You definitely could.

A wolf is really not very different from a large dog. It will jump you, and lock its jaws on something. If that something is an arm/leg, you basically have at least one from arms to either choke it, or to hit it in the throat/head.

Of course there's a decent change it would inflict enough damage so that you later die of blood loss ....

Anyway, there's a reason why wolves attack in packs to bring down prey, which is that individually, they're not nearly as powerful as some of the larger predators.

Exactly, they are living off their reputation.

Some dogs get really upset by black things. My mate's dog would go mental if you started waving a black bin-liner near him so a wolf might suffer the same way.

The big difference between wolves and dogs, is a wolf needs to be aggressive to survive. Dogs are aggressive because they're dicks, but if a wolf isn't, he doesn't get to eat. His whole life has been a daily practice of fucking things up so he can live. I'd prefer not going up against that kind of dedication.

at 6'4" 210lbs and in great cardio and physical shape, id like to think i could fend off a wolf. im not sure if i could kill one though, id probably just gouge the eyes and it would run off

I think an in shape adult human male would have about a 30% chance against a single wolf and almost no chance against a pack.

But wolves aren't indiscriminately aggressive. Wolves will only take calculated risks as a result of evolution. Whereas you could breed a dog that has no self preservation instincts at all and only cares about fucking shit up.

Probably to be honest I'd be like most people attacked by a dog, piss myself and be a little bitch. Just like most of the people in this thread would do ;)

id definitely get scared. but if the dog seemingly wants to kill me i would hope MY survival instincts would kick in too...

if it was a big pitbull or something then i dont know. their necks are so full of muscle youre not going to choke them. give them your left arm, they lock on it and then you have a little time to go after their soft spots... thats about it

A human can do damage with his/her hands that no natural prey could, so I wouldn't even worry. I'd take some damage while going for the eyes. It would leave me alone quickly or be severely and permanently disabld.

LOL you're basing your survival off the idea that you could distract a wild animal with a trash bag...

yea let me know how that works out for you

btw, if i have my steel toe boots on and a chance to punt a dog or wolf like a football, then the animal would have no chance. ive been a construction worker for 11 years, running around all day on my feet. i could easily kill a dog with one kick to the head, IF i got a good shot at it. big if though.

I reckon I could. I have been doing some good work down the gym recently so my strong shoulders would give me an edge.

I reckon it could hinge on the surroundings. If it was in Yellowstone Park then it would be a struggle, but if it was near where I live I would have the advantage. I know all the alleys and roads so could be all sneaky.

Sneaky? Seriously....

You're going up against an animal that smells, hears, and reacts better than you possibly can. If you survive you'd take serious wounds. Then there's the rest of the pack to deal with...

But this would be a city environment. There would be smells and noises he wouldn't know about.

I could even carry around one of those sound effects gadgets that make machine gun noises.

He would be really confused, especially if I had one of those air freshener things that people put in their cars.

If a wolf wanted to kill you, given your scenario, it would still have a better chance. It is a predator by nature and its hunting skills are not entirely out of place in an unfamilar environment.

Now if you're basing how a wolf would really react if it just got transplanted from its natural environment into a the middle of a busy city then I'm sure it would freak the fuck out and you would never see it and would never have to fight it (but it would probably still kick your ass if you got caught by one).

Your scenario places too many contradicting conditions in your favor to be up for valid arguments. You want to fight a wolf but you'll put it in a totally new environment and you expect it to pick a fight with you at the same time. I'd say you can have one or the other but neither will prove you will win.

Also a wolf isn't going to get freaked out or confused by an airfreshener if it wanted to kill you. I'm pretty sure it feels the same thing about your 'machine gun noise' device

It would just adapt to associate the smell of food with cheap pine trees :^D

Out in the sticks, with no tools, a wolf would wear you down and eat you eventually. They are not going to rush in there and expose themselves to injury. Millions of years of evolution have bred that behavior out.
It would work your perimeter and start doing some damage, without exposing itself to any sort of grapple attack by you.
Best you could do is find a defensible position and hope it got bored/hurt enough by whatever tool you could find, and leave.

You realize that wolves are pretty skittish around and generally don't attack humans right?

Watch this vid of a coyote working this guy. This is a lone hungry 40~50lb coyote, as jules points out normally skittish around humans as well. Now, put a 90 lb + wolf in the same spot.

without tools you would be in deep doo-doo.

LOL. That was VICIOUS!

As someone pointed out, one wolf would probably get his ass kicked by a guy in decent shape. Wolves are dangerous because they hunt in packs. A wolf pack could kill any unarmed man pretty easily. One wolf, not so much. Plus, I'd be really surprised to see a lone wolf attack a human anyway. We've got some pretty big predators around here, and attacks resulting in death are all but non-existant.

My friend was walking through a secluded area here in OC (much of our county backs up to wilderness), and he was suddenly attacked from behind by 3 coyotes. They nipped his ankle and he went to the ground instantly.

Luckily he is one of those survivalist nutters and had a knife on his waist. As two of them started to take little nibbles on his legs, he shoved the blade up through the lower jaw of one of the coyotes, and it ended up inside the brain, killing it rather instantly.

I would have called BS on the story, but we were all waiting for him, and he showed up with bite marks and a bloody/hairy knife. Moral of the story: Even pussy canines like Coyotes can be dangerous.

Hopefully it was actually coyotes and not someone he murdered.

I've read that if you're faced with a mountain lion, you should hold your jacket/coat/blanket above your head, with the fabric hanging down. The object is to make yourself look as large as possible, to convince the cat that you're too big to take down.

I wonder if that would work with a wolf or three.
