Exactly. Isn't that the beauty of tipping? If nobody tipped, expect poor service everywhere you go. There is no "moving up" in the waitress world, so the only real incentive is to tip to keep them working hard.
Service has been fine for me in countries that do not have a tipping culture.
Most people here have no real idea. Probably half those posting about lousy tipping still have mom or dad covering their meals.
Tipping for service is a given. A better tip is warranted for extraordinary service based on the typical level you should get. People are ignorant to expect getting the same service at a Fridays with a waiter covering several tables than a 5 star restaurant with several waiters covering one table. The food costs adjust the tip amounts accordingly. These same types of people go into a restaurant with a free meal coupon and figure the tip is free too.
