I have a lot of DVDs, but I don't get to watch them because I'm too busy stalking you :(

Is stalking you a worthy hobby? :)

DVDrental =$4 plus $4 late feex2 because you got called in while watching and had to rent it another time= $16 to rent a DVD
versus $4-10 to buy a DVD if you bother shopping around.
Netflix is a ripoff if you only have time to watch movies once every few months at unpredictable times. Of course if you watch a ton of movies I'm sure it's a great deal, but they have no options for the value segment.
When it comes to relative expenses of rental vs. purchase, YMMV a lot depending on your employment and lifestyle, as well as how often you like to watch movies. Plus owning the DVD lets me trade them temporarily with my brother like we used to do with video games with the kids down the street. That said I haven't bought or rented a movie in months, even before my TV broke.

Completely agree. I couldn't fathom spending $20 on a movie. I was paying my cable bill in-store yesterday and I seen The Sopranos Season 5 on sale for $80. $80?

Check the prices on all the various editions of the Evil Dead series on DVD. There must a few that are actually worth collecting.

So now you're probably thinking "But i don't collect them to have a rare collection. I collect them because I watch them.", but in very few cases do you ever make that money back. You can rent a movie for $4 and buy it for $12-20. Most movies you'll only watch once anyway, because let's face it most movies suck.

So in conclusion most people collect dvds because frankly they have nothing better to spend their money on. They really need to find a more productive and fulfilling hobby than filling shelf after shelf of movie that they'll never get a return on investment with.

Oh they have better things to spend thier money on, they just arent smart enough to recognize it.

I collect DVDs. I have about 500 so far. :(

I just got Lois & Clark. It's comforting to watch them -- reminds me of a simplier time before the world we now live in (full of news of terrorism, war, beheadings, kidnapped women and children etc)

Although to be honest, if I had a girlfriend, I wouldn't mind spending that money on her. But since I don't this money is gonna be spent on ME, ME, ME, and ME Alone!

QFT.

I used to collect comic books and I collected them for enjoyment. I knew I would never make any money off of them. I still have them (maybe 20 long boxes?) at my condo.

Give me a friggen break. I've got about 110+ DVDs. I rarely if ever go to the movies anymore b/c it costs too much fuggin' money. It normally costs me $15 - $20 to go to the movies with me and my GF and tickets and a couple of sodas. I buy most of my DVD's for ~$10 or less and BOTH of us can sit down and watch the movie in the comfort of my home. That and my mom is always going to pawn shops, yard sales/flea markets where she picks up great DVD's for cheap and she gets me whatever I'm looking for at the time. Hell, the little money grubber even charges me profit for whatever she gets me!!:Q:Q;)

That being said, I watch every movie I have and watch them multiple times. And with their being 4 guys in our house, we all get plenty of use out of my DVD's (and theres as well). I also like the idea of being able to just walk over to the living room and pickup a DVD and start watching it whenever I feel like it.

I would agree in most cases, but I can honestly say that I watch all of my DVDs many times over. I only have about 120 in my collection, but they are all movies I love and probably watch at least once a year, if not more. I think I went through my Band of Brothers set 3 times this past year alone. Plus, I act as the movie rental service for my hall/building. I love movies and will probably always have a good sized collection.

I don't buy movies I'm only going to watch once.

I've watched every one of my 250+ dvd's at least 2-3 times (not counting those chick flicks that belong to my wife. ;)).

Um why do you think I would only watch my DVD's once... I have over 2000 DVDs and 4000 VHS all orginals...
and i watch them quite a bit.. cable TV sucks... and I love movies.... I dont undertand your reasoning... dont want to have go back and rent a movie I want to watch again.....
10 bucks per used DVD is not alot to spend...

I dont share your judgement that most movies suck... movies are a great escape from reality which does suck...

30 bucks every couple weeks is not a huge waste of money.. I usally buy 3 used dvds from hollywood or the movie trading company every month sometimes more...

I only buy movies I saw in the theater and love... so none of them really dont get watched..

I have to tip my hat to you. 6000 movies, all of which you've seen in a theatre. You'd have to go and see a different movie every single day for 16+ years in a row. I don't know how you find time to watch the 6000 DVDs/VHS tapes.

well you will see in my sig i have 300+ DVD's. I don't "collect" them i buy them to watch them. I have a 400 disc DVD changer in which all of them are stored. I have seen them all atleast once and will watch them again. My one goal in life is to have my own home theater for people to enjoy but more importantly for me to enjoy. Get home from a day at the office, go into my theater room with the wife and get to select what movie to watch from a list of X amount. To give you an idea of what I am aiming at this is a website with some examples of whats available, http://www.designcinema.com/. Now if you still think its "stupid" I honestly don't care. I'll never resell them, just enjoy them for my own pleasure.

So what happens when HD-DVDs are widely available? And then 5-10 years down the road something will replace them, and on and on. I'm the type that likes to have the newest in technology, so if I actually collected DVDs I would end up replacing my collection every few years. Money pits like that really really suck, so I don't allow myself to fall into them.

I understand what a lot of you DVD collectors are saying, but personally I'm like Skoorb in that there are very few movies that I want to watch more than once.

I buy movies all the time.
I watch movies a lot, usually at least 4 or 5 movies per week.
I love movies.

Cost of paying for a ticket to see it at the theatre, $8, cost of rental, $4 ....

Cost to purchase
Which I then usually lend to friends, and have friends lend me movies ... $ 10 to $20

I say it's worth it.

there are many movies that are not worth watching more then once, but then there are those that can be watched every couple of months, movies with so many great lines or scenes, that it is fun to watch them over and over again.

I collect DVDs of my favorite movies so that years later I can look back on all the movies I liked such as Band of Brothers and recommend them to other people or rewatch them. A large part of why I collect media is to share it with others.

Very good point, I agree.

Also, Good Point ... I agree.

im old.... #1
so yes Ive had more time to collect...
20 years of collecting VHS
and 10+ on DVDs now...

I run my TV all the time if Im home its on.. and I spend every waking hour not at work at home in front of my PC which has a 35 in TV and DVD player next to it. or in my den watching TV or movies...

better than watching TNT or TBS play the same movies over and over and over again...
