I think that we're in violent agreement, hehe. Civics suffer the same way. If I could find a clean SI I'd buy it in a heartbeat for a second track/toy car... but good f'n luck!

"Violent Agreement"?
I like it.

I'm going to save that one.
Gonna slip it into a work conversation. See what happens

Nah, VW across the board is a chick's car. Just like the Mini.

"Chick's car"?
That term isn't really a thing anymore.
Even when it was a thing, it said more about the person saying it than the actual car.

If you would like to talk about cars where the data indicates "women like this" then its a fairly simple list. Every CUV and SUV on the market from the Honda HRV to the Dodge Durango.

The only mans car that is still on the market is the Ford Transit.
It is operated by testicles and it is impossible for women with their tiny lady brains and makeup kits to drive.

tis true.
PBS did a special on it.

olds is a really old man with a really old oldman brain. I'd just let him have it. I mean, I certainly get it if you are thinking Cabriolet or Beetle/Bug.

Exploding hood is a safety feature for when you run people over IIRC.

No, not joking! That Buick is rebadged Opel and they're big on pedestrian safety in Europe.

I'd love a Vista Cruiser. Imagine the looks you'd get dropping off the kids at school!

I mean, it's not without its charm.

Graddad drove this badboy around until he passed in ~1990

I normally would have let it pass but I had that whole testicle operated Ford Transit thing drown up on a napkin.
I needed a lead up and he presented an opportunity.

You know what, I neglected to respond properly to that comment because I was googling images for boat-sized oldsmobile coupes from the 70s. So, here is the proper response to

Just because someone says something doesn't mean it's true.
Um, unless I say it that is. :)

Carl Weathers said that in his one man show, "Ghosts of Toledo" back in 1968. Whats interesting is that when it gets to that part in the song where he says "Just because someone says something doesn't mean it's true.", he ad that stage hand give a film camera to a member of the audience.
That simple act inspired Nancy Wzchowski so much that it led to the invention of Tostitos.
The car Nancy drove to that show?
A 1967 VW Karmann Ghia.

Proved your point that VW's are girls cars

My wife and I toyed with the idea of buying a restored Vista Cruiser instead of a new car. What we really want is the Vista Cruiser body with modern guts. My guess is that would come in at $100K+ and still not get the airbags. :(

Stupid mortgage bank sent me a $2k escrow refund for 2018/estimated 2019 property taxes because I submitted state tax rebate last year and they overcharged me all year--I live like a pauper--and they reduced my mortgage by $200 bucks for the next year.

So, I have two options:

1: buy a new car
2: reinvest all of that back into principle

Oh, one option. I thought I had 2 options, but I must have forgotten the other one.

There is a crazy dutchmen who might have a fantastic and unique, slightly used, golf on the market at some point in the future.
He shortened the body a bit as well, for proper small car feel.

Think that would be a proper way to head back home down 95? I like the idea.

Do that.

Seriously, if you want that GTI, save up for it. I would not go for anything less than the Golf R personally, but to each his own. Do some research on the engine for issues so you can head them off at the pass.

For example, I had the profound displeasure of dealing with an '01 New Beetle with the old 1.8l turbo that had defective ignition coils. Had to replace those. A little prior research would have made things easier for me.

Some of the newer 1.8l turbo 4s had problems with carbon buildup. People would take NMS Passats (2017 and earlier, basically) with those engines in with complaints at 54-60k miles like clockwork. A little preventative maintenance to head off that issue would stop the need for later repairs, and save a good bit of money.

As far as reliability is concerned, I am currently a fan of my 2014 Passat S (2.5l engine) for its reliability. I got one used at 45k miles at a deep discount. About 55k miles later, no major issues to report. I had a battery go out on me, and . . . that's it? There was something else but I can't even remember what it was(cost was low; spending a lot of money would make me remember it). Had to have recall work on it to replace Takata airbags (yay). I ran into a tree that had fallen across the road in the dark about a year-and-a-half ago, and my car won. The tree splintered, taking out only one of my sideview mirrors.

It's a bit sluggish, but it gets the job done.

None of that really applies to the Golf line, per se. But there are probably some really good build qualities in there, somewhere. The trick is to find the weak points and mitigate them before things blow up/fail. Can't say it's the best buy for your money, since there are a lot of options at or below that price. Also, how long has it been since VW significantly updated the Golf R or GTI? The Golf R in particular looks like the specs haven't changed in years. It's overdue for a refresh.

Good points.

Well, the mk7 (2015?-2017) and now mk7.5 (2018+) have seen +10 hp updates for each model. Not that significant, but the trim levels have also brought the performance bits down a couple of trims, where with 2019, you have the performance package (big breaks, ESD, LED lights) standard on all models, which is actually great for the price. That puts the baseline R at 228hp /258 lb/ft. Essentially underpowered a bit for its class, but it does do interior styling and ride comfort, and some argue handling better than most others in the same class. The DSG also makes it significantly zippier, but I'm again leaning back towards a manual. The exterior styling is a bit different, too--mostly subtle (red vs silver GTI badge to designate standard vs performance package--all silver now, I think, because all include the previous gen performance package), and the headlights are quite a bit sexier--the red GTI grill line now follows into both lamp within each headlight housing.

I like the R, but it's really too much for me. I think if I were in Canada, where they are near the same price of the top Autobahn GTI trim, it makes more sense to go with the R, right?

....anyway, all of this may be moot for another couple of weeks anyway. Finally did my taxes this morning, and I didn't realize that my allowances claimed for 2017 (the year I bought the house) would jsut default carry over to 2018. I could have sworn that I read that they wouldn't...so Ignored them and didn't do anything for 2018 (wasn't sure what to do with the new tax law, and assumed they would set back to 0) ....so, that nice $2k check that I got back from excrow essentially went straight back to the feds and the state, after making a bit more IRA contribution than I planned, lol. ....talk about massive underpayment, understandably. --I paid 1 point + full property taxes and all that when purchasing a home in 2017, so claiming allowances for that year compared to last year...lol. Ah well.

Now onto what this damn kitchen will cost me. ...still, almost a wash in terms of available cash, despite yesterday and hey--my mortgage is still 200 bucks cheaper...so there's that. I just need to remember to storm into HR tomorrow and get my damn W4s and fix that crap for this year.

Am I the only one who thinks the GTI looks like a toe? Maybe now you won't be able to unsee it and therefore won't buy one. Mission accomplished?

I'm not sure why you need convincing not to buy one, its wrong wheel drive. Like, maybe for a cheap winter car, but even that gets very frustrating to drive.

lol. don't want to be driving a rear wheel drive car in the rain, which happens a lot around here. I like how the M135i or whatever has a curious tendency to spin out in the rain, on straightaways with your foot down. (yes, I'm sure these are real edge cases).

Anyway, I don't have the funds for a proper RWD car, so it's not in the equation. "Cheap winter car." It will be one car, and for me, this ain't "cheap" by any means.

Zinfamous, You can find lots of Miatas & Mustangs on the used market, many of them are reasonably priced.

That said, GTI is much "nicer" interior, and the hatch can carry more misc crap than either. And even then, Miata and Mustang are both "wrong engine location" since they are not in the correct allocated spot like a 911.
