Go get a life

Geez, Skoorb is just having fun! Why are some people getting offended?

Do you guys go to comedy clubs where a comedian is going over his routine and shout, "Why don't you stfu and stop making fun of people and telling us how to live"?

It's obvious to me that during work Skoorb was probably bored or something. And he probably does think DVD collecting is stupid so he decided to start a thread about it and try to say his opinion in a funny way.

But some of you guys are taking it way too wrong.

I only buy the movies I really like, ones I plan on watching 2x or more. they only cost like $10, so having them around is more convenient. and then you have something like the Band of Brothers set which I have watched at least 10 times so far ;)

Completely agree. I couldn't fathom spending $20 on a movie. I was paying my cable bill in-store yesterday and I seen The Sopranos Season 5 on sale for $80. $80?

I seen? Good god, how does someone type that, let alone speak it outloud?

I believe that is a Pacific Northwest colloquialism.

The return on the investment is th enjoyment you get frmo watching the movie. Not from trying to sell it to someone else later...

Well said. Now if only people could understand this concept :)

Can't be limited to there, I hear it in the Midwest as well.

So now you're probably thinking "But i don't collect them to have a rare collection. I collect them because I watch them.", but in very few cases do you ever make that money back. You can rent a movie for $4 and buy it for $12-20. Most movies you'll only watch once anyway, because let's face it most movies suck.

So in conclusion most people collect dvds because frankly they have nothing better to spend their money on. They really need to find a more productive and fulfilling hobby than filling shelf after shelf of movie that they'll never get a return on investment with.

You are still stuck on a single definition of the word collect, notably a hobby of acquiriing items for profit. And in you narrowminded world, everyone must be lame. Does your wife "collect" spices? That is, does she have more than ONE spice? How often does she use the saffron of ginger? What a waste!

The best part about your post is when you are about to interject a little common sense into the argument, you turn around and toss that outside the window.

"So now you're probably thinking 'But I don't collect them to have a rare collection. I collect them because i want to watch them." - Oooh now we are getting somewhere. Ok, you see the other point of view. Then all of a sudden ...

"but in very few cases do you ever make that money back." - WTF just happened here?

Well maybe your issue is that you have awful taste in movies and only follow what Hollywood puts out?

Beleive me, I see nothing wrong in collecting movies. I myself collect alot of foreign films, and music concerts. I rewatch them enough to more than pay for themselves.
I stopped going to theatres along time ago as well. If I'm paying $9 to see a movie, and they run 5 minutes of advertisemtn for realtors, food items, coke, and other commercials, and then on top of that
ads for other movies, then why did I have to pay that much to see the movie?

Same thing for music. I have spent a fortune collecting rare records and cds. They get played all of the time, and I still enjoy them.

I guess this is all wasted breath though. You like Linkin Park, which speaks volumes about your lack of culture and taste.

OH I DID! *snap*

Um why do you think I would only watch my DVD's once... I have over 2000 DVDs and 4000 VHS all orginals...
and i watch them quite a bit.. cable TV sucks... and I love movies.... I dont undertand your reasoning... dont want to have go back and rent a movie I want to watch again.....
10 bucks per used DVD is not alot to spend...

I dont share your judgement that most movies suck... movies are a great escape from reality which does suck...

30 bucks every couple weeks is not a huge waste of money.. I usally buy 3 used dvds from hollywood or the movie trading company every month sometimes more...

I only buy movies I saw in the theater and love... so none of them really dont get watched..

I have to tip my hat to you. 6000 movies, all of which you've seen in a theatre. You'd have to go and see a different movie every single day for 16+ years in a row. I don't know how you find time to watch the 6000 DVDs/VHS tapes.

im old.... #1
so yes Ive had more time to collect...
20 years of collecting VHS
and 10+ on DVDs now...

I run my TV all the time if Im home its on.. and I spend every waking hour not at work at home in front of my PC which has a 35 in TV and DVD player next to it. or in my den watching TV or movies...

better than watching TNT or TBS play the same movies over and over and over again...

Your posts get more outrageous and full of BS every day you're here. Assuming you buy 10 DVDs a month, it would take you about 17 years to collect 2000 DVDs. At about $15 a DVD (average), I doubt you've spent $30K on them.

Unless you've got a picture that shows a wall full of DVD movies and VHS tapes with the letters "ATOT" displayed clearly in it, I don't believe a single thing you've posted here.

this is so wrong. First, not everybody collects dvd with the intention of selling it off the next day or year. I collect dvds because I enjoy watching them over and over again and also sharing them with friends/family etc.

I heard that some people believe going to an online forum and averaging 29 posts a day is an even more lame hobby.

I do collect DVDs, but I think it's more analogous to having a library of books. I mean, you only read a few books more than once, but chances are you have a bookshelf. Why would anyone have that? Books are free to borrow from the library! For me, I like building a collection so that I can lend it to friends who haven't watched it. Besides, none of my DVDs cost more than $8 (which would be only two rentals under your price scheme - and I've watched my movies more than twice). And I get some DVDs... um... even cheaper.

there are a lot of new movies or movies you haven't seen one can simply rent off netflix or such. and there are so many tv series now to boot. no point rewatching old stuff when good new material exists.

as opposed to spending countless thousands on unecessary PC upgrades?

pft...try again.

true, you may only watch them once...but once you buy one, you don't exactly have to spend another 12 dollars a year later on a "DVD player" upgrade.

Regardless, it is still WRONG!!!

I've heard people from all over this country speak like that. I attribute it to either stupidity, poor education, or both.

I'm sure the conversation has progressed far in this thread (yah right) but I did not want to read it all so I am responding directly to Skoorb.

My wife and I have ~180 DVD's and for us it was and is worth it to buy them. I have kept track of the price I paid for each DVD and as of right now I am slightly under an average of $7 per DVD. Most of my movies I have watched at least two times so I have about broke even for rental costs and that does not include the few which have been seen 5+ times.

We don't watch more than an hour of TV a MONTH so dvd watching it our "date" time together, we watch 3-4 movies a week together and really like it that way. I also don't plan on re-buying these in HD when those eventually come out because I don't care about the higher res, these look just fine to us.
