I block AD's simply because they are annoying and distract and clutter up my web pages. I stopped subscribing to all the mags I used to read because AD's made reading them very unpleasant.
Is the term Earth Side really used? I would have thought it would be Land Side or something similar.
Even in spite of all this; the correct pronunciation is NYE-KON.![]()
We use the term "Earth side," or "Earth station" as well. Any data we receive or send, goes to space and back, hehe.
As for referring personnel, or equipment, we say, "shore side," and not land side![]()
Haha you just reminded me of all the annoying ads in magazines that spring up like daisies as one turns the pages! The first thing I used to do was flip through a new magazine and rip out every pop out ad and toss them in the trash bin! Then I could read peacefully...turn to page 104 (Popular Mechanics) was not some mission to dodge a flurry of popping post cards purposefully made of stiff paper just to make you mad! :sneaky:
I have just disabled ad blocking for this site.
As long as the ads are not too annoying. I will not block them.
If they start flashing or blinking enough to be distracting or any sound enabled ads show up ... two clicks of the mouse.
I would like to see the subscribe option come back.
Truth + marketing = 0So many ads seem scandalous so I don't even click them. Then you have the ones that say stuff like "Impossible IQ question inside"... If it's impossible then I already have no reason to click your ad. Seriously people. Then there are the ones that seem to purposely try to annoy me.
Make truthful, informative ads and I will click them. Keep making bullshit about how a single dad discovered the secret to looking like a body builder and it will never get touched.
Truth + marketing = 0
In turn, the message to advertisers:
- Irritating, flashing, moving ads don't make me want to buy your product. They instead generate an increasing desire to inflict injury. Pop-ups are in a similar class.
- Sound in ads is not ok.
- If your adserver is slow, and is constantly holding up page loads, that increases chances of earning a block. dynamic2.anandtech.com was like this - it would constantly cause pages to take considerably longer to load, sometimes to the point of causing a timeout and failed pageload.
- If I find that your Flash advertisement is generating a significant CPU load, that also increases the chance of earning a block.
- I paid for the subscription option back when it was available, and might consider something like that if it were offered again.
<--*also waits for Hell to freeze*I'll stop blocking adds when the advertisers adopt a code of ethics and learn some manners.
Written for Ars but I'm sure it applies here too.:hmm:

Even Roger Ebert retweeted this, so spread the word.
