no and no. After almost 12 years of working experience, I came to the conclusion that being a moron has nothing to do with having or not having a degree.

No way. I've known some brilliant people without a degree and worked with some real idiots that got one. (Also vice versa though..you never know until you get to know the person)

I think too many people are forced to get a degree to get a job these days that it really takes some of the merit of really "learning" out of it.

We'd be better off with more certifications and less degrees I think.

not having a degree means 1 of 2 things:

you were too stupid to get a degree

you were too much of a fuckup to get a degree

or both

I was just watching Good Will Hunting from my Tivo. A degree is only relevant in that it's a milestone; it states that someone was able to persevere through college long enough to obtain it. It has no real relationship to how intelligent someone is.

Why in the hell would anyone define their life based on paper? Yes I have a degree, and no I don't care who has or doesn't have one. Work is how you pay for how you want to live, it doesn't define you.

I do however find myself being respectful of MDs though. That's a lot of crap they have to go through just to pull things out others butts.

I have a degree and I fail, so anyone who voted they think more of someone with a degree automatically fails too.

Actually, for a worker in Bill's field (financial management) I would tend to think less of someone w/o a decree.

However, overall, absolutely not. The apprentice/journeyman system in the trades produces mostly extremely competent people. In a variety of fields, degrees are simply not needed. Various certifications certainly help identify folks with the qualifications one is looking for. One hiring someone for trades work (plumber, electrician, roofer) I look for licensed contractors. When looking for an auto mechanic, I look for those certificates on the wall. The type of education (college, tech school, apprenticeship) should fit the type of work.

Conversely, the lack of a degree does not mean that a person is not worthy. It is your B and C students who will someday dedicate a building.

A degree does not guarantee success and the lack of a degree does not guarantee failure.

Or who are unemployed because they refuse to work such a 'menial job' that is 'so far below their abilities'..

I think your Bill Gates' are the exception, not the norm.

to me, it depends on the person and the circumstances... I like my brother-in-law a lot and he's very good at what he does, but I do think less of him because he never went to college. it wasn't for lack of opportunity, he was just lazy. and I think not bothering with college is often a sign of intellectual laziness. I work in IT and see it in a lot of my colleagues who only went to some place like chubb or something.

right now, my boss doesn't have a degree... and yes, he's my boss, but he's kinda capped out right now on where he's going to go with his career while I only look at this job as a place to get experience to supplement my degree and pay the rent till I can move onto something better.

OTOH, I certainly don't respect anyone more just because of a diploma. I went to school with a lot of people I wouldn't even trust to get lunch for me.

What is this, the 60s? All a degree proves is you were able to graduate from university.

I had to deal with an insurance adjuster who was initially a rude asshole until he asked me how I was involved. When I told him I was the attorney he became so apologetic that it was almost uncomfortable.

I don't think less of anybody without a degree - else I would have to cease relationships with my friends who never went to college. Also my father never went to college and I sure as shit don't think less of him for it.

Likewise I typically do not think any higher of somebody with a bachelor's degree. However I do tend to be relatively impressed with those holding graduate and/or professional degree. I see that as an above and beyond achievement that may be a reasonable indicator of their personality.

I don't care if you have a college degree or not.

I only think less of someone with no HS degree. Some might be an exception, but most are losers and of lesser quality.

Strangely enough, if someone doesn't have a degree I don't think less of them, however, there are some degrees that cause me to think less of a person for getting them. (Liberal Arts, I'm looking directly at you). If you get a degree, get one that will benefit you in the future, not one that is a waste of money.

That's a wee bit arrogant.

Who are you to judge what somebody chooses to get a degree in or otherwise how it will benefit them?

very original, i swear that i've never heard of this before.

and for you two beacons of wisdom, how am i wrong?

modern society places alot of emphasis on education and it shows in the amount of income that those peope earn above then mean than the average people. In such a society, why woudl an intelligent person not go to college? Having a college degree my not always mean much, especially your community college degrees, but no having a college degree says alot about what people should expect from you.

And that proves alot, at least relative to those that weren't able to do it.

No, No.

A degre doesn't make you anything special...you just have a bit more "book schooling" as compared to "life schooling," which, depending on the industry, COULD be more valuable.

I worked construction for 30+ years and made an average of $85K over the past 10 years...with a GED.

I tend to judge people by their character and work ethic, not their education level.

Some of the stupidest people I've ever known had college degrees...a couple had master's degrees...and were so fucking dumb (in real-life metrics) that they could barely walk and chew gum.

No siree...a college education doesn't make you anything special.

If you have no talent then you better have a degree otherwise you'll be talentless and degreeless and that would just suck.

That is a false choice, imo college educated people have far superior 'life schooling' as well.
