Here is what happened:

Went to restaurant with friend
Order food
She got my order wrong (asked for no onions)
She hot his order wrong (asked for half a sandwich got a whole) It looked like it would be half a club so he ate it anyway
She brought the check, We wanted it split and she charged my friend for the full price.
She went back and corrected the amount but did not split it
We wait for like 20 mins each time she leaves
Eventually have to get another waitress to split the check for us.
we are like 1 of 3 groups there...her only table.

I got the split bill and didn't tip cause she wasted my time, didn't get the order right, and was rude. I forgot my cell phone and went back to get it. She came back handed it to me and said THANK YOU in such a bitchy way it was impressive.

Do you guys always tip? I've had bad experiences before where the waiter was rude and I didn't want to tip but my brother did for me anyway. Why tip of they aren't going to do their job right...its not charity.

EDIT: Yes I have worked in the food industry before and have served people.

NOT ANOTHER TIPPING THREAD
END THIS MADNESS
PLZ LOCK THIS THREAD
OMG!!! OH NO! AIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! NOOOOOO!O!OO!O!!!!

In a situation like that, I'd tip a single penny. That way she'd know I didn't just forget to leave a tip.

I only tip when the service was good. Otherwise, what's the point?

Yeah. Tips are meant to reinforce good service and punisch poor service. Unfortunately in today's society where people feel like they're entitled to everything, that they'll see you as the bad person.

No, I certainly would not tip in that situation. Tipping is and always should be based on performance.

why do we even have to tip? we're paying them for doing their jobs

I did not make the thread to discuss the points of tipping....

just in this case

Well everyone will come in here complaining and justifying why they are cheap bastards and won't tip. Especially pizza delivery guys who have to drive their car all over town in stop and go traffic in 100 degree weather and pay for every single expense in the book. Hell no, they don't deserve a tip. And then you'll hear the crowd that says "WELL WHY DONT THEY JUST INCLUDE IT LOL OR PAY A FAIR WAGE ROFLMAO!!!!!11" Well, wouldn't the perfect way provide an incentive to do a good job? Or what if you went to a restaurant that just automatically threw in 5 dollars for a tip for each table? I don't think many people would be returning there.

Exactly. Isn't that the beauty of tipping? If nobody tipped, expect poor service everywhere you go. There is no "moving up" in the waitress world, so the only real incentive is to tip to keep them working hard.

Service has been fine for me in countries that do not have a tipping culture.

next time split your own check or order separate.

I usually tip 10% for mediocre service and 20% for very good service.

For service THAT bad, though, a penny tip sounds about right.

I would leave a very small tip as well, somthing in the area of 2% so they know you didn't forget.

Also I find it funny that these threads keep popping up & that theres always a few people who defend never tipping regardless of the service they receive ... its simple, here in the USA tips are not built into the tab AND waiters are paid considerably less then a normal worker because they make money from tips which compensates.

If you don't tip for good service you are a complete jerk & should stick to the McDonalds drive-through when dining out.

You ever see Waiting? If you frequent the restaurant you better tip...or else you'll end up with "special sauce" on your order...

I tip when the service is good; i.e. glass is refilled in a timely manner, food is brought out nice and hot and not lukewarm from being under the warming lamp, order is accurate and complete, etc. If everything goes good I'll tip upwards of 20%...the amount goes down depending...and can go up in some cases.

i always tip. the amount of the tip can range from a couple dimes to 30%. if the wait staff is good, its usually a roundabout 20% or so, and if im entertained by a great wait staff its upwards of 30%. if its the crotchety old bag at dennys that cant be bothered to refill drinks or even come check to see if youre done after 45 or so minutes, it will be a couple dimes and a comment on how it would be more if she had actually waited on us. ive done that before, and the next time i went there the service was much better, making their tips much better.

i was a waiter for a long time, i know how it is to wait on people that expect and think they deserve everything for free. i still got good tips, but i was good.
