flurry of popping post cards purposefully made of stiff paper just to make you mad! :sneaky:

I've never ran an adblocker, they don't bother me that much.

I only block ads that I find obnoxious, like pop-up ads, really ugly Flash ads, ads with sound, and those repetitive "personalized" Facebook ads. Most of Anandtech's ads are OK.

Is the term Earth Side really used? I would have thought it would be Land Side or something similar.

We use the term "Earth side," or "Earth station" as well. Any data we receive or send on the ship, goes to space and back, hehe.

As for referring personnel, or equipment, we say, "shore side," and not land side :p

Even in spite of all this; the correct pronunciation is NYE-KON. :p

omg... Ze Females.. They never forget arguments years past :(. Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-kon! :(

I have just disabled ad blocking for this site.

As long as the ads are not too annoying. I will not block them.
If they start flashing or blinking enough to be distracting or any sound enabled ads show up ... two clicks of the mouse.

I would like to see the subscribe option come back.

Back when I still subscribed to magazines, that was always the first thing I did as well. :)

I would love to pay for the subscriber service again.

I normally don't chime in on this topic because its a lose/lose but I feel like typing.

I used to click on ads to support sites that I liked. But then the ads got more annoying and the sites stopped checking the ads. Way too much spyware/malware/bullshit out there for me to even think about clicking on an ad now. I would happily pay for my AT membership, but I'm not going to spend 3 hours cleaning up my system because I clicked on a crappy ad that led to a crappy website that was advertising a crappy product.

I'll paypal $60 right now to not have to look at ads and to have a private forum for subscribers so that we don't have to worry about idiots at work clicking on the wrong forum.

Ads suck.

So many ads seem scandalous so I don't even click them. Then you have the ones that say stuff like "Impossible IQ question inside"... If it's impossible then I already have no reason to click your ad. Seriously people. Then there are the ones that seem to purposely try to annoy me.

Make truthful, informative ads and I will click them. Keep making bullshit about how a single dad discovered the secret to looking like a body builder and it will never get touched.

I wouldn't block it if it wasn't slowing the forum down. that dynamic2.anandtech.com is just too slow.

Just disabled it on atot and seems to not be slowing down now like before. Will leave it on as long as it performs at this level.

In turn, the message to advertisers:
- Irritating, flashing, moving ads don't make me want to buy your product. They instead generate an increasing desire to inflict injury. Pop-ups are in a similar class.
- Sound in ads is not ok.
- If your adserver is slow, and is constantly holding up page loads, that increases chances of earning a block. dynamic2.anandtech.com was like this - it would constantly cause pages to take considerably longer to load, sometimes to the point of causing a timeout and failed pageload.
- If I find that your Flash advertisement is generating a significant CPU load, that also increases the chance of earning a block.

- I paid for the subscription option back when it was available, and might consider something like that if it were offered again.

absolutely agreed. if there were a subscription offered, i would pay instantly.

Fortunately, I spend most of my time here when I'm at work on ie6 with no type of adblock... So I'm doing my part at least 5 days a week. I've even clicked on a few ads

I'll stop blocking adds when the advertisers adopt a code of ethics and learn some manners.

Written for Ars but I'm sure it applies here too.:hmm:

http://arstechnica.com/business/new...king-is-devastating-to-the-sites-you-love.ars

Even Roger Ebert retweeted this, so spread the word.

Ars doesn't seem to mind people skipping commercials with their DVRs. They basically seem to openly mock the television/advertising industries when they try to do something to combat commercial skipping on DVRs. Their position seems to be, "people are going to skip commercials, get over it."

Yet someone blocking ads on their site is problem? It is hard to take such an article seriously coming from them.

Why don't they just put content in flash, ads inside that flash so you can't block it?

Sorry Anand, even a small blinking unset DVD clock below 50" plasma drives me crazy. My HDD lights bug me. (BTW what's up with those 500000W blue LED's nowadays on cases??) I'm definitely not into major movement on screen with annoying ads.

I did white-list/unscript you for a few minutes just to see if I could deal with it....Bring subscriptions back.

I tried the ads here. Twice they locked up Firefox tight as a drum. Adblock is back on, but I'd be willing to reconsider with better policing of the provided ads.

They use that click through thing when someone links to a site like newegg or amazon. At first NONE of the links worked for me so I had to inform the owners to fix it for me. :D

Speaking of annoying ads remember the shoot the monkey and win $20 one? I remember a really annoying ad on 2CPU.com (around 2001 or so) that had a cheeseburger that moved up and down with a flashing border. It was so annoying I wanted to stab my screen with a fork!

I've never really seen ads. Back in that era I was using Tiny Personal Firewall which had extensive ad blocking.

Oh I forgot about hosts file..remember those?

Earlier this evening my SO opened Firefox which loaded her homepage (yahoo). She then tried to open a bookmark from the bookmark menu, but the mouse was terribly sluggish and she started cursing it. I looked over and saw a flash ad on the yahoo page, and immediately told her it was the flash ad.

She argued with me that yahoo has had flash ads before and it's never been sluggish like this, but I persisted and she re-enabled AdBlock (she disables it to watch her soap on cbs.com but doesn't always re-enable it). As if by magic her Athlon64 X2 4400+ machine was no longer sluggish!

Fuck flash ads! :thumbsdown::mad:
