Only problem I occasionally have with these forums is the ad stalling the page and making it time out. I use the refresh button then. The forum jump menu being so far below the thread is far more annoying.

So you run the entire ship through a proxy which removes ads? I suppose it does image compression and other stuff like that?

No not the entire ship. They are on MTN which does other things but ads are usually allowed. Things like skype and magic jack are blocked though.

On my connection there is lots of things going on to improve speed. Even videos are cached so if I watch something on youtube or let it completely download I can come back a month later and the video plays instantly. That's nice but I've sent out links that play here but not anywhere else because they may get taken down!

I guess you could say it works like a proxy internally. There's equipment on the ship side and the shore side connected all the time like a persistent VPN.

I agree on flash ads though. I have P3 based notebook that's nearly impossible to surf without ads being stripped. Youtube videos kill the cpu quick. HD video? Forget about that.

Another thing is embedded sound! There is nothing worse (and embarrassing!) to open a page and suddenly Rick Astley starts playing through a PA system and hundreds of people get Rick Rolled. (never mind people that have no idea what Rick Roll means and the ones that do work here and know it from ME!)

I find the page load time to be drastically improved with adblocking. I'm not going to wait for somebody to show me an ad. If you're going to advertise to me, make it convenient. Put the ads on a fast server.

Another thing I love about ABP is that I can block individual pictures or entire directories. For instance, some has an avatar that annoys me, right click-block, it's gone! Someone keeps posting stupid pictures, right click-block directory, now everything this bozo posts it blocked! Win!

Fat chance of that happening.
Matter of fact ads get hosted on a shoestring budget often with out of date servers. Many get rooted and thus are the source of infection, etc.

Well, I found another problem with turning AdBlock off. AdBlock turns out to be a really good way to block certain other things, like say the image resizer script on these forums. Anyone know a good way to block individual items with AdBlock disabled?

When I used it on Chrome 4 or whatever and the Adthwart version I noticed. I'll go back to Chrome at version 7 with Adthwart version 99999999999999. >_> Maybe then they'll have fixed it. It isn't fixed if they still load at all, PERIOD.

Dennil's point is that if you don't download the ads, you aren't helping to pay for the forums. Chrome still downloads the ads, but hides them from you. Ergo, you are supporting the forums.

I find to increase page load time ads should be put at the very last part of the page, then use CSS to place them in the right spot physically. That's what I do most of my sites. Even if they do stall at least the whole page is done loading.

Flash ads will never be unblocked.
Animated gifs will never be unblocked.
Ads with audio will never be unblocked.
Pop ups/unders will never be unblocked, and if you have one of those javascript tricks that pops up when I click anywhere on the page, all plugins will be blocked for that site.
Those annoying in-text pop up ads (when you mouse over text) will never be unblocked.
Google's text ads were allowed, until the one day they threw me a curve and displayed an animated gif, so now even Google ads will never be unblocked.

Moral of the story: basic text ads are ok, all others will be blocked.

Sorry but bandwidth and security concerns prevent the remote side of the network from loading anything like that here. It's done on the Earth side by firewall so whether the host has adblocking configured or not they never reach a host PC.

The ocean isn't part of the Earth now!? :p

Why doesn't Adblock have whitelisting? There's some sites I visit that I know won't have jacked up ads and would view them (like this one) but I don't want to completely disable adblocking.

You can disable it on a site-site basis, fyi.

Ok, I tried unblocking dynamic2.anandtech.com, but got flash ads, so I disabled plugins (disables Flash) and will try to leave it unblocked. If the forums don't work without plugins then I'll just go back to blocking dynamic2.anandtech.com. I now see one ad on the left, but since it is a JPEG I will let it be, for now.

Yup, our earthside firewall block all ads as well. Our ship simply does not have the bandwidth to waste on any ad of any form. Most video sites have been blocked too, and so have anything with the extension .flv.

We have skype, google talk (only the video and stuff), live messenger (only video) all blocked.

the priority of our internet is for science, and real-time data to get to shore.

For anything I notice that I need to block otherwise, I just modify the squid proxy onboard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhgt8AC5qBE Video quality sucks right now, but I did upload it at 1280x720 just a few minutes ago.

Using Google Chrome 5.0.342.2 Dev and the latest AdThwart. Not only does it fuck up the formatting of the page while it loads... It STILL SHOWS THE ADVERTISEMENTS!

Okay, finally done processing. You can see it in 720P now to get the full advertisement hit that Google Chrome STILL gives you.

I've understood this for years, and have never used an ad blocker.

In fact, I'll even click on an ad a few times a week to give a site some extra cash :)

I never used add blocker because adds are not that big of a deal to me.

Good idea, I will start clicking on adds once in a while in here.

Well of course it is otherwise they could technically say I'm on a spaceship. That's a little too far out - even for me! ;)

Earth side refers to the mainland station that connects to the real internet. Everything HERE has to go to space unless I'm lucky enough to have wifi access from shore.

Even in spite of all this; the correct pronunciation is NYE-KON. :p

In turn, the message to advertisers:
- Irritating, flashing, moving ads don't make me want to buy your product. They instead generate an increasing desire to inflict injury. Pop-ups are in a similar class.
- Sound in ads is not ok.
- If your adserver is slow, and is constantly holding up page loads, that increases chances of earning a block. dynamic2.anandtech.com was like this - it would constantly cause pages to take considerably longer to load, sometimes to the point of causing a timeout and failed pageload.
- If I find that your Flash advertisement is generating a significant CPU load, that also increases the chance of earning a block.

- I paid for the subscription option back when it was available, and might consider something like that if it were offered again.

Is the term Earth Side really used? I would have thought it would be Land Side or something similar.
