I don't re-register my car. I just renew the tags for the license plates that I already have.

I guarantee the piece of paper you receive DOES NOT say "licence plate renewal"

I guarantee it says "Vehicle Registration"

You ARE re-registering your vehicle

http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/

You can renew your vehicle tabs and registration up to 6 months before the expiration date. Check your vehicle registration, renewal notice, or email reminder to find the exact date your tabs expire.

I was incorrect..

Colorado Fees aren't based just on Sale Price... It's weight too.

Registration Fees
Fees are based on the empty weight and type of vehicle being registered.
Additional fees may be collected based on county of residence and license plate selected.

Specific Ownership Taxes
These taxes are based on the year of manufacture of the vehicle and the original taxable value which is determined when the vehicle is new and does not change throughout the life of the vehicle.
Ownership tax is in lieu of personal property tax. Vehicles do not need to be operated in order to be assessed this tax.
The ownership tax rate is assessed on the original taxable value and year of service
Original taxable value is 85% of manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP).
The annual specific ownership tax is based on the year of service.

Guess I have no room to complain that registration for my truck here in Ohio went up to $35 this year.

There is no point arguing over the terminology.

Re-registering or "getting new stickers" or whatever you want to call it is simply a yearly TAX you pay on your vehicle based on its value.

Most states use an assessment from a KBB like service.

-----------------------------------

OP, I have heard of a similar experience. A friend of mine had the cost to register his truck increase from one year to the next. The reason: gasoline prices which were close to $5 a gallon drove truck values down and when gasoline prices settled, truck values rose again. I forgot which company my state uses for car assesments but thats whagt they told him.

I don't think mine is based upon its worth. WA just charges me a flat rate AFAIK.

I'm glad they do too. I remember when we registered it for the first time... They were valuing the car at $6k when we only paid $4k for it. (Private party on KBB for what it is at now is $5k+, and almost $7k from dealer)

Waa Waa Waa

Try paying registration fees in Cali then you can come back and complain.

Combating stupidity with an even more extreme example of stupidity doesn't really advance your case. :p

That said, I just renewed my registration on my 2000 Corolla last week, 45 dollars for 1 year, plus 27.75 to get it emissions tested.

Yeah CA is stupid with the vehicle tax. Gotta pay for the free schools, health care, and food for all the illegals somehow.

Wait, why? That makes no sense.

I don't re-register my car. I just renew the tags for the license plates that I already have.

because i get a little envelope from the state every year that says vehicle REGISTRATION renewal. i send in my check and they send by my new registration AND the new yearly sticker i put on my plate. the reg is only good for a year it has a expiration date printed on it. when a cop ask you for your license, insurance and registration... he is checking to see if the info matches what your plate says (make , model year, color), if its expired and who the car belongs to

The bolded is not always true. It can be a set fee as well. That's what WA is. The car can be $600,000 or $600, the fee is the same.

They gotta repair the roads somehow right? Except that they don't do it.

This is the most disturbing part; it's no longer about maintaining government services, it's about how to most efficiently fleece the tax base.

Things won't change until the revolution.

Hmm....I thought it was more expensive the last couple years. And they keep flip-flopping on the emissions requirement crap.

Varies by county though as well. They gotta repair the roads somehow right? Except that they don't do it.

You have no idea how good the roads in CO are until you live elsewhere. Seriously, they took very good care of the roads out there and I never had major issues. Now up here in northern Indiana/Chicago area the roads are a huge issue. They fix some but it's not even close to enough. So, don't bitch ... it's nowhere near as bad in CO as other places.

Just remember that the more liberal an area becomes the more bloodsucking the government becomes to pay for all that "free shit" and the government jobs for those that would likely never be able to hold a job in the private sector.
Are you suggesting a link between vampires and democrats?

Went from $550 last year for the '09 Jeep to 425 this year. (Arapahoe County)
I know that the '04 Jeep was $150 when registered it last fall.

While the paperwork states Registration; you are not getting a new set of plates - ust a new registration expiration tag.

Verbiage/syntax - everyone except Dave is stating the same thing.

If the State Assembly does not authorize tax increase; the funds that are needed come from those that utilize the services.

Dude, STFU if you don't know what you're talking about.

I have $1,100 canceled check receipt for 2005 Hyundai I paid for Tag.

I believe it.....but could you please point out the $1100 fee you paid for the tag from the list of tag fees on the DMV/Sec. of State fee page from IL, linked below?

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/vehicles/basicfees.html

Because, looks to me like there's a flat fee of $99 for vehicles under 4K pounds for a tag.....

And from the IL DMV webpage:

Illinois Fee to Register Car

You’ll pay a $99 car registration fee, provided you order a standard IL license plate. This fee applies to both initial vehicle registration and registration renewal.
However, fees vary if you order a specialized license plate. For example, an Eagle Scout license plate will up your annual car registration fee to $126 and a Support Youth Golf license plate will hike your cost to $139. A five-year Antique Vehicle license plate, on the other hand, will only require $30 to register.
Taken from here:
http://www.illinois-dmv.net/what-is-the-car-registration-fee-in-illinois/

Or from the brochure of IL's DMV:
http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_publications/vsd271.pdf

Now, the city of Chicago does add a fee for a window sticker.......ranging from $75 for a vehicle under 4K pounds to $420 for a truck over 16K pounds.

From here:
http://www.chicityclerk.com/licenses/citystickers.html

Fee schedule:

So, I'm still mystified how you spent $1100 for vehicle registration, unless you're not telling the whole story (typical) and conveniently forgot to include the sales tax you were paying because you bought the car out of state and the DMV made you pay in-state sales tax on the vehicle......hmmmmm?

Sales tax and/or made up story to embellish and play the one upmanship.

I do not think the sales tax would be that high. That would require a sales price (@10%) to be close to 10K. For that year/type car - only a sucker would pay that price.
