Wow, this is absolutely insane. Our former Republican governor Bob Ehrlich brought us from a deficit to a surplus, now the Dems get a stranglehold on the state and they just can't control themselves.

Democrats don't think we are paying enough for gas

ANNAPOLIS -- Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. wants to increase Maryland's sales tax on gasoline by 12 cents a gallon, part of a revenue plan that also includes bringing 15,500 slot machines to the state and cutting government positions.
"There's going to be cuts, there's going to be slots, there's going to be tax increases," Mr. Miller said yesterday. "And it's going to be tough for some people, but they're going to have to suck it up and move forward for the good of the state."

And to top it off, its actually a %4 excise tax, so as gas prices go up, the Democrats get more money. Funny thing is, this hurts the poor more than anyone else, so much for Democrats helping the poor.

Maryland Democrats showing their true colors

The first bill implement a 4% excise tax on wholesale gasoline prices , with the money going towards highway projects

Maybe some Democrats want higher gas prices but not ALL Democrats.

I did not say ALL Democrats.

I agree, sales taxes are a bad way to fund a government. High marginal income tax rates are the way to go.

Nowhere in my post do I say to abolish sales taxes.

Next!

Why? Because I said Democrats instead giving the exact figure of how many Democrats are in favor of this? Why haven't I seen you in any of the threads about Republicans complaining that people are saying that ALL Republicans are doing something?

The big thing being overlooked here is that I think most people's complaint about gas prices is based on the incredible profits the oil companies make. They do not compete, and yet, are somehow never colluding with each other.

A gas tax is theoretically returned to the people in the form of infrastructure and services; value for your money. Obscene profits for the oil companies return nothing to the average consumer.

The OP should be far more concerned with whether or not the proposal would return sufficient benefit to be of value to the state's citizens. Railing that a Democrat proposed it is intellectually silly if you seek to debate its merits.

Ok, lets take a look at who gets what. If or when this gets through the Maryland senate, I believe that on a $2.50 gallon of gas the Maryland government will get $.35. From what I have heard, Exxon has about a 9 percent profit margin right now, so on that same $2.50 Exxon will make about $.22. Thats not even factoring in the multitudes of taxes that the Federal government gets from Exxon.

And if "Railing that a Democrat proposed it is intellectually silly if you seek to debate its merits." then I guess we need to keep party affiliation out of all or our debates. Have you been saying this in the multitudes of threads about Republicans? When discussing the Iraq war, are you telling people to that they are being "intellectually silly" when they constantly bring up the Bush aministration and blame everything on the Republican party?

Why is it that so many of you attack me for mentioning that its the Democrats in Maryland that are trying to raise the gas tax, yet I have not seen you guys in the Republican bashing threads making the same kinds of claims?

I find it funny that its open season to bash Republicans because of high gas prices, but when confronted with an instance where Democrats want to raise the price of gas, all you are doing is defending them.

As usual JD50 you miss the point - you oversimplify the issue to 'higher gas prices'.

There's a difference between higher gas prices caused by government policy skyrocketing the profits of the oil companies, and higher gas prices for a tax for that has a benefit.

The republicans do the former, democrats are more likely to do the latter.

Show us republicans adding a gas tax for a good reason, and we'll compliment them - but you can't because they don't. They only reward donor big business.

Do you support a regressive gas tax that hurts the poor much more than it hurts the middle and upper class?

I showed you Democrats adding a gas tax for a bad reason but you won't condemn them. There is nothing stopping them from cutting spending instead of raising taxes.

1. read the topic summary, "Maryland Democrat wants to raise our gas tax"

2. This kind of tactic is used all day long by the left on this board to conservatives and Republicans is that ok with you?

3. Ted Haggard was used to discredit the whole Christian religion, were you defending Christians in that thread?

4. What exactly is your criteria for labeling Democrats and Republicans? Do you need to have one from each state that agrees with something?

Edit - I guess its acceptable for you to call conservatives retards and say that they need their own version of reality in this thread but its not ok for me to say that Democrats are going for higher gas prices in the State of Maryland when that is exactly what they are trying to do.

Maybe not abolish, but you did say this:

I agree with that statement of yours, and I don't think the Democrats should be funding government off regressive sales taxes collected from the poor, which is why gasoline sales tax is inappropriate way to increase funding.

I just find that interesting that conservatives who keep telling us we should dump the income tax and replace it with a sales tax oppose any actual moves to do so.
As a liberal, I am against increasing taxes on gasoline because they are regressive. But what is the conservative opposition to actual increases in fuel taxes to fund programs that may otherwise requre other, more progressive tax increases.

I'm not for a national sales tax, I'd prefer to see a flat tax. My opposition is that instead of constantly increasing taxes, find something to cut. We cannot just increase taxes eveytime we need to fund another project, eventually you will not be able to tax anymore.

Yes, it is BS, the reason I did it here was to see the reactions of the left, which were exactly what I thought they would be. Of course I could have made a more balanced thread title, but why? When I first started posting on this board I was pretty neutral, but I've gotten a little sick and tired of the posts by the left on here anytime there is a minor misstep by a Republican or conservative saying how horrible all Republicans and conservatives are.

So, if you can't handle this "tactic" when it is used against your side, maybe you need to find another message board, because that is the prevailing tactic that is used here. I see many people here that can dish it out but can't take it.

Minor missteps? Like Iraq war is a minor misstep? We are talking about blunders here, face reality for a change.

No, like someone saying that they saw a paper shredding company at Cheneys house, remember that one?

Have you been looking at the same threads that I have? Apparently the only threads that you have read are the ones about the Iraq war, you should look around more, there are threads about other things.

One way to look at gas taxes from the moral high ground is to think of them as usage taxes. The more you drive (and the more wear and tear you cause to roads, bridges, etc.), the more you pay. The rich will likely be taxed more in the long run because their large, inefficient, luxury vehicles will use more fuel per use.
