crysis under dx9 1280x1024 under the tweaked 'very high' mode med. shadows, fps ~35s

I bought this computer with the deal way back when it was still active with CompUSA. I'm now upgrading my video card, and i was wondering which one i should order off of newegg since Best Buy and Circuit City both don't seem to have any good deals. Does PCI Express 2.0 work with this motherboard?

The only reason why I'm extremely reluctant to purchase anything off of newegg is due to that fact that many of the cards I am looking at do not hold a refund policy - only a replaced part if it works incorrectly. I want to make sure I'm buying a card that fits into the computer and functions properly before being $300 out (which is the maximum I'll be willing to spend).

I don't have the money to waste, so I was wondering which 8800 GT or GTS would work with this computer. I was wondering, since many of you replaced the video card with some form of an 8800, which exact model I should purchase. Thank you.

IC. This: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814121224 is cheaper and of the newer (and less power-hungry) GT design. If you're OK with spending more, that might be wise. Also fully returnable.

Well that one is much cheaper than the one that is supposed to arrive tomorrow. By about $50 actually. The one I ordered is doubled from the 320 to 640 range in megs. The card you've shown appears to be pretty similar in specs. As I don't know a whole lot about video cards, I'm just guessing that 640 megs over 512 would make a significant difference, seeing that there is over a 100 meg increase in the memory. Plus, EVGA seems to have a good rep for their cards on newegg. What do you think of mine?

I'm hoping for a HUGE leap in performance from my 1650 SE, which seems to be $60-$70 new on newegg heh.

Before buying hardware it's wise to read Tomshardware.com and other similar reviews.

8800GT is faster than the older GTS lineup.

Thanks for all of the info guys. I can play Crysis on high at 1280x768, whereas with my 1650 I was getting 10 fps with everything on low, including resolution. Quite a jump. BTW, what a tight fit in there!

BTW, I thought I read somewhere that the motherboard in this ACER computer cannot support anymore than 700megs on a video card.. is this correct? I am looking to buy a Radeon card that has 1 gig of memory.

I would be highly skeptical of any claims about this machine that were not also common on the rest of the 965-chipset motherboards. Since there is no known problem with 965 boards in general, I'd really question if or why this board would be any different.

I must have been mistaken. dclive, I know you had purchased this computer back when the deal was out.. not sure if you are still using the same computer. I was wondering if you or anyone else who may know can answer this question:

I have been using a 8800 GTS 640 for about a year now. It barely fit in, but it did, and there have been no problems with the original power supply.

Would it be possible to upgrade to a Radeon 4870 1 gig (link to card below) and keep the same power supply? Or should I get a new one?

This seems to be a good deal, I believe its even cheaper after a mail in rebate.

What is the difference in the wattage between the two?

You can then plug a kill-a-watt gizmo into your machine and see what you're using.

You should be fine though.
