This is exactly what I mean. Don't know why @gothuevos doesn't seem to get it. Parents will sue left and right until all references of race are removed from classrooms and books.

If I was a college professor and had other job options, I would do an entire week on the Tulsa Race Massacre with all its gory details and dare the school to fire me. I would record the lesson and post to social media.

Dude, plenty of heinous stuff coming out of Florida. But that story you linked, isn't it.

Why did Florida's own department of education REFUSE the revised textbook and basically claimed that the history of segregation NEEDS to include race. This is just objective fact found in your own story.

If and when they actually approve a history book that leaves out huge swaths of actual racial history, this is wasted energy right now. And I say this as someone who generally likes and appreciates most of your takes.

More curriculum chaos caused by Ron. I'll bet Ron is eating this stuff up trying to own the libs. I wonder who is Ron's Stephen Miller.

This "bounty system" is dumb but why is an English professor trying to teach about social justice at a private Christian school in Florida of all places? And in this political climate?

FL is not going to allow this in their schools anymore. Whether we like it or not, it's 100% clear what will happen to a teacher like this. So why expose yourself?

I can just about guarantee this is going to backfire. In my experience any sort of mandatory lecture in political doctrine will turn off the vast majority of students and many will seek out the opposite views voluntarily.

Agreed.

Children passing through their defiant stage in life, especially where having to put up with their brains being forcibly crammed with "useless information" (like history) in order to be rewarded with a passing grade is something I personally experienced but yielded under penalty of not ever getting my driver's license and the tire smok'in chick magnet hot rod that came with it.

Maturity will of course prove the error of our ways, it's just that a lot of adults prefer to be told what to think, to be treated like obedient children, a perfect condition for them to be exploited by conservative religious charlatans and conservative partisan hacks of whom have become masters at their trade.

Kind of like the vaccine mandates, right?

There is a false equivalence in your statement.

FL is trying to rewrite history, and use the government to squash ideas they don't agree with, and even more dangerously - facts that don't fit into their culture war.

Vaccine's have a long history and up until recently were widely accepted until the culture war spread to include them.

You still haven't answered the question why the edits were done in the first place. That answer is the issue.

By the time the whitewashed books are approved and reissued it will be too late.

What about the overall theme "we don't want to upset little white kids" Which is the basis for all this Fahrenheit 911 stuff. Don't children of color count or is it all white centric?

As part of Social Studies what's wrong with it? Wouldn't the phrase "social justice" directly apply to the Civil Rights movement?

Are we just supposed to acquiesce to fascism?

The MLK book Why We Can't Wait has the quote...
Catholic priests and rabbis of Jewish congregations took place on the front lines as the Old and New Testament ethic of social justice flamed with the fire that once before had transformed the world.

Are you now condoning the prohibition of books by MLK because he advocated for social justice?

The edits were done because an Alabama based publisher THOUGHT that's what the FL law required. And FL itself said no. Which contradicts your concern that whitewashed books would get through. When/if that happens, sure, sound the alarm. But you continue to gloss over the (major) detail about FL denying this publisher. If this was some nefarious theme to let through whitewashed books, surely this book should have been published, no?

I predict that FL will be the first state to return to burning witches at the stake.... :p
IDK, I wouldn't put it past any number of deep south or bible belt states...or even Utah for that matter. Plenty of anti-devilry sentiment across the country. Plenty of false Christians (or Mormons), after all.

If the law were clear it wouldn’t have happened. It is vague intentionally to allow crazy parents to sue.

It’s like they enact voter ID laws. The intent is to disenfranchise but hiding behind the ID gives them deniability. They’ve already games out the likely results and it back doors their way to the result they want

Remember even they can’t be too overt racist. I suggest you look up the invention of the dog whistle

It's funny where your concerns lie. Inconsistent.

I guess maybe he figured since he'd been doing it for a decade with no complaints, it wouldn't suddenly be an issue. Seems he underestimated the extent of the rage factory's impact.
Students in Joeckel's class read and analyze passages about the topic, discuss them and write short essays of their own. But he said he does not express his own opinions on the issues examined and does not require students to take a certain stance on them.

WOW!
Florida bill would ban girls from talking about their periods in school, GOP lawmaker says (msn.com)

Imagine Republicans in Florida want to stick the noses into high school girls vaginas.

Wait, DeSantis is Gov so it makes sense.
Heck, I remember when there was a girls only meeting out side of the 6 th grade class I was in which was very disconcerting for me. Not having any sisters I had no clue, until informed by my classmate that the subject was probably about getting your period. Oh.....

Have you ever read any literature? I would think the answer to this should be self evident.

My Dutch-Reformed Calvinist church school in W. Michigan would be out of compliance according to DeSantis, since they took the girls out of the classroom for the special movie in the 5th grade.

Men controlling women. That is DeSantis. That is the modern Republican party.

(edit DeSantis, not Santos)

We should be clear that DeSantis is doing this for attention. He doesn’t actually care behind that.
