Im not going to read through the entire thread, but you can look at the Properties of the photos and go into the Details to find out when they were originally taken and with what type of camera and some other information about it. If you have any reason to believe he took the pictures I would have to do something because I would not want it weighing on my concious if he decides to go further with his pedophilia (if that's a word). Otherwise, I'm not sure I'd do anything if it can't be proved he is involved any further than downloading some pictures.

I think all the answers in this thread can be summed up into two parties:

(1) Working Adults - do what's right, and inform your supervisor. illegal or not.
(2) High School Frat Boys - make copies! then delete! don't be a snitch yo!

There are Frats in high school?

um.. ya?

Some of the more important high school fraternities included , Alpha Sigma Phi (ΑΣΦ), Alpha Omega Theta (AΩΘ),Alpha Nu Theta, Alpha Phi (ΑΦ), Alpha Zeta (AZ), Delta Sigma (ΔΣ), Gamma Delta Psi (ΓΔΨ),Alpha Chi(AX), Gamma Eta Kappa (ΓΗΚ), Omega Gamma Delta (ΩΓΔ), Omicron Kappa Pi (ΟΚΠ)Phi Kappa (ΦΚ), Phi Lambda Epsilon [2] (ΦΛΕ), Phi Sigma Chi (ΦΣΧ), Phi Sigma Epsilon (ΦΣΕ), Sigma Phi Omega (ΣΦΩ) and Theta Kappa Omega (ΘΚΩ).

Sigma Alpha Rho (SAR) (ΣAP), Tau Epsilon Chi (TEX), Alpha Mu Tau (AMT),Alpha Chi (A.X.), and Beta Delta Tau (BΔT), are secondary fraternities and sororities respectively that are still active and successful today. SAR was founded in 1917 in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, while TEX was founded in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1921. Alpha Mu Tau (AMT) was founded in 2000 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,Alpha Chi (A.X.)was founded in Memphis,Tennessee in 1999 and Beta Delta Tau (BΔT) was founded in 2004 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. These brother-sister organizations have proved a general exception to the rule of weak and dying organizations as they continue to provide valuable learning and life experiences today. All allow their members to plan, execute, and attend any events that they wish and bring the entire organization together with monthly events.

In Detroit, Michigan, Gamma Psi Nu Musical Fraternity ( established in 1992) and Nu Gamma Delta Music Sorority (established in 1994)are both still very active in the Detroit area. Both organizations boasts an impressive number of chapters, and a lengthy roster of members.

It's a simpler matter than if the material is illegal or not. I'm pretty sure it would be against her employer's policy to use company property to download pornographic or even suggestive images. It's not even about legality or minding your own business at this point.

This is cut and dry. This is a machine for which Mosh is at least temporarily responsible. She can't afford to say nothing if it could ever be tied to her. Mosh -- definitely inform your supervisor at the very least. I'm not sure "IT guy" is good enough.

Apparently you don't pay much attention to kiddie porn witch hunts.

If it even has a slight aroma of child porn, it will cause a shitstorm.

And Mosh is right about getting caught in the crossfire. It really doesn't matter if it all gets 'cleared up' in the long run; the personal and career damage can be instant.

Mosh - is it that there's no policy on this, or that you think the deck may be stacked? Good friends or not, most managers/executives are not going to risk being seen as 'involved' to help out a friend. I think discrete action is required here, with emphasis on 'discrete'.

And on 'action'.

i tried to get mosh to do some discrete action with me a while back. she wasn't having it.

If you're determined to tell somebody because the pictures really worry you, or you feel they're totally inappropriate (which is certainly within your right, regardless of age/intent, those pics have no place on a work PC), I really can't recommend enough AGAINST going through the IT guy. First of all, you've already mentioned he's friendly with the guy who put the pics on there.

Secondly, it's not his job really. He's gonna be required to bring it to the attention of HR/management anyway, so he's just a needless middle man. HR/Management is trained and tasked with this particular duty, if they deem the IT needs to get involved they'll get him involved themselves.

Why do you guys all want her to delete the pics? Is it because you'd want someone to delete your kiddie porn if you got caught? Hmmmmmm.

Holy shit, there's some ignorant people making terrible analogies in this thread. This is NOT "kiddie porn" by any stretch of the imagination. It's teenagers, kissing, FULLY clothed. Is it appropriate in a work environment? Of course not. Don't make this out to be something it isn't though.

I see. I hope you make this distinction clearly when your wife finds your stash of teenagers kissing.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here. No situation will change the fact that what she described isn't "kiddie porn". Your troll-fu is weak.

This should be reported. If the guys are in bed with him, so what? It still needs to be reported. If they are in bed with him the response will probably be something like "Oh, thats just so-so.."

If your HR people take no action, I would leave this dead-beat company. That stuff could be bad news in the future. I would rather not have my name associated with a company like that.

However, I doubt it will be too big of a deal.

If you're gonna do it, do it right. Do NOT bypass the chain of command. Even if you're boss is buddy-buddy with the guy, don't bypass him. True; he may say "Oh, thanks Mosh, I'll talk to him about it" and do nothing, you're in the clear with both work policy and your conscience. If you bypass your boss and go straight to HR or above, you've bypassed the chain, probably violated company policy and will be labeled as a whistleblower/troublemaker. If you follow the reporting chain, you've done the right thing.

ps
The guy is a complete idiot for actually downloading those pics to a work laptop. I've seen some stuff from people who weren't smart enough to delete the Browsing History, but this guy's a tool.
