when I was looking at Edmunds last november, they were getting deals on Acura TL 2006 with Nav for 32,000 +TTL but for Lexus IS350 with Navi 2006 you were looking at $40,000 because of stupid packages.

Yeah, now go price an IS350 with premium package, navigation, and premium sound. The most expensive OPTION package they offer is like $11,000. The TL Type S comes with Navigation standard. I guarantee the base 350 doesn't have all the options that a Type S does. But, this is obviously an argument that is going nowhere, some people will always believe that Car X > Car Y, no matter what. I guess it doesn't really matter to me, since I've over my (brief) Lexus kick.

Well as far as dealers go, there are bad and good for both.
Case in point,
Went to a Lexus dealer, sat down, said we wanted an IS. Guy says "name a price". We name a price and he shakes our hands and says goodbye, no need to waste anybody's time.
While we are driving out of the lot he runs out in front of us and basically pleads his case that NO one would sell it to us at that price and offered a slightly lower price...well we went to another dealer and got a better price from a dealer who treated us like human beings.

There, good and bad from Lexus.

For the classes in which they compete, Acura is all over Lexus, but they don't cover all the same ground.

try putting some options on that base 350 and see what you come up with...the TL is fairly loaded for a base model...

Sporty Midsize
GS > TL (Price diff exists)

Smaller Sports Sedan
IS >= TL,TSX (IS ~ TL in price)

However, I do feel that Acura has more of an edge in the SUV dept (RDX/MDX) Although it's hard to beat the RX...you see so many of them for a reason.

I always thought the ES was supposed to face off with the TL. The RL is supposed to match the GS. It's more of price comparison.

Maybe price-wise, but the target crowd for the ES doesn't have a great amount of overlap with that of the TL.

To me they are both same/similar, both of them are "upper scale/more expensive" vehicles from Toyota and Honda. But I like the MDX body styling better than RX.

The perception is Lexus > Acura. Good job from Lexus marketing machine.

They definitely appeal to different people. Having owned several Integra's, and helped work on several cheapo Integra's, I will say they are well constructed cars. Nowhere near the cruising ability of a RWD Lexus V8, or even the GS300 with it's I6. (Probably has higher displacement by now, but I am only speaking of the ones I have driven).

Lexus has just recently surpassed the near-luxury level of Acura and is now on a level of their own between near-luxury and premium luxury (mbz, bmw).

This is nothing new - Acura is aware of it's tweener image. Expect Acura to start moving up though - they're weening their lineup away from FWD vehicles, in favor of Honda's SH-AWD. Gone is the RSX, which has been replaced by Honda's Civic Si. The next generation NSX is just around the corner, with a V10. The redesigned TSX comes out this fall, the new TL will arrive next year. I'd say they're competing more with Audi than Lexus, positioning themselves as a sporty luxury manufacturer.

Now, if they could just provide a true luxury flagship sedan like the LS, or the A8, instead of the RL..........

I own an acura and i agree.. Lexus just have been putting out really good cars.. compared to acura...

but i do find some of these lexus looks too big for me to drive..

While I agree that an even better luxury flagship would be a welcome addition to the Acura line, my parents just bought an RL, and it is easily one of the best sedans out there (even compared to the LS and A8).

1. Salespeople do not like wasting their time on someone they perceive will not/cannot buy a car.
2. Salespeople are not necessarily the smartest people in the world (most of them do not seem to have masters degrees, from my informal poll ) and, thus, sometimes say the dumbest things.

I agree - the RL is a fantastic vehicle. It's powerful, has excellent handling, has excellent materials/fit and finish, and is jammed packed with technology - but it lacks in perception and presence, which, unfortunately, sells luxury cars.

Hell - if I were on the market, I would definitely consider one.

Lexus is harder for Asians to pronounce . There is no 'L' or 'X' in Japanese as they're changed to 'R' and 'KS'. Not to mention two constants in a row are never pronounced like that as you add a subtle 'u' into it.

The idea of luxury cars is also very dependent on what society as a whole sees as luxury. Acura had the NSX in America (they were Honda branded in Japan since I believe Acura didn't exist in Japan for the longest time) but I'd say the price tag kept them from widespread adoption. So really, what does Acura have that helps define them as luxury? Not much and that's why people don't consider them as luxury, because the idea of luxury is defined by everyone else. That's why even though my Nissan Altima 3.5SL has pretty much all the features of a luxury car, no one would consider it luxury

Those may not have been the exact words, but a pompous salesman may not want to "waste his time" on a buyer that won't go through. Although, personally I think Audi is a lot higher than Lexus... especially the new R8 :Q.

Having driven most of the high end lexus models and owning an Acura TL, I'd say the Acura's are nicer if you still enjoy the thrill of driving, while the Lexus has better name branding. Lexus sounds better, but after driving and comparing features, I opted for the TL over the IS. Both very nice vehicles though.
