It reminded me of a rant from Bob Dumas of Bob and the Showgram here in Raleigh, NC a few years ago. He told a story about how he went to McDs to get a Big Mac value meal or something of the sort. It was straight off the menu... he didn't order anything special or give special instructions. Just the meal.

He got up to the second window after paying and they told him to "pull-up" and they would bring his food out. He told them:

"No, I've paid for fast food, and I'm going to wait here until you give me my food."
They replied with "You are holding up the line."
To which he replied "No, YOU are holding up the line. I didn't order anything special. Just a damn Big Mac."

The person argued with Bob back and forth and the manager eventually came to the windows (people in cars behind are getting pissed and blowing their horns). Apparently on that particular day, some McDs big wigs were there and they just so happened to be looking at the efficiency of the drive-thru -- hence the visit from the manager.

So the McDs people had to bring the food out to the people that had paid and were waiting in line while Bob was "making his stand."

Long story short, after about 4 minutes of waiting in line (and a line full of angry people), the server basically threw the bag of food at Bob and he drove off.

So my question is, do any of you have gall to do something like that?

suddenly it's a term used for mental retardation?

Quit being such assholes, show your receipt when you leave a store and get out of the fucking line when they're making your food.

They tell you to move because it keeps the system they have in place working. Who am I? I'm the guy behind Bob leaning on the horn because he's ruining it for the rest of us because he's a selfish prick who society would be better off without.

BAAAAA :)

I pull forward gladly.....that means that something you ordered is being made right then and isn't quite ready. Isn't that better than getting something immediately that was made no-telling how long ago?

I don't think that it was so much a matter of him getting his food fast... just his twisted way of saying "Fuck you" to their efficiency timers.

Why should the next person in line get cold food just because I refuse to budge 10 feet? If their orders are ready, I have no problem with them getting theirs before me.

Sometimes I do, unless they are pissing me off. I always ask the window worker a few questions and take my time driving up, though. I worked at fast food, and it pisses me off when they do that to customers. It is the managers that insist on this procedure. They are rated on their drive-through times, so they attempt to cheat the system. The pulled-up vehicle usually has to wait for the expediter to bring him his food. The expediter is the fattest, laziest manager at the restaurant. They hold up all the other employees because of their incompetence, and are usually five to ten orders behind where they should be. The person in the car suffers, as he has to wait for the expediter to bumble his order, and then bring it out to the car at an incredibly slow pace.

I've been asked to pull up on several occaisions.

I pull up... it's no problem... I still don't have to get out of my car to get the food... which was the whole point of the exercise anyway. :)

If I had to pull up, and no one else behind me went through (passed me) then I would wonder.

Funny thing... there's a McDonalds we go to from time to time where if you pull up, you block the exit, so no one could get passed you and onto the road anyway. There they ask you to pull out, and into the parking lot next door... then they run it over to you.

they are trying to make their drive thru times look better on paper (there is a sensor). it looks bad when customers sit at the window for 5 minutes.

For those that don't know, a lot of FF places track times. Based on the sensors in the drive-thru, times are calculated. Ranging from time spent ordering, time spent paying, and time spent receiving for food.

Management takes these times very seriously. I've worked FF in the past, and I've had management ask me to do laps around the drive thru to get the time down.

On a good day, you can get the time down below 70 seconds per car. On a bad day, that average time can get up to 160 seconds per person. The time was never allowed to average over 90, otherwise your ass was getting chewed out.

Or somebody could have ordered a small fry with no salt and instead of holding up everyone else in the back they shoot sodium sally through the line and take care of the rest of us that hate our blood pressure.

Yeh it improved their drive through times, but it also helped out everyone else behind them.

so by pull up you mean park? Our drive-thrus have 2 windows, so you kinda have to pull up to the next window to get your food after you have paid at the first window....

Depending on the time and amount of traffic coming through, it either means you pull up past the sensor (so it looks like you received your order and drove away) or you pull up past and park.

I always pull-up because I'm just happy one part of my meal (fries) will be darn fresh.

Although Bob was right about the hold up being McD's fault (they didn't have the food ready), he should have still pulled up. I mean really - who cares?

No. Being a total prick is never the correct response to a situation as trivial as this.

Another reason to "Bump" cars is to fake your drive through timer. When we were in competition, we would bump every car that was going to wait more than 5 seconds. We would have a runner take food out to those cars waiting. Another tactic you'll see is at double windows where one takes the money. That window will hold cars as the actual timer is usually at the food window.

Ummm, explain to me exactly WHY I should have been required to work in a fast food place? I had the desire and ability to gain a higher paying, more respectable job when I was 17 so I am curious as to why you claim everyone should be "required" to work in fast food once?

Heh reminds me of when I was in my rental HHR, the window buttons were in the center console instead of on the door itself. I had to get the manual out to figure out to roll down the windows

Bob sounds like several of the great humans that I get stuck behind in the fast lane on a highway.

it depends on how much of a hurry i am in. if i'm in a rush, i don't move. if i'm not, ill pull up. however if i have to wait for a more than a few mins i expect extra fries or coupon or something for having to waste my time.

I don't mind pulling up but get my damn order correct.

We ordered chicken salads at McD's, I asked for salad dressing and they gave me BBQ sauce. Then I repeated the request for salad dressing and received croutons.

I had a freakin' knipshin fit.

I do, and it has always been delivered to me in less time that it would have taken me to cook it myself. I feel that still makes it fast food.

Plus if some part of my order just isn't ready yet, but all of the person's behind me is; WTF do I need to be an ass about it? Sitting there fuming at the window won't make the fries cook any faster, or the chicken nuggets for that matter. It just wastes everyone's time and causes needless frustration IMO.

my answer to ur 1st question--i think the correct term is "pull forward" not "pull-up" but that's just me. but yeah, it's common courtesy...plus i don't mind at all 'cause i know i'm getting somewhat *fresh* food  (as compared to what's been sitting in the heating bin).

as far as ur 2nd question, would i have the gall to do something like Bob--he sounds like an ass. that's the very reason why there are *stories* of fast food workers spitting in ppl's food...and well, for ppl like him, hmmm....
