hey I needed a new mobo and cpu, and have not had a mobo cpu for 2 months. Considering that I dont have anything now and was waiting for a good deal. Do you think this is one to jump on or should I wait for later???

They're selling a combo for nearly 33% less than the market price; I'd say it doesn't get much better than this.

So, I've been ignoring the A64 craze up till now. Do these require registered RAM?

What modules would you guys recommend for this system? 333 or 400? Any particular company over a different one?

Chaintec is in stock now. Threw it in my cart for sh1ts and giggles. Forces Far Cry in to my cart for $25. Final price of $223. Any way around that?

You have to wait for the Abit board to come back in stock for the $198 deal, Chaintech is only available with the farcry bundle deal for $223.

Either board should be the same for running @ stock, neither of them have a PCI/AGP lock so have very limited fsb o/c ability. They removed the Abit from the farcry bundle so its the best deal if you can catch it in stock, and looks better IMO, but if you want to get it you need to fill out the auto-notify as they tend to sell out rather fast once back in stock. If you need something now the Chaintech with Farcry + Cpu for $223 is a decent deal, and can easily sell off the game. Read first page of the thread for the link to expected price cuts and decide if you want to wait. I caved in myself, I couldnt resist at this price vs having to wait. Like some others have said this will work nicely till BTX, PCI Express, DDR2 and all the other new technologies are mainstream.

Gonna answer 2 in 1 this time:

DDR400 would be the best choice vs DDR333.

Memory Support Test @ Tom's Hardware

So, I've been ignoring the A64 craze up till now. Do these require registered RAM?

Standard unbuffered non-ECC or ECC ram works. From what I have read it does not work with registered memory. I also believe its recommended (from Newegg product desc) to only run 2 sticks of pc3200 while it runs 3 sticks of pc2700 fine.

Information on the ABIT KV8 (this taken from Crucial)
184-pin DIMM Banking: 3 (3 banks of 1)
Chipset: VIA K8T800
DDR SDRAM Frequencies: PC1600, PC2100, PC2700, and PC3200
Error Detection Support: ECC and non-ECC
Max Unbuffered DDR SDRAM: 2048MB
Module Types Supported: Unbuffered only
Supported DRAM Types: DDR SDRAM only

Have mine right here. Running on the Chaintech. Ask away, ill answer any and all questions.

Its a little faster in games and synthetics then my Tbred @ 2400mhz ( :) ). In Sandra it scores lower almost across the board in the CPU tests, but like i said in apps it works GREAT.

I didnt time XP. Seemed no longer then usual. I dont use SATA, so i cant comment on that. Installing without using it was easy.

Ahh, got my order placed. On a side note, does anyone know what exactly Newegg is doing here? They run out, but then these boards come back in stock at about 6pm PST; I can't imagine Newegg's getting a new shipment every day, so why would they be doing this intentionally? How is it benefitting them?

Edit: I think I agree with Nitrus post below.

Abit is probably unloading as many of these as they can as fast as possible since they now have the Pro version available which will have a bios update to allow the PCI/AGP lock. These non-pro versions will not be able to updated with a lock.

its possible they are getting shipments everyday from their suppliers. just remember it takes a while from receiving, inventory, to posting available. im pretty sure they get huge shipments everyday so logging inventory must be very difficult.

I concur... I used to work for a computer shop, and we would get shipments of stuff in everyday.

Click on checkout and you'll see the discount applied to knock the price down to $198.

did you mess around with overclocking it yet, or are you gonna leave it at stock speeds?

Still no auto-notify e-mail from Newegg that it's back in stock - I think they're just torturing people at this point.
