Except their vaccine turned out to be a bit crap and they didn't want to admit it and import any, but because their lockdowns suppressed the outbreak so well they ended up in a weird stasis.

So is the idea that they knew their vaccines were ineffective and just didn’t do anything?

I’m not saying you’re wrong, that appears to have been their answer, but it is baffling.

Well by the time that they found out that their vaccine was crap they were in a holding pattern that was "working". So it was admit to the world that they couldn't get a vaccine off the ground after watching the rest of the world do it or carry on doing what they were doing (which was suppressing the spread of covid surprisingly well) and hope it gave them time to get a vaccine out.
I know they have been working on an mRNA one but I'm not sure how it's going.

This is obviously just speculation on my part.

I really wish the perspectives you offer were publicly widely shared and prominently expressed in Covid discussions everywhere.
 
Remember in the early days of the lockdowns, it was "Flatten the curve". It was more of not overwhelming the hospitals rather than trying to prevent all infections. Surpsied to see CHina swing so far in in the opposite direction after "Zero COVID".

IMO China panicked. There were an increasing number of protests against zero covid which could not be quelled by their usual suppression measures. They found themselves backed into a corner and just threw up their hands.

It was happening already. They lifted the zero covid policy partly so they could blame lifting it for the burgeoning crisis. The crisis was already well in progress, they had kept that hidden as well as they could.

Another Pandora's box now at work.

She makes it very clear this isn't just something that sprang up after relaxation of zero covid policies. The covid situation there has been critical since at least October but it's been kept hush hush due to very tight Beijing information restrictions. She says the CCP ended zero covid policy abruptly so they could blame the White Paper Movement and ending zero covid policy for the burgeoning outbreak, when in fact the outbreak was already happening but was being whitewashed, hidden.

She then takes to task western governments and western media for not publicizing the extent of the outbreak BEFORE the lifting of zero covid policy. They knew, their actions made this clear, but they were quiet about it, they refrained from embarrassing the CCP, which is a big mistake. The CCP itself is concerned with their own survival as the ruling class in China. Preventing deaths there are secondary, or to be more explicit, of no concern.

And as she says, access the less censored sources of information, e.g. Youtube videos and the stuff that's escaping Chinese censorship, social media posts, etc.

Err scandals are the norm there. As long as it can be scrubbed off the news, internet and anyone who says anything can be detained and re-educated, it's good.

The Chinese govt trolls/bots have been spreading misinformation about the 'dangers' of western mrna vaccines like Pfizer so that makes it harder for them to import Pfizer vaccines for their elderly population.

According to the videos posted above by m8d the Chinese who are scrambling to take advantage of the very recent lift on travel by China have 2 things in mind:

1. Get mRNA vaxxed ASAP when they get to their beyond-China destination.

2. Grab as much sorely needed medication as they can, e.g. ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc.

As made clear in the videos, countries like the USA, UK, Japan, So. Korea, etc. would do well to insist on testing travelers from China as prerequisite to entry. China's doing it to them.

The CCP does not want to cooperate with international efforts to control covid. They want to maintain the illusion that they are capable. They are not apt to accept foreign help. Watch those 2 videos above in this thread by Lei.

You are not understanding. It blows up online, then gets quickly covered up to stop the outrage from spreading. Then the people that know are rounded up and threatened.

Authoritarian governments only have one option in the playbook. Squeeze tighter. Surely that will fix the problem.

Less than a day after I posted this the USA announced they will require visitors from China to have a negative PCR or antigen test before being admitted. It will take effect Jan. 5, 2023. Several other countries have made similar announcements.

Well, there's not face left to be saved. They have blown it worse than anywhere. It's 3 years now and they have disgraced themselves, it's clear to anyone who isn't snowed.

I can't even imagine spending 3 years with few freedoms and lots of lockdowns, finally get your freedoms, only to fly to Italy and be quarantined upon arrival. More than half are Covid positive in initial flights to Italy.

On the first flight to Malpensa that tested passengers from China out of 62 passengers 35 were Covid positive, Lombardy’s health chief Guido Bertolaso said on Wednesday, while on the second 62 were positive out of 120...they would have to quarantine in buildings set aside by the local health authorities.
