It's legal to flash in PA. Of course you can also be stopped for using your high beams inappropriately (e.g. you are too close to the car in front of you or there is oncoming traffic), but you can't specifically be stopped for blowing their "cover."

Which makes sense - if they claim the point of the speed trap is to get people to slow down and not just fishing for revenue, people will slow down when they see you flashing them.

That said...I don't bother. It's not worth the hassle.

So in other words, it essentially is illegal in PA?

I got pulled over for flashing my high beams in PA, cop was a real PITA. He threatened to write me a ticket for the high beams AND my "fog lights" AND he threw in being 18 for good measure. But he let me off for a warning after yellinga t me for a few minutes.

Edit: I don't flash for people.

Its not illegal to warn people of upcoming police in PA, they do it over CB, etc. What is illegal is high-beaming oncoming traffic. Generally the accepted manner is to flash off and on your headlights.

I flash my lights at oncoming traffic all the time (when they are headed towards a speed trap). I would hope that people would do the same for me, speed limits need to be raised its boring only going 90.

Such drivers are the people who cause accidents, forcing people to pass on the right. Those are the people cops should be stopping, ticketing, and arresting.

If 50MPH is the speed limit, there is no problem. Nobody "forces" anyone to pass on the right. Stop being so impatient, obey the law and enjoy your ride.

funny thing........just left for lunch and as I was driving home on the roads I take every day...I pass a truck and it flashes its headlights at me. I immediately slow down and as you would expect 1/4 mile ahead is a speed trap. The guy saved my ass. So as a result I flashed the next 20 cars coming at me to warn them.

left lane is for passing though not for cruising along at whichever speed you see fit.

You're not allowed to exceed the speed limit, even to pass. If 50 mph is the limit, and the person in front is doing 50 mph then there is no problem.

Whatever. I have no idea what the laws are where you live but where I live you can be ticketed for failure to move right when safe to do so.

§ 46.2-842.1. Drivers to give way to certain overtaking vehicles on divided highways.

It shall be unlawful to fail to give way to overtaking traffic when driving a motor vehicle to the left and abreast of another motor vehicle on a divided highway. On audible or light signal, the driver of the overtaken vehicle shall move to the right to allow the overtaking vehicle to pass as soon as the overtaken vehicle can safely do so. A violation of this section shall not be construed as negligence per se in any civil action.

(1989, c. 708, § 46.1-211.1.)

So legally, if the jerkoff behind you is tailgating the heck outta you but does not turn on his light signal nor honk his horn, you're in the clear. And of course you cannot be assumed to see the light signal of any vehicles behind that one, and maybe not the audible depending on the speeds being traveled.

How it stands up in court cases might be another thing since that law is 17 years old and the state is unknown.

It's illegal here in FL. That said, I do it anyway. I've been saved at least once by someone doing it for me so I return the favor.

if you ever see a biker using thier left hand to tap the top of thier helmet that means there is a cop or a speedtrap coming...

and yes I do it every freaking day.. but only to other bikers ;)

hmmm...all us bikers around here just speed up...no point in taking your hand of the bars if your already doing 50 over...

nice going squid...
elevate that speeding ticket to FELONY evading...

smart.. guys like you end up on cops...

its not a felony if you dont get caught...i never run unless its on the interstate... >.> in AL it is a felony to do over 1xx (110, 115 i think...something) anyways...so i figure i might as well try and get away with it...only done it twice :p

Journer thats insane... never never run from a cop!!! Especially on a motorcycle...

I like you and don't want to hear about you being in a serious motorcycle accident, or worse prison for felony evading...

1) already been in a serrious motorcycle accident (read my shitting pants thread)
2) even IF you get caught (which is somewhat likely under most circumstances..) it is doubtfull you would stay in prison...at least in AL...i had a buddy run, and get away...he got pulled over while pimping around town by the cop who was after him when he ran...he got his bike impounded and some fines...thats about it

Oh that makes it ok...
so lesson #1 get new friends that can do somewhere around the speed limit..
#2 decide you want to continue this life without being splattered across a car or semi or the road itself...
#3 learn some responisibility for your actions..

Fleeing/Evading is indeed now a felony in most states and is being changed in alot more every year..

Bikers like you give the rest of us bikers a serious bad name..

I am a sportbiker and I have my CMRA/CCS race license and do it legally..

The Streets are no place for this kinda bonzai runs.. and advertising that you are such a moron you would run from police at the drop of a hat proves to me that yes they do give licenses to any moron with a heartbeat.

Do the entire sportbike a community a favor and become a statistic..

So what if your not passing get out of the left lane I dont give a flip if your going 10 under or 10 over. The left lane is for PASSING not cruising. If your not passing your cruising regardless of whetehr you are going above below or the exact posted speed limit. Its pretty clear cut man.

Something similar happened to me. I ended up getting pulled over by a cop waiting on my side of the road a few hundred feet past where the first cop was. He did just let me off with a warning though. But the point was made. I'll flash my lights occasionally when I see a speed trap depending on my mood, but most of the time I don't bother anymore. :p

EDIT: People around here though will also flash their lights to warn of deer/animals (and/or other similar hazards) in the road.
