The DX11 patch will require a DX11 card, but the High-resolution texture pack will work on any card(at least 1GB of VRAM) as long as your OS is x64

You can overclock a 6950 to almost the same speed.

After this version of southern islands they've got a radically new architecture planned that will do parallel processing competitive with cuda. Added to a bulldozer chip it means serious cpu physics and AI that won't slow down your graphics card.
 
That's awesome! Personally I don't really care about the DX11 and people whined way too much about it, but that's cool and so are higher res textures. And it didn't take that long to do.

Of course, I can't say I don't care about DX11 because my CPU (AMD X2 5400+) is way slow, my GPU (4870) is not that fast anymore, lacking in VRAM (512mb), and I guess the real killer is no DX11 support on the GPU anyway. That will all be resolved in a month or two with a new rig and Windows 7.

Any type of patch is good whether new content, bug fixes, balance, or try and stop the losers that cheat. So I'm glad to see Crytek support the game, though it's not like I expected them to release, say fuck it and move on like some others do.

I can agree (to a certain degree) with this. While we didn't get the sequel we really wanted, Crysis 2 IMHO was still a pretty good game in it's own right. It's nice to see Crytek finally go back to us PC gamers for a bit of redemption after they pretty much left us out in the cold by going all "open relationship/swinger" on us, but come back to us because we are the only ones who really can and do love them. Even Cevat Yerli admitting to foreseeing the impact that has happened is trying to make amends for throwing us by the wayside. I think that's why the DX11 update is so substantial.

Holy crap, didn't realize the price difference between the two, especially when the 6950 hits a sale. I knew you could flash ref 6950s to 6970s so I assumed they'd be maybe $20/30 different, in which case I would want to have grabbed a 6970 just for the extra headroom.

Alright, well that settles it. A 6950 and a Phenom II 965 BE upgrade this fall; my 550 BE is getting pretty long in the tooth as well. B3 is obviously going to take advantage of multiple cores if BC2 was any indication.

The 965 is a waste of money too. A 955 will overclock as well as any of the quad cores and anything over 3.4 ghz is gravy anyway. The only reason to buy a better quad is to avoid overclocking.
 
Picked up a GTX 580 when this was released and now I have no motivation to reinstall it and try out the enhancements.

I was trying to be realistic, I'm under the impression that the 955 would be discontinued by the time of my purchase. Whatever the cheapest black edition 4 core Phenom II is available will be the one in my cart; thanks for the heads up. 🙂

Glad to help. Hard core PC gamers already paid their dues and its nice to see people reaping the benefits. I've got a 940 @ 3.4 ghz myself and see no reason to upgrade anytime soon. At the rate AMD is going with fusion chips capable of crossfire and bulldozer about to be released Intel better start focusing more on graphics or concede most of the PC gaming market. Reputation and consumer buying habits can only carry you so far.
 
I don't get this bit about Intel and focusing on graphics, people playing crysis 2 with the dx11 patch aren't using integrated graphics except in a mobile platform. Those 6950's with phenom II chip systems get smoked by similar builds using a cheap 2500k. Unless you're on a tight budget and can only upgrade the CPU and not the mobo too going for AMD over Intel makes no sense.

Right now I agree it would be foolish to not buy an i5 if you can afford it and can't wait for bulldozer, but we aren't talking about people buying the latest and greatest. We're talking about how to save serious cash in the long run and many gamers routinely upgrade their PC over many years time. If waiting for bulldozer to come will save them big bucks in the long run, that's what they'll do.

Sometimes I have a good laugh at all the Intel fanboys who complain later that its hardly worth upgrading their processors. The sockets become outdated fast and its often more worthwhile to just replace the entire mobo and ram as well. That adds up pretty fast when your talking about not only $100.oo difference in processor prices, but also having to replace the mobo and ram years sooner or put up with lower performance. Intel is aimed more your average home computer that never gets anything more then a graphics card upgrade and enthusiasts who are willing to spend a lot for the latest and greatest. Sure, its great for instant gratification, but the hangover can be a killer.

Just did a quick play of Crysis 2 with the new DX 11 & High res patches. The game runs at at average of 30-40 FPS on ultra settings @1920 x1080 on my new Alienware M18X. Not the highest FPS but definitely playable. This is my first experience with the game but I will say I'm impressed thus far.
 
looks amazing, and runs surprisingly good! I thought this was going to crush my 570, but it always stays between 30-50 fps! Now I can actually play the game, I haven't even beaten it yet, lol.
