WAPO, Yahoo News and the NY Times authors themselves frame it as exactly that. The Atlantic has a rather long article on the subject that, if anything, characterized the accusations as inconclusive.

You just said that there is no "litany of accounts" yet cite the Atlantic in your defense as detailing this "litany of accounts" ....but only that they are inconclusive?
So is there a "litany of accounts," or not?
First: why is it fine to not bother investigating such accounts in order to better determine their accuracy?
Second: what does that have to do with confirmation hearings or a possible impeachment? None of that is really necessary. It is entirely political, and it is entirely based on character. Preponderance of evidence, apparently established by the Atlantic article that you mention, is a very good place to start.
