Man O Man. I spent half the afternoon over there trying the quad core machine and trying some Sam Adams beer too. Like them both a lot.

Anyone find any fan adjustments in the bios? What I saw was not user adjustable.

Tried the recovery system out. It only recovers C drive. ( tech support told me it recovers all partitions, not true) We also burned a DVD for recovery, it too only reinstalls the C drive. That's good, since any files on the E drive won't be touched. Looks like Acronis backup software does not like working with the PC probably because of the Acer recovery zone. It locks up upon boot up. An Acronis burned boot CD also locks up. Probably will have to get rid of the Acer installed recovery zone in order for Acronis True Image to work. Acronis Disc Director might work to fix the problem

I'll be building one of these quad cores real soon for myself.

uninstalling zone alarm is a daunting task requiring some prayer. i have not seen anyone on the internet reporting slowdowns caused by za, but i'm just not sure. it may be slowing things down.

i once had an experience where uninstalling za free left some ugly thing in my registry. took time to find out how to get it out.

If it's that bad (was it? Lots of things get left in the registry - typically that isn't an issue) ...wouldn't that lead you to never installing ZA again, then? :) Honestly.... that's kinda silly, don't you think? And you're behind a router, too, so it's not as if your PC is directly on the public internet....

i made some adjustments in program controls in zone alarm, and turned off the web shield in avast (which used to actively conflict with zone alarm) and now the internet flies as well as XP. i'm a happy camper. thanks so much for your assistance on that.

just ordered an xfx 8600gt at a great price, and i'm off to the races.

As we've discussed, since you're behind a router I'd suggest removing all but the built-in Windows Defender and a simple antivirus-only program. Most of the rest, for the vast majority of people, is absolutely unnecessary and only brings more complications, like what you've experienced.

Oh, shoot!:Q
I only picked up the computer (still haven't tested it yet) but since the rebate was instant and not mailed-in, I'm assuming there is no printer combo (might be different if it was ordered online). Heck, the saleman did not mention any combo and may have been reluctant to do so. On the website, the printer rebate is only for mail-in rebate ( the past deal, not the current one) so good luck if you can still get this combo deal now.

Damn, have to learn how to read- doh!
Instant is only for computer, I totally forgot to add on this printer.:| And they must be both on the same receipt- ugh, this is getting ugly.:Disgust; And if I return the computer, they charge restocking.:(
So no Canon printer for me.

Can someone please post something really terrible about this computer? I'm drawn to this thread like a moth to a flame, tempted to buy a computer that I don't really need.

It's fantastic - fast, no slowdowns, and wonderful for VMWare usage, game playing, and Vista MCE recording with 2 tuners (soon +2 HD tuners) --- all at once. Plus it's supported by someone else for the first year, so no hardware worries, and it's cheap at $750-ish, fully legal, with a licensed Vista, and fully assembled.

:)

HP Pavilion m8120n Minitower

thats about $75.00 more computer for $200.00 more, so no its not as good a deal, with the $200.00 you save on the other deal you could buy 2gb of ram and another 500gb hard drive, and still have some money left over.

Acer gives you, for $200 less $:
1. $40 less RAM, but the HP's is 2 small 512M sticks
2. 160MB less drive space, but the HP's is 2 small 320GB drives; I'd rather have 1 500GB drive and add a 500GB drive later
3. A tv tuner (analog/digital), worth perhaps $80, and with the wireless keyboard and MCE remote (another $40, perhaps?)
4. Note: No 3.5" bays are open; the Acer tower is a better layout with more space and room for drives

I think the Acer is a better deal.

Has anyone identified the motherboard yet? I'm interested now that it's $750 with no rebate. Tax is bad for me though, 9%. :(

This model seems to be available only at Compusa.

That's the question we had. My neighbor has some older equipment that he wants to use with the Acer, but has no Vista drivers, and never will. Thought about going to XP, but then motherboard drivers would be a problem. Let us know if you find XP drivers.

I was impressed with the audio quality ( my ears anyway) of the digital out going to a home theater receiver. Probably not bit perfect, but close enough.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't find Vista such a big deal. It looks pretty though.

yep, grabbed those and that took care of the SMbus. still have an unknown device.
When you guys open your realtek audio panel, in the audio I/O section, under digital, how many connections are there?

I only have 1 black (for SPDIF optical, im assuming)... the yellow spdif coax isnt listed and isnt outputting. ugh.

I picked up another one of these this morning. Last one in stock and the last day of the sale. Sweet deal, even considering the Intel price drops tomorrow.

So Neighbor Bob, owner of this Acer deal decides to load Windows XP Home for now until he gets his Vista capable printer, etc.. I give him a spare SATA drive I had and tell him to just unplug the 500GB drive and plug this one in. Then boot from the XP disc and install. Did not work. Got a blue screen error. Out of curiosity, we load the Acer recovery DVD he made, and it loads up Vista just fine on my SATA drive. So what gives? Something in the bios?

Error codes are: 0x0000007B 0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000
