OK. It's not bad enough that we persicuted smokers must go outside to smoke. Now our company states that we must be 50 feet away from any door into the building to smoke because some whiney bastage said they can't walk in the BACK door in a smoke free environment. WE'RE OUTSIDE!!! HOLD YOUR BREATH!!! I'm being discriminated against. Could there be a lawsuit in this?

Why?

I don`t know, I heard that smoking isn`t good for you. But, that's just what I heard.

McDonalds isn't good for you either but I don't see anyone forced to stand in the rain to eat it because the smell offends a vegan.

<< I don`t go to McDonalds. >>

What does that have to do with anything? Do you think because someone does something unhealthy that they should not be allowed to do it where they want? Especially if it is legal.

well, 8ball i guess reasoning to your common sense wont work, how about this one. your place of employment owens the building, owns the lot, and sets the rules. you dont like it find another job.

Walk around. Hold your breath. Sould there be special lanes for diesel trucks? How about oil burning cars...should they park 500000000000 feet from the building?

Going to McDonalds and eating bad food isn't going to affect the person standing next to you.
Secondhand smoke is bad for you and there have been plenty of studies to prove that. Making you stand 50ft away may be a little extreme, but making you smoke outside seems perfectly fine to me.

naa but they do have more strict regulations to fall under. so they might not need to park very far, but they do have guidelines that they MUST follow.

I don't mind that. I don't smoke in my house. I also don't stand directly in front of the door to my office either. There is about 20 feet on either side under an overhang. Now we have been moved out from under the overhang, directly in the walking path. So now people can't stroll around the pond with out walking through smoke...we will soon be forced to walk across the street.

You referred to McDonalds. And I said that I don`t go there. Which part don`t you understand?

<< Do you think because someone does something unhealthy that they should not be allowed to do it

Of course, me eating "McDonalds" in your example, doesn`t effect anyones health but mine. However, if I am smoking, second hand smoke comes into play, which effects everyones health that is in that vacinity.

<< Especially if it is legal. >>

Legal? Well, it's illegal for people under 19 to smoke here in Canada (not sure about the States, but I am sure it is similar). It doesn`t matter what age you are, in order to eat McDonalds. Additionally, it is not illegal to eat McDonalds in various areas, yet smoking cigs is illegal in certain areas, as you have encountered at work.

Well, either you are discriminating against them, endangering their health (so that you can speen up your own heart and feel better), or they discriminate against you in order to protect their own health.

Hrmm. Let me think a while on which sounds more just.

Two seconds of smelling second hand smoke will not harm anyone. It's OUTSIDE!!! What if the wind blows the wrong direction and the smoke blows in that direction now? It's OUTSIDE!!!

8ball,

I don`t think that they should send you "across the street", but I do think you should be out of the way of people that don`t smoke. Asking them to hold there breath for a moment while they enter the building is obsured.

The winds of change.... What you do in your home, in private is one thing. In a public setting, the majority rules. Today's society says no to smoking. You'll have to deal with. Anyway, don't feel to bad, and don't get too mad at those who oppose it. Most are paying into Medicare, which you may have to depend on in the future. I most recently watched my dad die a horrific and lengthy death of cancer due to smoking. I wouldn't wish that on anybody.
