Well, we decided to do a dual boot on the Acer with XP home. I have the nlite all loaded on the Acer in Vista. Got the XP disc loaded into the nlite program. Got the Intel G965 Sata drivers downloaded for XP. Of course , these drivers are in the downloaded form of a .exe. Nlite is asking for .inf files to integrate drivers into XP. How do we get the .exe to make a .inf file? We can't open the .exe and tell it to install in a folder. This is not an area I have much experience in. Thanks

EDIT: I think I found it. You gotta use WinRAR to extract the drivers into a folder..

Explode the EXE (get winrar to make it easier) and that will expose the inf files as required.

I dunno what gives with this winrar deal. I download the sata drivers in the form of a .exe from Intel, create a new winrar archive, tell it to extract the files and all it does is create the same downloaded .enu file again and again. I get no folders, just a .exe

You don't want to make a new archive, you want to explode (expand) the existing .exe file, which is typically an archive file in the format that winrar can expand.

If you don't see that option when you right-click the file, Winrar can't expand it, so simply run the EXE, go to Windows temp directory, find the files there, and then put them into the nlite directory. But I'm all but certain Winrar can expand the files to a new subdirectory, which makes working with the files much easier.

If that doesn't work, post the exact URL to the files you downloaded and I'll DL it and tell you what to do.

OK, that's what confused me. I get no option with a right click on the .enu file to expand it. Only options to create add to a archive or compress and email. Looks like I'll have to do this at home on my XP PC, since the drivers we need are for XP

I have no idea what you mean by your last comment, but can you give me the exact link, and I'll tell you what you must do?

What I'm saying is that I'm on his Acer with Vista machine, and I don't want to run the Intel sata drivers meant for XP on a vista machine in order to get the file folders I need for XP.

OK thanks. It's not clear to me, but I don't have the education. I'll read up on it tomorrow

7.2 Use one of the following command examples to extract the
driver files from the different package types:

c:\iata_cd.exe -a -a -pc:\<path>
c:\iata_enu.exe -a -a -pc:\<path>
c:\setup.exe -a -pc:\<path>

When the command is run, the installation process begins;
simply click through the dialogs as prompted. This will not
install the driver, it will only extract the driver files to
<path>. After the extraction is completed, the driver
files can be found in <path>\Driver.

yeah, I read that. I don't know what they mean by -a -a -pc. I know the path is where I tell it to extract the files. I very rarely do any command line things. It's just holes in my knowledge. It would probably take me an hour to figure out if I need a back slash or a forward one. Don't worry about it, I'll do more reading.

c:\iata75_enu.exe -a -a -pc:\test and then go to c:\test for the output files.

(This assumes iata75_enu is in the root of C:.)

I think I got it. I moved the iata75_enu to the root of C, do the command line thing, and it dumps the files I need to the folder specified, Test. Inside Test, I find the folder named Driver, and that's it. Cool. Thanks

I bought a second one of these systems and on a 22 inch Acer display it will flicker a few seconds after moving the mouse with a screen saver up or turning the monitor back on.

My other identical system, except for the fact that I slapped in an 8800 GTS does not do this, and it uses the identical 22 inch acer display.

Also, for all who care, my system has been running perfectly with an 8800 GTS. The PSU is still sufficient.

I have to disagree on the monetary compensation part at least. I dont think Gates is all that worried about another billion dollars on top of the many he has already. Obviously most newer DVD players and LCD's are set up to be HDCP compatible. To me its not that big of a deal as far as requiring video cards to be HDCP compatible. Its the new wave, we might as well get used to it.

I also think that the copyright protected issue of some of these dvd's is related to the particular dvd drive in this Acer PC. Otherwise as DCLive and some others have said, we'd have people all over the net complaining that regular DVD's do not play.

The link above is strictly referring to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray content requiring HDCP.
On another note my Video card has a slightly blurry picture for about 5 minutes then it goes back to normal. Its almost as if it has to warm up. I'll be replacing it with something a lot better as soon as the new wave of Video cards arrive that are fully Vista x64, Direct X10, and HDCP compatible. For now its not that big of a deal and I dont really feel like temporarily replacing it when I know something better will be out around christmas.

Acer should have provided this or at least said something about their DVD drive having some strange copyright protection that no other computer in my household has. Search for SlySoft on that torrent site. You can get the whole suite with AnyDVD HD and DVD Clone etc...I dont use it for anything but playing DVDs that wouldn't play before but it does a great job of that.

Let's not endorse piracy on Anandtech, eh? :(

Erm, no. DX10 is here, and it's in Vista. Vista is a shipping product, so clearly DX10 exists.

only dx 10.1 which will not be compatible with current 8 series nvidia cards. 10.1 will require completely new video hardware, and will be released with SP1 next year. google dx 10.1 or check this out: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12...0069&messageID=2561054

Here's the source article, rather than some yahoo's post: http://www.extremetech.com/art.../0,1697,2168429,00.asp

And a much better way to put that is like so: Microsoft is releasing an update to DirectX 10 called DirectX 10.1 with newer features, much like they did going from DirectX 9.0 to 9.0a, 9.0b, and 9.0c. Particularly with 9.0c, Shader Model 3.0 came out, which required new graphics cards to do those features in hardware.

Nothing new here people...
