i "collect DVDs" because my mood changes enough that i may desire to watch a comedy now, but in two hours, i may want to watch some sci-fi flick. i plan to eventually watch all the DVDs i own and then to sell them off.

I own all three extended editions of the LotR trilogy, Art of War DVD I got as a gift and a VHS copy of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I have no watched any of these enough to warrent the cost of purchasing them, I've watched them all maybe twice since I got them. So I see where Skoorb is coming from on this one.

But people have a need to collect things, so I can understand that side of things as well. I, being a cheap bastard, only have collected 'free' things. During highschool I collected nintendo roms...I hardly played them, but I had to have them for some reason. When I got into college, I started amassing a huge mp3 collection that I almost never listen too now. (I should really just cut it to a DVD and delete it for hard drive space) And of course, throughout all this I've built a huge collection of pornography...which is honestly (and pathetically) the most worthwhile of all my stupid collections, from a energy input/output standpoint.

So I guess I can't really fault DVD collectors, their hobby is mainstream and seemingly boring but its their choice. I can think of a lot more retarded things people could blow their money on, like performance exhausts for their 1983 civic or designer clothes. But hey, if thats what makes you happy...

Btw...can I borrow that Band of Brothers collection you have and then probably not return it for 4 years?

I seen? Good god, how does someone type that, let alone speak it outloud?

Have you seen his wife? He is better than us.

Warcrow's wife is hotter...no offense Mrs. Skoorb! ;)

Yeah Skoorb, it seems you're so right on this one. I had exact same thoughts. According to my records, I now have 188 movies, that's not much and they aren't in DVD format. But I think I'll just ditch it all. Sigh. Wish I could sell it for something. Now I don't understand why I burned them.

I think that's coz I drew similarities with music, but it in fact is much more usable. Movies simply suck coz it takes so much time to watch them. And, of course, it would be a waste to watch again.

Some people collect stuffs for collecting sake. I bet a lot of you horde porn on your computer but never got the time to watch them all. I brought a bunch of jap. animation but never got the time to watch them all. Now that got got hook into WoW, I wonder if I ever get to watch them all.

So now you're probably thinking "But i don't collect them to have a rare collection. I collect them because I watch them.", but in very few cases do you ever make that money back. You can rent a movie for $4 and buy it for $12-20. Most movies you'll only watch once anyway, because let's face it most movies suck.

So in conclusion most people collect dvds because frankly they have nothing better to spend their money on. They really need to find a more productive and fulfilling hobby than filling shelf after shelf of movie that they'll never get a return on investment with.

Skimmed through the thread, and I agree with everyone else, you're an asshat. :)

Why the hell does everything have to be about money? What's your ROI on your 50,000 posts on AT? Maybe you should find a more productive hobby. :p I have a decent sized collection of DVDs because I like to watch movies, and I don't want to waste time driving to Blockbuster, only to find the movie I want to watch is out of stock.

Nice troll... ;)

Money pits like that really really suck, so I don't allow myself to fall into them.

I understand what a lot of you DVD collectors are saying, but personally I'm like Skoorb in that there are very few movies that I want to watch more than once.

Well there are those of us who enjoy watching movies more than once, so collecting makes sense... in your case it probably wouldn't. As for new technology, I personally won't rebuy many of my current DVDs unless there's a significant improvement over what I've got now.

This is the same guy who was flipping out and talking crap at Nintendo for giving out their old game library for free. With 50K posts, you'd think you'd run out of your 2cents by now, but damn the hits just keep on coming.

Either way, thanks for the info, we will all stop buying DVD because we really thought we were making money off of them!

He doesn't preach. It's just his opinion. People change all the time. Some to the better, some to worse. Now Mr. Skoorb wants to become more productive - quit playing games and collecting movies. If he'd also stop posting here, what would you read? Posts by yourself? Don't shoot yourself in the foot.

Skoorb, for the most part, I agree with you,
however, when we plan to spend a night on the couch, doing nothing but enjoying a good movie,
if I rent a movie and it sucks, I'm happy to have a small "collection" of back-up movies, none of which suck.
ALL of the movies I purchased were because I really enjoy their genre/type of movie they are... for example, I enjoy watching James Bond movies.. have most of them on DVD or VHS. Quite a few comedies - those that are truly funny and enjoyable that I can laugh at over and over, example: Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Princess Bride. I doubt I'll get bored of those.

Also, every once in a while, it's nice to have some decent movies available if we have company and all decide to just watch something.

I never buy dvd's unless I know I love the movie and will watch it over and over. That why I only have 6 dvds that I bought.

Shawshank Redemption
Pulp fiction
Godfather
Scarface
Weekend at Bernies 2
Requiem for a Dream

Anything else I can rent or borrow for a day.

Also, I record a LOT of dvd's... and I plan on recording many more in the near future (when I get around to it)

Reason: small clips of even the most unrelated to education movies can be quite educational...
For example, I used one of the DVD's of the 3rd season of the Simpson's in my physics class this year.
Question: How high did Darryl Strawberry jump ("Homer at the Bat")
Real physics, based on a cartoon character (he jumps completely off screen, calculate height based on time)

You know, without Skoorb here to tell me these things, I might live my life looking like a complete idiot.

How is Canada surviving without him?

it's about time Skoorb stfu and minds his own business. It's one thing to voice your opinion, but he's just sitting up there on his high horse in all of his threads looking down on people that do not live like him or by his standards.

Go get a life
