zonealarm, win patrol, spybot, avast

i'm using a 14 ft cable to the router for the moment. could that slow the transmission down?

Why not investigate and see? Swap the cables around and see if there are any differences. CAT5 is certified for far more than 14 feet, so I'm sure that's fine - unless the cable is defective. Swap the cabling and find out.

But I suspect you'll have a lot more luck by removing all the anti spy/AV software on the machine and seeing what's slowing it down then.

For Vista, particularly on my own network behind my own router, all I'd worry about is running a simple antivirus program...Avast, Symantec AV, whathaveyou. I can't see a point in another firewall - Vista's is quite good.... I'd choose the built-in Windows Defender over Spybot. What's Winpatrol for?

here's something from someone on a vista fourm about the same issue. it appears to be a solution to slow internet on vista. i haven't tried it yet. i'm currently shuttling one monitor back and forth between two computers. that gets old in a hurry. anyway, here's a quote:

Hey, I had the same problem and tried everything, but eventually I changed
which socket I plug into my router with (I have a router (internet splitter)
with 4 ports in the back) and then unplugged the high speed internet box, as
well as the router, plugged them back in, and everything is now working
perfectly.

Hope this helps.
Cheers!

i think i will say bye bye to scotty at win patrol. i'm missing my ad aware se for vista. no beta is available.

In other words, he's saying he had a router problem. While that's certainly possible and something you should try as part of your troubleshooting, I think it's likely too that simply doing the steps listed will find the culprit in just a few minutes.

I picked this up when the original deal was going. I popped in an EVGA 8800GTS 320MB Superoverclocked edition. The video card was an incredibly tight fit but it works. Things are working great and its looks fantastic on a 22 inch Acer widescreen LCD.

I am headed to CompUSA after work to pick up another one for my dad.

I was out shopping for things I don't need, and Compusa was right there. Figured I would go in and take a look at a quad core since I had not seen one.
Not a bad deal, though with the coming Intel price drops it makes it a bit of a less of a deal, IMO.
I took a look inside the case and saw no front fan? and one small rear fan. It was a very quiet running PC, as are most store purchased PCs these days. With some of you guys fitting 2 or more drives, and video cards in there my question would be about heat?
What are the temps like? The salesman said they had seen one return that the customer mentioned it ran hot, like in the 70s under load. That's still probably an OK temp, though getting warm.

Well, that's the advantage of buying from a retailer - it's Acer's issue. I'm not terribly concerned - I have 3 HDDs inside, 1 hanging outside, 1 DVDRW, the nVidia 8800GTS/320, and a PCI hauppauge dual tv tuner card; the drives get burning hot, but otherwise it's not bad.

i picked one of these up on july 7th; the original deal. I love the thing, but the x1650 is amazingly horrible. Talk about a bottleneck. I just picked up a 60$ 7800gtx from evga; hope the psu can handle it.... and i hope it will fit in the case. agh....

Although I did not pick one up myself, I did recommend it to someone who wants a ready built machine. I think I might offer one of my spare cards, a 7600GT, to them, but the ATI x1650 that comes with it may actually be better?

Well, he can have my 7600GT if he wants it then. I'll get to try out his Acer too. Should be fun. Quad power. Say, why do they have a onboard 1650 video and a separate 1650 card too? The card is the larger 256MB?

Intel's GMA3000 video (from the 965 chipset) has nothing to do with ATI's Radeon 1650 video. The 1650SE included with the Acer is, naturally, a lot faster than the Intel built-in video. However poor the 1650SE might be compared to an 8800, it's worlds better than the X3000 built-in video.

OK, I know little of Intel chipsets,CPUs, or ATI video cards. I have been a AMD man for awhile, but that might change for me in the next year depending on what AMD does.

My confusion was with the chipset video. He ran a software program that reports all of the hardware on the PC, and it reported that the main video was the Radeon X1650 Series, and the secondary video was the Radeon X1650 Series too. So, I was thinking the chipset had the same GPU in it.

I'm getting a pic sent of the CPU heatsink, he says it's very large.
Well, I guess so! Ha...

My reward for telling him about this is to sell his old PC parts. Gee, thanks....

Ok, that makes sense since the onboard video should be disabled and it should not show up in the hardware report anyway

Just got the heatsink pic. It is big for a retail PC
It's starting to bug me already that he has a better PC than my overclocked Opty 165.
May have to upgrade myself to a quad core soon.Like I really need one..

OK, I spent some time early today checking out his new Acer. Brought along some DVD files to test video compressing and encoding to compare it to my Opteron 165 that is overclocked to 2.6GHz. Wow, some of the video tasks with the Q6600 took half the time. Impressive stuff.

There is 2GB of DDR2-667 in the Acer. Would it benefit him to go up to DDR-800 on this board? Timings look pretty mundane on the stock ram too. I'm thinking not since gaming is not much of a concern. How about adding 2 more GB? I'm thinking not on that too since it's a 32 Bit Vista that can't use more than 3GB anyway.

Thanks

When you go into the BIOS, what memory timings can you adjust?

When you look at the Q6600, it's 266, so how will adding /800 memory increase any speed?

Do you do any tasks that require 3.25GB of RAM? What benefit is there to going from 2 - > 3.25GB for the apps you use?

"When you go into the BIOS, what memory timings can you adjust?"

I'm not there right now, I'll have to walk back over there later today and check.
Free beer anyway. Gotta love retired life folks..

He says CPU-Z indicates 4-4-4-12 at 266 MHz. That should be fine.

"When you look at the Q6600, it's 266, so how will adding /800 memory increase any speed?"

OK, gotcha. With a stock FSB of 266 in the Q6600, Stock ram speed is fine, and PC2-5300 ram is not being used fully anyway. Overclocking would be a different story, which won't happen on this board.

"Do you do any tasks that require 3.25GB of RAM? What benefit is there to going from 2 - > 3.25GB for the apps you use?"

I'll have to check and see what he runs.
I want to get educated on this since I will probably go for a quad CPU myself.
I'll just experiment on his rig.

i called acer to ask their opinion on my slower internet with vista issue, and the acer guy refused to believe that the machine had a quad core processor in it. said it must have been a misprint on the box. gradually, i was able to convince him that it really did have a quad processor. i'm pretty sure acer manufactured the machine, right? :) he kept telling me it was dual core. go figure.

B - it would take you 10 minutes tops to uninstall all the software I have listed out for you. Have you done that yet?
