the real issue seems to be the apparent requirement to have a new video card to be able to use 10.1 - if i am reading things correctly. existing video cards will not work with dx 10.1. so my 8600GT, for instance, will not be workable with 10.1

Of course it will - it will just render in software what a 10.1 could would've done in hardware, or it will only follow 10.0 codepaths - exactly what has always happened with DirectX.

There's nothing new here. Just as with 9.0c and SM3.0, this is nothing new.

OK, I got back to work on the slipstreaming of the sata drivers with windows XP using nlite. Got XP loaded. Now we need the ethernet, and audio drivers for this board. Where do we get those?
Thanks

Acer.com? Or else just find the manufacturer's website and get drivers straight from them...

Hi, I love this machine for 3D renering. Having problems loading 4 gigs of ram. Acer support could not figure it out. 3 gig is ok, but when I put in the 4th stick the motherboard bleeps continuously and the memory won't post. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Forget about the fourth stick. There are a number of posts indicating that any 32 bit version of Windows can only use around 3 GB, and the fourth is wasted. I'd imagine that would mean, if you're running dual channel, you'd want to try a 1 GB stick and a 512 MB stick in each channel.

Agreed - I wouldn't get too worked up over it - it would give you about .3GB (300M) more RAM. Not enough to care too much about, typically.

However, that is an issue, and it's not a 64-bit / 32-bit issue, it's a hardware issue. Can you swap the RAM around, and any combination of 3 works, but the fourth always fails? Can you try to replace all four sticks with another brand of RAM? What voltage does the RAM require?

We got the ethernet working. Still can't get anything going with the audio. The bios says it's a Azalia audio. Intel has no Azalia under any 965 express board that I can find on their web page. they have a sigmatel audio.

I will be installing Windows XP 64 because direct-X is still a problem in Vista and OpenGL is too slow. Every bit of ram helps because paging to a drive while rendering is more than 30 times slower. All sticks work separately. I added Crucial DDR2 800 sticks to the existing DDR2 533's. Is the power supply the problem? The memory won't post at 4 gigs. It starts beeping before the OS loads.

Any suggestions? I'd like to go to 8 gigs. Do I have to buy a new motherboard?

Thank you

Again, did you try replacing all four sticks with another brand of RAM?
Again, what are the required voltages of the RAM?

The board should support 8GB, IIRC. You'd obviously need a 64-bit OS, but you aren't even getting that far yet - I'd try other types of RAM, focusing on those requiring only 1.8V.

No, but I may overclock a different motherboard later. My ram is Crucial DDR2 800 CT12864AA80E 1.8v. Could just 2 sticks of ram require a larger power supply?

:) Check out the thread. I'm running 4 1GB sticks, 4 500GB SATA drives, 1 8800GTS/320 nVidia GPU, the standard Q6600 CPU, and a Hauppauge dual-tuner PVR. With room to spare. Using the stock 300W PSU.

Don't believe the hype about the needing a 500W PSU. 300W is plenty for most desktops.

Ok when you had Vista Running what audio device did it say was installed?. I loaded the XP Realtek codec and had no issues.

2. Unkown Device, I think this is a INTEL Active management system (this was according to VISTA). again doesn't seem to do anything. It is interesting this is in VISTA, I wonder if acer are using this??? location on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System

BTW INTEL-AMT could be the PCI SCC, I just don't use VISTA that often to verify. Maybe your could check you device manager in Vista?

Easiest to jump to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx, plug in the hwid of the object in question, and typically you can find drivers there.

In this case, though, I'm pretty sure it's missing an Intel driver; I added a few Intel drivers from Acer's WWW page and (a month ago, when I installed Vista) the unknown device went away.

Alive again, but not really hot as you can build a equal if not better system for the same money.

Good deal though for retail machine, if you dont feel like building yourself.
