according to a lovely black girl at work, the princess doesn't date black guys because they are lazy, dumb, and only hold her back. her words, not mine.

I wanna make a comment regarding the black girl based on personal experience at school and work, and from chats with relatives relating their experience on the subject matter, but it would come out totally racist. So I'm just gonna keep that comment to myself.

Nobody in the public eye will ever do anything right for everybody. It will always be seen a different ways.

Just the fact that people are still complaining over skin color (even when it's wanting something to be more "equal"), to me, shows we still are a long way from seeing beyond race.

Disney will be accused of racism no matter what they chose for this first film featuring a black princess.

exactly. besides, people would find something racist even if there wasn't anything to do with race.

ill leave it at that

No, there are plenty of black racists.

I've met more minority racists than White ones. Actually, I have never met an (openly) racist White person ever...

Apparently you don't get out much...Unless your standard for openly is willing to display it to anyone

No, there are plenty of black racists.

The only racist people left in this country that aren't so backwoods they haven't seen a television set OR a minority in 30 years are the minorities themselves who fling the race card every chance they get.

Eh, you know I hate to disagree with you nik but there are still some regular everyday nutcases out there. Check out the Couer d'Alene Idaho white power annual gathering. Young folks in regular society with an ass-backwards understanding of the world. Don't underestimate the stupidity of people.

On the flip side, I would say that society in general recognizes these folks for the bigots they are and they are disadvantaging themselves more than minorities when they display their prejudices.

I'm well aware. My sister lives in Spokane.

However. Since Couer d'Alene and Spokane are full of backwoods redneck hillbilly whities, my statement still applies 😉

Shouldn't she?

Oh no you did-int!

Seriously though, I would laugh my arse off if they made her talk like a fat, angry, Southern black woman.

You know Brandy, the girl that played Moesha?

...wasn't she a princess in a film? And what's the difference between this film and that one?

?Not only is she the first black princess, she?s the first American princess. We?ve never had an American princess,? said Rose."

You Disney fans... so they've actually never even had an American princess?

Disney uses the term "princess" rather loosely. Belle (Beauty & the Beast), Mulan, and Cinderella have all been marketed as Disney Princesses (TM), yet none of them have royal blood. I think Ariel (Little Mermaid), Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), and Jasmine (Aladdin) are the only "real" princesses.

There was Pocahontas, but I don't recall her actually being marketed as a Disney Princess. I think she's the only American.

Boo to all the racists who actually give a fvck about what race the prince is. Whatever happened to "I have a dream..."

With modern technology, viewers should be able to select their racial preferences on the DVD start up menu and have all the characters appear in the race of the viewers' choice, no different than re-masking video game characters. If the studios could do this, I might consider watching The Wiz.

I like those saying 'who is going to buy black princess stuff'.

Dora the Explorer is pretty popular and definitely not a white character.

But she is not black. Hispanic, American Indian, Mermaid - Most people do not have a problem. There is a still a lot of people in the country (NOT including me, BTW. I am just pointing out the facts as I see them) who will have a problem with buying a black doll, etc.

Many Americans HATE "I have a dream..." they don't want black people to have dreams. Between the straight up rednecks, and the closest bigots who try and come off as having a "one love" mentality towards other races. I see this movie not doing even close to typical Disney numbers. The 2 groups of people I brought up make up a sizable chunk of people in good Ole' America.

Yet Will sSmith and Denzel Washington are arguably THE two most succesful movie stars in the last few years.

I'm sorry but your post just fails.

Technically Simba was African...

Not to mention jasmine was Arab and she married an Arab... that's pretty progressive

There is a very different demographic of people who go to Will Smith and Denzel Washington movies versus people who go to Disney Princess movies/buy Disney Princess merchandise.

I do believe that younger generations are certainly less race-aware than the generation before.

Again, I hope that I am wrong and this movie does gangbusters at the theatre and in the stores.

2 out of how many? There are always exceptions, but the 2 you mentioned definitely are not the rule, if you want to use exceptions for the normal. Then Obama as our president means black people aren't discriminated against when it comes to getting jobs. Because, I mean he has a job, and a good one at that. So they all must right? And if you look beyond the movies what do you see? There's no Will Smith Handcock action figure you can buy. Where any other action hero movie would have plenty of toy tie ins. Hell they even released Punisher action figures, and that was possibly the most kid unfriendly action hero movie I've ever seen.
