As far as which brand of contacts, your eye doctor will know best. Also, he'll recommend the solution for you, so don't worry about that either. I've been wearing contacts since 6th grade, and I love them. I wear Focus 1-2 week...but my doctor wants to switch me to O2 Optix to get more Oxygen to my eyes. They aren't yet powerful enough for me though.

What do you mean they aren't powerful enough? They havn't made a prescription good enough for you yet?

yea I think that's what he means. They are relatively new and might not have every prescription availabe. Also, the o2 optix I have noticed do not come in many base curve sizes. I was talking to my eye doctor about the difference in brands, and he told me that even if the base sizes are the same, the actual size of the lense might differ according to the manufacturer. think of them as denim jeans. dkny 32inch waist jeans fit me good, but 32" gap jeans are too tight for me.

Oh, OK.

dear me, you're impatient. i didn't get my contacts until my second year of college.

most eye doctors will have some sample solution in their office. they'll tell you what you should use. i have renu no rub solution, which i buy in bulk at costco.

listen to the eye doctor. all we can give you is our own experiences. our experiences will not be the same as yours. your eye doctor SHOULD know what's best, so listen to them, and don't walk in going "i want this, this, this" based only on our recommendations. if you're going to do that, at least do some research on the lens.

I'm not impatient, its just that it keeps going off the first page, and most people don't read beyond that. I really just wanted to know your experiences, especially with Acuvue 2 Advance contacts, so I can hear some stuff about them, possibly advice.

Begin Rant:

I wore regular Acuvue for 8 years. I went to my optometrist last month and found out they were discontinuing the regular Acuvue series. So I tried the Acuvue Advance. After one week of use I noticed my eyes were sometimes drying up throughout the day. I drove down to San Diego from the Bay Area at that time; right when it gets dark, with 3 hours to go on the trip, my left contact decides to totally wig out on me, and I can't see sh1t. The contact somehow distorts the light in such a a way that the taillights and headlights of other cars become what seems to be like a huge fireworks display to my left eye. I have to drive with one hand and cover my left eye in order to drive safely. Maybe I should have been smarter and brought a pair of glasses or eye drops with me, but after using the regular Acuvue for eight years with absolutely no problems, I was caught off gaurd. Luckily, after being afraid of not making it, and the fear of having to stop somewhere in central LA, I punched my left eye in enough times to get tears flowing to clear my vision up a bit.

Since then, I've also tried Acuvue2. I also have problems with my eyes drying up after using them for more than five days.

On average, I've replaced the Acuvue2/Advance every week, because after that point no amount of cleaning will give me clear vision with them throughout the day.

I've wore glasses more in the past few weeks than I have in the last eight years combined.

I'll try another brand next. If that fails, I'm getting laser surgery soon or I'm switching to glasses full time.

What a pain.

contacts are like jeans, you just have to try them first. if there was a lens that was perfectly comfortable, everyone would be wearing it.

acuvue advance are good lenses, some people love them, others prefer regular acuvue2 over them, others don't like them.

o2 optix and night and day are also good lenses (newer generation and allow more oxygen to your eye).

you won't know how you will like the advance based on other people's opinions...try them for a week and be sure to tell your doctor at the follow up if you liked them or not. if you didn't, i'm sure he/she will suggest or fit you into something else.

hth...

Holy Crap I'm -5 and I'm blind...

I just found out that my insurance is VSP (Vision Service Plan). Does anybody know what they'll cover for contacts?

your vision plan will vary on benefits based on your company. most will have an certain allowance for materials (contacts or glasses) and anything over will be out of pocket. typically will cover 105-110 dollars or something like that.

edit: o2 optix are currently only available in -1.00 to -6.00 powers. they will expand their parameters pretty soon and plan to have toric (astigmastism) in the future.

Pretty sure I've got VSP and they don't cover anything on contacts. Don't know if there are different levels of coverage available or not. Check f@twallet for online deals.
