I probably would have done the same thing in the OP's position. His kids are all legally adults anyway and have to start taking responsibility for their own mistakes. She'll hate you for it now, but hopefully will thank you later.

Have you ever been in prison? I dont want my kids there. EVER. Dont care how big a juvenile mistake it is. How would texasdiaper have reacted if his kids had been arrested for drinking?

You're fine, your kids need to suffer the consequences of their actions to learn from their mistakes.

your kids (except navy) and your ex sound like losers.

do NOT support them financially.
they sound like the welfare "where's my free $" type

and why didn't her mom bail her out???

oh, and I think u did the right choice.

I've spent my fair share of time behind bars. It's not that bad and gives you plenty of time to think about the stuff you did that put you there.

This. OP states up front, the daughter is 18 and lives with his EX, her Mom.

So then why didnt MOM bail her out?

Or did she call Dad cause she figured he would cause she knew Mom wouldn't?

Dealing with a child that may potentially have a drug problem can turn into a never ending mess. Better to have her life blow up in her face now than shield her and let the problem drag out.

How is throwing a tantrum as a parent helping? By not living with the kids and not spending time with them he is doing far worse. You cant expect a child of an absentee parent to care what they say when they are angry. Sorry you cant parent when your not there no matter how hard you try to be and how many rules you make.

Smoking pot as a teenager is common. in 2010 21 percent of high schoolers smoked pot at least once in the last month. Shes a fucking moron for smoking K2 obviously but the act and incarceration are just simptoms of their lack of relationship.

Most AFK dads should either man up and be there and be a dad or stfu.

How much time have you spent with her the last two months OP?

How many eventing have you spent together watching TV and not talking?

Parenting is pretty hard.

I'm not there, I don't know what he does or doesn't do as a parent for his child. I don't see letting a kid spend a night or two in jail as such an unforgivable act. It's not like he's denying her money for an operation.

For once, I agree with your decision.

On the other hand I don't really give a crap about your blogging. If you're really that satisfied with what you've done you wouldn't have come here seeking validation from the anonymous fuckheads we are at ATOT.

when my four year hurts their knee they run to daddy. I will pick them up and hug them and ask them if they are OK irregardless if they were running in the house like they arent supposed to. Sure a 18 year old is no 4 year old but in that moment of weakness and fear. Probably the most scared she has ever been she called for her daddy. AND HE WASNT THERE for her.

If they were estranged this would have been a good opportunity for him to reestablish their relationship and work trough things together.

Being a hard ass doesnt work unless they respect you. Do OPs kids respect him?

Maybe the disconnect between our opinions is because we just don't see spending time in jail the same way? You obviously view this event as being much more traumatic than I do.

I could totally get on board with you but not over something like spending a night in jail for possession.

Mom doesn't get any money from TH anymore. Probably broke.

I spent about 11 hours in a prison in mexico for a fight in TJ. Would not want my girls in there !

Maybe its because I view texas as a third world nation....

If he lived Connecticut we may have answered differently lol

This was a fork in the road for you as a parent. I personally think you just alienated your kids and will die old and alone.

Thank you. While I respect your opinion, I disagree with it.

This is not the first time my daughter has been caught with K2. The first time was at my house and I made her flush it. That was 2 years ago.

I sat down with her, tried to explain she was throwing her life away, she did not listen.

Her mom bailed her out.

So now mom is the hero and dad is the bad guy.

Maybe she'll realize it ain't all that bad, and take a more relaxed approach when it comes to abiding by the law.

By bailing her out of jail you keep her convinced that jail is very bad, all the stories she hears are true, and it is some place you never want to be. Now that you left her in, she's just part of the system now.

Congratulations ruining your daughter's life? I don't know if you came for a pat on the back because you think you taught her a lesson. She probably learned more about the world that night in jail than you could ever teach her by yourself.

Good thing it was K2 and not trespass cattle. Otherwise you would have had to arm up and break her out of jail.

Yeah I know. It would a tongue-in-cheek response too. After all, threads like this pay to keep the lights on here. :)

My third son is in the navy, serving on a nuclear submarine and is out on maneuvers right now.

He should not have to worry about his brothers and sisters getting in trouble while he is gone.

Frankly, the one on the submarine is usually the being worried about.

Wow, I would not have expected that. You seem like a pretty levelheaded guy on these forums.

There's a difference between supporting your family and being an "enabler".

I think it'd be important to sit down with your daughter, explain to her the truths about drugs and which ones she totally needs to avoid at all costs. But then tell her that smart people simply don't get caught or put friends in a position where they might get caught.
