What's the biggest nvidia video card you would recommend I can put in w/o having to upgrade the ps? I want to start gaming on this but I doubt I need to absolute top of the line card...how's the card that's in this system compare to the nvidia cards? Thanks!

If you're just doing 1024x768 and don't need to go beyond that, you'll be fine for all but the most recent games. If you post examples of what you want to do and what resolutions and AA levels, we could then tell you something.

I am also interested in adding a new graphics card. I am going to wait to order it until one of you guys says an 8800 GTS or similarly sized card will fit. If not, I'll just go with an 8600 GTS.

If the 8800 GTS will fit, I'll try it with the stock PSU and see what happens. I just have the single HD and optical drives that came with it and only plan to add the new video card. We'll see if this PSU can handle it.

I just picked up the EVGA 8800 GTS today, and it fits!

My situation is the same as you, all I've added is the video card. I just played Oblivion with all settings maxed for over an hour, and I ran through 3DMark06 as well with no problems, so I'm thinking the PSU is fine...

My EVGA 8800GTS fits as well, naturally, but I had to remove the 3.5" HDD that was parallel to it - it's too long to allow that drive to fit in the drive cage, so now I'm down to 3 3.5" HDDs in the case, rather than 4 3.5" HDDs in the case.

So now I have 8800GTS/320, 4x500GB (one's mounted externally and hanging from the PC - ugly), 1x Hauppauge Dual Tuner, 1x5.25" DVD+-RW, and 4x1GB of RAM. For heat reasons I've removed 1 of the TV tuners, so now I can record 2 shows at once, rather than 3.

Makes you wonder why anyone buys larger power supplies, doesn't it?

I haven't opened up my machine yet so I haven't seen the PSU connections, but did you need an adapter to power up the 8800 GTS? Or did your video card come with one?

Yes, the 8800GTS needs a 6-pin PCI power connection, and the Acer did not have one (since the included ATI card doesn't use one). The EVGA 8800GTS that I picked up did include the adapter however, so I was all set...

Awesome. Thanks guys. As soon as I get home from work tonight I will be dropping the hammer on the EVGA 8800 GTS 320MB factory OCed to 576Mhz and a 22 Inch Widescreen Acer display.

Sorry if I missed this info, but has this rebate deal expired? I see the system listed as $899.99, no mention of a rebate...

Look for this deal again after Intel slashes its prices which I believe is sometime at the end of this month...

I'd look at other factors - I've never seen a difference. Firefox in Vista slow too?

It's still a fantastic deal. It's been running for the past 4 days in the posted config with no issues... I'm happy with it.

Thanks for the update, picked one up an hour ago at the superstore in Manhattan, on 38th St. and Fifth Ave. There were still 5 in stock when I left.
Rebate is instant, so even sweeter!

so, dclive, you got your issue worked out with the video card?

The issue is with the nv6200 and nv driver (not the driver from update.ms.com). That's gone because I'm now using the nv8800.

nice!

but lo, the internet is abysmally slow on vista compared with XP. i'm talking comcast high speed, and take your pick of browsers. it doesn't matter. i tried tweaking every aspect of vista. that speeds the machine, but not the internet. so here i am with my amd single core machine enjoying the speed of the internet. guess i'll just switch between both machines for the time being until some kind of internet speeder upper comes along for vista.

maybe it's the difference in video cards. my old machine has a bfg 7600 GT.

If I were you I'd look at other factors, as networking in Vista is very, very good.

For example, if you remove (not disable) all firewalls, antivirus programs, antispyware programs, etc. (and then only surf on www.cnn.com and www.msnbc.com) is it still slow?

You're behind a router? If so, you're fine for a quick test. What, exactly, of those, do you have installed, and what versions?
