For real. I understand collecting stamps or baseball cards or rare plates or whatever, but "collecting DVDs" is lame, and here's why: They are not a collector's item. Most people's DVD libraries are made up of mass produced movies that have sold millions of copies.

So now you're probably thinking "But i don't collect them to have a rare collection. I collect them because I watch them.", but in very few cases do you ever make that money back. You can rent a movie for $4 and buy it for $12-20. Most movies you'll only watch once anyway, because let's face it most movies suck.

So in conclusion most people collect dvds because frankly they have nothing better to spend their money on. They really need to find a more productive and fulfilling hobby than filling shelf after shelf of movie that they'll never get a return on investment with.

Um why do you think I would only watch my DVD's once... I have over 2000 DVDs and 4000 VHS all orginals...
and i watch them quite a bit.. cable TV sucks... and I love movies.... I dont undertand your reasoning... dont want to have go back and rent a movie I want to watch again.....
10 bucks per used DVD is not alot to spend...

I dont share your judgement that most movies suck... movies are a great escape from reality which does suck...

30 bucks every couple weeks is not a huge waste of money.. I usally buy 3 used dvds from hollywood or the movie trading company every month sometimes more...

I only buy movies I saw in the theater and love... so none of them really dont get watched..

Dude you've spent at least $20,000 on DVDs.

Beleive me, I see nothing wrong in collecting movies. I myself collect alot of foreign films, and music concerts. I rewatch them enough to more than pay for themselves.
I stopped going to theatres along time ago as well. If I'm paying $9 to see a movie, and they run 5 minutes of advertisemtn for realtors, food items, coke, and other commercials, and then on top of that
ads for other movies, then why did I have to pay that much to see the movie?

Same thing for music. I have spent a fortune collecting rare records and cds. They get played all of the time, and I still enjoy them.

I guess this is all wasted breath though. You like Linkin Park, which speaks volumes about your lack of culture and taste.

OH I DID! *snap*

Buying music to listen to repeatedly is not the same as buying movies that will be watched once or twice, MAYBE three times. Also, the 2nd and 3rd viewings are not worth the same as the 1st one.

Completely agree. I couldn't fathom spending $20 on a movie. I was paying my cable bill in-store yesterday and I seen The Sopranos Season 5 on sale for $80. $80?

I seen? Good god, how does someone type that, let alone speak it outloud?

I believe that is a Pacific Northwest colloquialism.

Can't be limited to there, I hear it in the Midwest as well.

Regardless, it is still WRONG!!!

I've heard people from all over this country speak like that. I attribute it to either stupidity, poor education, or both.

Nothing wrong with colloquialisms... but in this case I'm pretty sure he's mistaken widespread stupidity for colloquialism.

I don't smoke or drink or have any bad habits. I do like music and movies. I wait until DVD are on sale for about $10 new. I have about 150 DVDs and I think it is money well spent.

You know what.....I Would agree with the original poster if It was about a month earlier. I recently started my DVD Collection and I LOVE IT. You see, I thought the same thing too that buying DVD's was stupid becuase you will never watch them...Well, I bet you havent owned more than 10 or so dvds I assume, so you didnt really have much of a selection. Everytime I open my closet to see my collection, I have so many choices its simple to choose one I havent seen in a while. I have been watching 1-2 almost everyday since I started my collection. Its quite a great hobby I think. Whatever floats your boat man.

Also - For people saying its expensive blah blah (Especially to you music fags saying DVDs is a waste of time, but music isnt), I can tell you, I havent spent more than $10 on any 1 dvd (and VERY Few @ $10), this includes in Collectors editions, 2 disk sets, etc.. etc.. Most being around $5-7 ea. So Enjoy your $13-15 Music CD's with 1 Single (Unless your into classics, back when music existed).

I like collecting DVDs, I hate going to the theaters, too expensive and rude people who like to talk during the show. The lastest movie I saw, I sat through 1/2 hour of ads of lousy up-coming movies before the actual movie that I paid $10 to see.

It normally costs me $15 - $20 to go to the movies with me and my GF and tickets and a couple of sodas. I buy most of my DVD's for ~$10 or less and BOTH of us can sit down and watch the movie in the comfort of my home. That and my mom is always going to pawn shops, yard sales/flea markets where she picks up great DVD's for cheap and she gets me whatever I'm looking for at the time. Hell, the little money grubber even charges me profit for whatever she gets me!!:Q:Q;)

That being said, I watch every movie I have and watch them multiple times. And with their being 4 guys in our house, we all get plenty of use out of my DVD's (and theres as well). I also like the idea of being able to just walk over to the living room and pickup a DVD and start watching it whenever I feel like it.

One more thing - I really hate ads in the middle of the movies. While at some time, the ads were short enough (even a bit shorter than a short bathroom break), now they are long enough I could wash dishes or something... four times during a typical movie :(

This didn't used to be a dumb hobby, but the fact that you can rent and burn movies now makes it dumb. I love seeing people with 100 or more DVDs. At a guesstimated price of $20, that's $2,000. Jesus.

Exactly. I will say "I seen" every once in a while, in a joking manner (immitating people from the south), but I could never type that in a non-joking context. It's just too trashy.

i wouldnt say i collect dvds, but i do have an extensive library of zombie films.
and i watch them constantly.

edit: i would have to say that i agree for the most part. i see people in best buy with shopping carts full of dvds.
its crazy.
my parents enjoy the tv series on dvd because they dont really have a schedule that allows for every tuesday at 9 pm (for example) free to watch tv.

..it's what you chose to do wit your entertainment dollars. You can go to the movies and spend 50 bucks on tickets..food..parking and come home with nothing at the end of the night..at least with a dvd it's there to watch again. And cheaper then the night out on the town to see the same thing.

Worrying about what other people do is one of the lamest hobbies.

I have a home theater (more than one, technically). My collection is about entetaining guests as much as it is for my own enjoyment.

What good is a home theater if you don't have a broad selection of films on hand to enjoy?

I no longer go to movies. $15 for a DVD beats $50 for tickets and goodies.

Sure, I could rent, but then I'd have to bother returning it, put up with the frustration of getting trashed DVDs that don't work and I could never go back and view it again on a whim.

And sorry, but I'm not a thief. I will not record a rented movie or download a movie.

So that leaves buying the DVD.

I take offense to that!

I put my huge porn DVD collection to good use EVERY SINGLE DAY! :p

All kidding aside, I agree with you. Really I'm collecting a catalog as a legacy token for my children. When they're old enough, I'd like to school them through my list of faves and watch the expression in their eyes as they're about to watch an outstanding movie that they'll remember forever..............Can you imagine the impact of showing them Star Wars for the first time like when we were young? Priceless! :D
