I'm also the type (very German like) who will use his high-beams to flash the hell out of those idiots going 50 MPH in the left-hand lane with 50 cars piled behind them.

Such drivers are the people who cause accidents, forcing people to pass on the right. Those are the people cops should be stopping, ticketing, and arresting.

I do it religiously. Spending a lot of time on the road I hope that what goes around comes around. If I save somebody from a ticket maybe he'll start doing it and he'll save somebody else, that person will save somebody else and that person might save me.

Good courtesy is to give a little wave if somebody flashes you a sign. Let them know you saw it, understood it and appreciated their efforts.

I saw on TV once that, in the UK (I think), truckers give people the  sign to warn of cops, and people say thanks by giving .

I used to flash but then I caught myself one morning swearing at a speeding driver wondering where the cops were so I no longer flash. The cops here have got to be idiots though, I mean I see cars going from 15 to 50kms over the speed limit on the same road every day and yet I see a cop there once every 6 months.

Besides, I think it's illegal in Canada for cops to hide to clock cars so even if there is a speed trap, you can usually see the unmarked cop car from half a mile away. (if it's not illegal, I have never seen a cop hide here, they are always fully visible)

People do it all the time up here... especially the truckers. When you see 5-6 trucks infront of you and they're all flashing their rear lights, you know there's a speed trap up ahead.

We bikers drive with highbeams on all the time.. (it is encouraged by LE to get bikes seen) so we use hand signals to other bikers in our groups and other groups that are universal to warn of cops..

if you ever see a biker using thier left hand to tap the top of thier helmet that means there is a cop or a speedtrap coming...

and yes I do it every freaking day.. but only to other bikers ;)

Then the OPP is breaking the law. Call the OPP! Oh, wait. :p

Behind overpasses, just past crests in a hill, hell, they hide behind the giant rocks on 69 North. It's cat-and-mouse, and you just have to know how to play. ;)

About a year ago there was a huge stink on US-58 because one cop sat with this radar behind a construction van in a work zone and had multiple cops pulling people over, IIRC they got over 150 vehicles in one day.

Speeding is just one of those laws that is difficult to find the correct balance with. I know I can safely drive 75mph on our local interstates/freeways that are rated 45/55/60, so in one sense I wish the limit would be raised. But I know how many bad drivers there are (swerving in their lane, cutting others off, etc.) I want them to go slower or get pulled over if they're flying because they are a danger. I don't know the solution, but blaming the cops is the lamest approach.

I do it religiously, and appreciate when others do it for me.

Flashing your lights, high or low, to warn of a speed trap is indeed illegal in many states.

I'd love to see a cite for even a single State that specifically addresses this behavior.

Which makes sense - if they claim the point of the speed trap is to get people to slow down and not just fishing for revenue, people will slow down when they see you flashing them.

That said...I don't bother. It's not worth the hassle.

So in other words, it essentially is illegal in PA?

I got pulled over for flashing my high beams in PA, cop was a real PITA. He threatened to write me a ticket for the high beams AND my "fog lights" AND he threw in being 18 for good measure. But he let me off for a warning after yellinga t me for a few minutes.

Edit: I don't flash for people.

I only flash if a car's lights glare the oncoming traffic or if a driver forgets to turn his lights on at night. Flashing for speed traps or to signal that you give away precedence is common here but both are illegal.

It's not legal to flash your high beams like that, at least in NH.

I think I missed the part about high beams. I don't think it's illegal to turn your headlights on and off to warn someone. I've done it before. I certainly could be wrong and, if so, I'm sure I'll find out here. :)

That is what I have done in the past, and have never heard of it being illegal to do so.

Traps are truly a b**ch... I always feel sorry for those that get caught in them.

They are getting ready to up the speed limits to 80mph here in Texas anyhow! :D

Yes, always.

Will also flash brake lights when radar is going off and I know a cop is coming or hiding.

Swerving in a lane, cutting others off is ILLEGAL. You don't need stupidly low speed limits to pull over bad drivers when they are breaking law in ways other than speeding.

Journer thats insane... never never run from a cop!!! Especially on a motorcycle...

I like you and don't want to hear about you being in a serious motorcycle accident, or worse prison for felony evading...
