like it or not heres my two cents. i went for this deal because i needed and upgrade from my current 2500+ A7N8X deluxe. Both Via and Nvidia still need to get thier act together with current chipsets. i myself is looking for nvidia's nForce3-250Gb Ultra. i'm hoping they will port the workstation nForce3-250Gb Ultra PRO to a 939 socket, guessing either one will include NCQ (native command queing) or implement the new SATA II standard. PCI-E im not too interested in yet, along with DDR-2. I was burnt the first time around when NF2 recieved a revision, this time i knowingly purchased this kt800 non pro solution. when november comes around there will be price cuts across the board.

AMD pricing schedule

200 is a good price for a "temp" upgrade solution. and i do want to see what will happen when they shrink to a 90nm process. So go out and get this deal if you can, cuz in two months the prices will come down on procs and you will prolly see a clear winner among chipsets ( kt800 pro, NF3 250 ). by then.

Just to note the Overclockers pricing projection is not official, it is an estimate based on AMD previous method/response of price cuts after Intels.

Oh, and the 2800 is always above or equal to the 3.2 p4 in games.

On occassion it does score above the 3.2 but not on the avg, check out the review below and you can see the A64 3000+ scores, the 2800+ should scale to same level slightly behind it. The 3000+ doesnt always even outscore the 3.2 P4, so before saying it always does research and be more honest, in some cases they A64 series is better but not always. For the price I would say this combo is the best bang for the buck tho.

I'm keeping this for the foreseeable future. My net price was about $200 + tax for the combo (Abit & 2800+), sold the motherboard for $85 and got an nforce3 250 for $89 shipped. It's plenty fast overclocked to 2GHz right now. I'll push it more later... 2GHz is the highest it does at default voltage.

When A64s fall steeply in price, I'll consider upgrading. But I don't see lack of speed being a motivation to upgrade any time soon.

OK then, ill rephrase. Ive done MUCH research, and in Unreal based games and FarCry in particular, it whoops the 3.2. In others its slightly behind or equal.

Abit board and CPU are both back in Stock.. got in on the deal this time. Hurry. this wont last long again. Also, it seems like Newegg got a new supply of CPUs today...maybe these are the better overclockable CG stepping ??

Just wondering as to which board is better:

Abit KV8 (that comes with this deal) - Via KT800 chipset
Chaintech VNF3-250 - NForce 3 250 Chipset

I am thinking that the chaintech is better...so i ordered that and will be selling the Abit mobo....did i make a wise decision ?

thanks

Is there an option to just install the regular 32bit system on this, like Win2K Pro? I am debating whether it's worth it at this point, as this seems VERY BLEEDING EDGE to me. I've had enough BE projects, and am just wondering if I should just stick with my Abit NF7S/2500XP mobile. I doubt I will see any improvement in 32bit, and 64bit seems far off. I would not want to rely on the freebie WinXP 64 bit, either, as I'm sure M$ would tug my nuts later. The price is right, though, selling my current combo would yield probably around $140, so for $60 it's almost a no-brainer, but still...

Anybody can convince me either way?

For overclocking the Chaintech Nforce 3 board is a much better choice as the Abit in this deal doesnt have PCI/AGP lock and limits upping the fsb. Otherwise I don't think there is too much difference.

Performance is quite good with these processors compared to the XP series, the 2800+ in this deal at stock will outperform an xp3200+ in all or almost all tests, outscores a p4 3.2 in some tests and at worst scores on par with a p4 2.8 northwood/prescott but avgs more around p4 3.0 performance (thats all in 32-bit performance). You should be able to install Win2k Pro or regular XP home/pro on it if you dont want to mess with the 64 bit XP trial.

COOL. Thanks for the info, looks like a not-to-miss deal, if anything, it will get me some experience with 64bit. And I can always run 64bit Linux on this, yay! Now I can only hope the package comes when the wife is not around...

Hell of a deal !

I paid $280 just for the 3200+ CPU. But I must say, it really is worth every penny. Those chips are fast as hell.

&$!@! It just has to go back in stock right when my internet connection goes down. I am not amused. :|
