Also, another key is taking hits. Sure, maybe you are a good fighter, but can you take hits?

I have some friends that fight for fun. I was thinking about joining them to get experience and to learn to take hits. I'll probably get beat up LOL but im learning in the process. LOL

Bare knuckle from shoulders to waist is fun... if your messing around and throwing headshot throw some gloves on to save your kuncks... 12oz are small and still hurt enough to get the idea of what its like to take a shot.

What is your opinion on kick boxing? :)

Have a few beers first ;)

Sorry, I don't drink.

My bad... my reasoning for gloves was to save your hands not your head. I haven't ever busted up one of my feet so I don't know what to tell you...

Well ive seen my friends fight each other and they sure do go for the face and head. They bust each other up pretty badly.

Quickest way to learn is to dive right in :)

Wow, more than half of people voted yes? I doubt it...

Knowing how to fight means _training_ people, years or at least a few months of it. 50% of people do _not_ have this.

knowing how to fight doesn't necessarily mean boxing, karate, kung fu, etc.

Yes it does, these are the established fighting systems and nothing you invent yourself will come close.

wtf, are we talking like getting into a fight at a bar type of fighting or fvcking competitions for karate and sh!t? obviously someone trained in karate or whatever is going to most likely be better than someone untrained.

I dunno. Sure, you get to that point on training but until you can take that punch on the nose that makes your eyes water and not slow down, you're still posing. I've sparred some guys with lots of years of karate, and if you can take a couple shots, close in and do some damage you're golden.

with no gear? then they are idiots. no reason to risk a broken hand or such. There is gear out there that will protect the head and hands. a good pair of 6oz gloves will protect the hand from getting broke and still alow you to grab someone. Also headgear will keep you from gettinga concussion or such.

Yeah, no gear. They really ARE idiots. I guess they are trying to get a "feel" of real fighting. A friend of mine said one guy got so messed up he could barely walk. I think if I were to practice fights, i'll use the gear.

Hmmm, I don't like physical altercations at all, but if a 300lb man wants to cause such trouble or worse....

1. I'd take a .45 out and turn him into Swiss cheese.
2. Have 2 thumbs to poke his eyes out (and will do it without hesitation if need be).
3. Take out a knife and make him Mr. Bobbit II (and then probably make him eat it too).

So no, I don't fight....I get more than even.

BTW, mom's worse she'd filet a guy!

I know how to fight, I just don't know how to fight and win.

When I was 12, I was tall for my age. However, my Mother taught me not to fight, so I would not fight back.
This meant that some of the smaller kids would pick on me in order to inflate their egos.

One day, a group of 12 came at me, and made me mad. I pick one of them off the ground, and tossed him at the others. The pack promptly left.

This work for a week. Then the group decided that this act was cool, and came at again and again so I would do a pick up and toss.

I have a few years each of Wing Chun and Taekwondo, plus a few months of Kendo. That having been said, I haven't been in a fight since middle school, other than sparring of course.

How many people really get in enough fights to know? I know some stuff from various martial arts, and I'm a pretty strong guy, but I know something else even better than fighting...how to avoid it. Either an awful lot of people here are too dumb to figure that out, or they are posers. This IS ATOT, so I think I know what the obvious choice is.

Well, yeah, most people are. I didn't have much choice but to fight when I was younger. Smart guy in a bad neighborhood, I don't know why people would fight unless they had to. Too many knives, guns, the friend who wacks you from behind with a beer bottle. You get in enough fights you're going to get hurt. What most "tough" guys do is figure out who they can beat up before they even pick a fight.

Why is it a 'life goal'? Why not just walk into a dojo and say "I wanna train"?

I've never understood that about people when I taught - "oh I've wanted to do [style x] for the longest time, blahblahblah" - we're here, why not do it?! . . . oh well.

FYI well if i had the time to do it, id do it!!! but WORKING and going to SCHOOL dont really give me a chance...

Let's see, someone who has practiced martial arts for years vs. two bosos in a backyard.

I was interested in Aikido for awhile. Then I realized that it was unrealistic. If it was really as potent of a defensive fighting technique as it claims to be, some Aikido master at some point in time would have demostrated it in some kind of competition. But the truth of the matter is that BJJ has been dominating MMA competitions for some time now, not Aikido.

I think Aikido makes for great demonstrations/flash, but I want something that is going to allow me to survive a street fight.

I think to that end you can't beat BJJ. If you know what you are doing you can easily take someone down and put them into a submissive hold. After that, you can inflict as much or as little damage as you want all the way to killing them if you have to.

None of those martial arts will help. Watched a Karate black belt got punch and passed out on the tarmac before, so have little faith in it as a martial art.

What works is the ability to know your surroundings and always aware of exits -- as you will always try to avoid a confrontation. Only when there's no choice (and in defense) is it necessary to fight in the first place.

Pride has killed more people, when pride comes and goes in a lifetime.

I had a long, drawn out answer to this post. But simple is better.

Do I know how to fight?

Yes, of this I have no doubt. And doubt combined with confrontation do not mix.

A more important question:

Do I know how to avoid a fight?

Yes, but this still require's effort.

I keep it simple, and I do not fear anyone.

Yes.

But my proficiency with the M4, mk16, and M11 holds more weight in case of emergency. I pity the idiot who breaks into my home.

If I need to, I can defend myself.

In the few altercations I've been in, the most important thing for me was to keep cool and not get overwhelmed or flustered while it was going on.
