He generalizes all major breweries, while putting Europe on a pedistal. Several breweries, besides Anheuser-Busch or Miller, or Coors, produce alot of beer to qualify as a macro/major company. One of the best, right in your own state, Sierra Nevada(the 10th biggest brewery in America), produces a big list of styles, using many different & unique hops & malts, brewing up many different styles of beer. Even Budweiser, now produces an a pretty good, no adjunct, all malt brew at about $7 a bottle. Sam Adams(6th Biggest in America), one of the top beer produces quantity wise in the whole country, puts out bottle after bottle of beer that does not use derivatives, or filler. They put out $100 bottles, they put out old style ales, they make much better then average beer.

By contrast, there are many breweries that operate in Europe, that do nothing, but produce cheap beer for the masses. Rice & corn & additional extracts are used worldwide to cut costs, not just here. Alot of big Euro imports are actually brewed here to save on transport costs, using local water.

Like the poster above has said, America is leading the craft beer movement. There are more quality breweries being started up, & more bottles being put out then ever. Breweries from Belgium & beyond come here, to learn & experience & co-produce with the American companies.

It's beer, it's meant to be enjoyed. There is so much out there, that there is truly, something unique for everyone.

Very well said!

I really only hate crappy mass-brewed beer (all AB and Miller products) and very dark beers (Guinness). And I hate them all because of taste. AB and Miller products just don't taste right to me.. maybe it's the amount of water or the crappy ingredients they use. Very dark beers taste like dirt or burnt coffee, neither of which are enjoyable. Give me a good medium colored microbrew.

Not at all true. Stouts will almost certainly taste that way (although I don't agree that it tastes like dirt, it is often bitter like bad coffee--burnt coffee doesn't really taste bitter as all the solubles, including caffeine, have been volatized in the roasting process), but it's part of the style. It would be like criticizing IPA for its hoppy character.

There are many darker ales that a lot more like carmel, chocolate, fruits, etc. than dirt. Belgian Strong Ales in particular can be quite dark, especially those with double to quadruple the malts. My favorite producers of these styles are probably Westmalle, Westvleteren, Rochefort, St Bernardus, and others I'm forgetting.

[edit]I guess we could be arguing semantics. "Very dark" to you might mean only Stout, for example.[/edit]

Yes, very dark to me means stouts. I know that there are dark colored brews which don't exhibit these flavor characteristics, but stouts all pretty much taste like burnt coffee to me.

Very dark also certainly includes Porters.
Though there are a lot of "very dark" looking beers that are not stouts or porters. For instance, Three Floyds Robert the Bruce (Scottish Ale), It's very dark, and yet it's super smooth and tastes nothing like a stout.

If I'm just kicking back with a few friends then there's no better beer than Budweiser or a few Coronas. If I want something with taste and kick I go with the Belgium ales. They're expensive but 3 will give you an excellent buzz.

Umm .... Corona and Heineken are not anywhere close to "the most expensive". They are generally more expensive than domestic macros, however, they are much less expensive than more than 90% of the beers out there. You just probably haven't heard of or seen most of them.

I like pretty much all beers, except for McEwans Scotch Ale, and while Corona and Heinekin are drinkable and certainly better than not having any beer at all, they are just boring lagers IMO.

So, what is it about beer that is considered piss in Mexico made you ever think it was good? Oh...it must be the gobs of money they spend on advertising. I see...like Budweiser, Miller, etc...sure....all good beers, they are.

marketing can do amazing things, a prime example is tricking americans to think Corona is actually a good beer. i wonder how many people drink one and have the beach front commercials flash through their head wishing they were there. compared to say budweiser where you drink one and one pictures clydesdales clomping through a snow covered road pulling a wagon with two men dressed like firemen and a dalmation. which one of those images is sexier and and has more public appeal to buy your product???

If you think Corona is gross, wait until you try Guinness... that stuff is just plain nasty. I personally drink Yuengling (PA beer ftw :p).

I don't like Corona... and really don't care for Mexican beers in general. I think the worst beers I've ever had are Sol and Tecate. I usually drink ales.

I personally think the McDonalds of beer would have to be Bud light.

I suppose you are a real brewer? Have you thought that maybe some of us actually are brewers? Maybe some of us have even studied brewing history, styles, and methods.

Indeed. Here's me turning barley (2 row) into wort http://johnmearns.com/albums/allgrainbrew/DSCN1336.sized.jpg

5 gallons? Pffffttt. ;)

Buy an empty 1/2bbl keg and convert it to a 10 gallon system like I have.

that's the second instance of 7-11 hate in this thread. WTH? My local 7-11 stocks Snow Cap Ale Ain't nothin' wrong with that!

I've also noticed two mentions of Yuengling's. It's making my mouth water. Anyone know where I could get cases of that fine brew online? That stuff's hard to come by in the Portland, OR metro area. It's nothing fancy, but damn good beer.

Please help, I haven't had a single drop of Yuenglings in about 5 years.
