I'm not an expert on fighting, but after cruising some martial arts forums for awhile, I found out that the consensus is that brazilian jiu jitsu is the best way to learn how to fight. It takes years to get a blackbelt, but if you really want to kick some ass, that is the way to go.

Traditional martial arts can be much less effective in a street fight situation. In fact, the Gracies related to the infamous Helio Gracie (pioneer of BJJ) family beat the crap out of these TMA guys (kung fu, karate, etc.) I have seen the videos, it is not a pretty sight. Basically, they take their opponent to the ground, and after that it is all over.

Also, another key is taking hits. Sure, maybe you are a good fighter, but can you take hits?

I have some friends that fight for fun. I was thinking about joining them to get experience and to learn to take hits. I'll probably get beat up LOL but im learning in the process. LOL

Knowing how to fight means _training_ people, years or at least a few months of it. 50% of people do _not_ have this.

This is a online tech forum; of course no one (incld. myself) does here - this is purely a subjective matter.

Well i do, and Hyperlite does.

Boxers have to take hits because they fight to score points not do damage, plus they wear big puffy gloves.

In a real fight it's one hit one kill.

I agree. I'm sure some people on here have training. Including myself. But then again, it's part of my job, so I don't have a choice. And I'm sure not EVERYONE has a tech job here.

Yeah, I have. Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing a real live performance.

Sorry to rain on your TMA fantasyland parade.

Bare knuckle from shoulders to waist is fun... if your messing around and throwing headshot throw some gloves on to save your kuncks... 12oz are small and still hurt enough to get the idea of what its like to take a shot.

kinokawa aikido.. it's blending your energy with the attacker's, and then using it against them.. pretty nifty stuff!

Not really... I am a pretty large guy though, 6'0" and 220 lbs, so I can kind of power through a smaller person's defenses (assuming they're just as incompetent as me when it comes to fighting, lol). I've sparred with my friends on occasion and while I'm not that good at punching and so on, I'm pretty damn good at getting in close and going for a tackle. Most of my friends are skinny too, for some reason, so in some cases I have actually lifted them completely off the ground and carried them around.

But having training such as what to watch for (tensing of the jaw, closing fists, watching eyes, looking beyond a person [instead of at them], etc).

Yes it does, these are the established fighting systems and nothing you invent yourself will come close.

Been in a few hundred fights, but never as an adult. I took a generic karate class at the YMCA for a bit, a couple of years of judo, and boxed but it really does take a lot to provoke me. I think I got the fight beat out of me, so to speak. I'm getting older, definitely slower and it's been a while since I trained with any regularity, I prefer the legal recourse option now. I think when I was 17-19 hanging out in the bars and I got a couple of guns pulled on me, that's what really finished me though I was pretty tired of the BS by then. At age 10, I really didn't think I'd make 20 (I'd already had a knife to my throat by some HS kid who told me he was going to kill me). I think martial arts helped a lot, as someone has in their sig it allows you to be civil. The only times past the early sleeze bar scene when I was under age have been pretty easy to talk myself out of. I'm still big enough that I never have to wait in line at the walk up ATMs.

My bad... my reasoning for gloves was to save your hands not your head. I haven't ever busted up one of my feet so I don't know what to tell you...
