"Cleopatra should be played by a Black Woman"

What a bunch of uneducated retards.

Cleopatra was not black, none of the Egyptian peoples were. They were Semitic, and Cleopatra wasn't pure Egyptian either. She was half Macedonian (Greek) and half Egyptian.

It's the same story with the dumbfucks who portray pharaonic egypt as being populated exclusively by the "black Africans," when they clearly were not.

It's a shame this is an issue at all, because it suggests that some African-Americans (where this movement is most prevalent) feel they need to pretend that a completely different race/culture was really theirs, when in fact there have been a multitude of very interesting cultures in Africa that have been very advanced.

The Kushites were one of the first kingdoms to use Iron ore consistently for tools and weapons. This technological skill also let them dominate Egypt briefly in the 8-7th centuries.

And the So culture that was a confederation of city states.

There are plenty of "Black" African cultures and empires that Africans can "take pride" in (what's wrong with taking pride in your current country, anyway?), but to try to revise History and say the Egyptians are Black Africans is blatant dishonesty and it reflects the own advocates ignorance and lack of self respect or zeal for the truth.

edit: what's interesting is that there a few African peoples who do not have the "stereotypical" African face, which is correctly called the "Bantu" face which has become genetically prevalent amongst Africans. The Zhun/Twasi of the Kalahari desert are one example of a different genetic facial makeup.

She would probably be a decent fit, but that's not the point. Cleopatra wasn't black, at no point between 3,000 and 1,000 B.C. was Egypt dominated by Bantu Africans.

Halle Berry is white.*

*i still hate how being 50% anything not white makes you not white.

Perhaps the OP is correct, and it's also highly unlikely that teh Jesus wasn't the pretty white boy as he's been portrayed by anglo Christianity either...

I know you must feel special having just recently been educated, but back in '50's when America was "Christian" and all, this was fairly common knowledge as well.

On African American blogs and message boards, people are speaking out against the casting of Jolie in a role they believe should go to an actress of color

African Americans are some of the whiniest, most ignorant people the world has ever seen. I like black folks much better.

I like how in every diverse advertisement-like thing, there is always an equal number of whites, blacks, asians, hispanics and etc. When in America blacks only make up 13% of the population.

The author is not saying the woman should definately be a black woman, what he is saying is that a black woman would be a better fit for the part than a white woman. And I don't know if that is necessarily true or false. Some Egyptian women are tanned and some not. I would assume in those days, before sunscreens, most folks had a darker complexion. Its good debate........

I definately would rather see Halle over someone like Jolie. There are some seriously good looking black women in Hollywood that easily rival in the looks department any other race of woman. No one race has a corner market on beauty in Hollywood.

Herodotus commented on the beauty of the Ethiopians around 400 BC (another name for the 4Kushites), and they were considered among the most beautiful of peoples in the world.

I agree with the OP. There's no point in adopting false history. While there could accurately be some black Africans in the storytelling of Cleopatra, Cleopatra herself was not black.

In spite of you trying to disguise condescension with education , you're really just the same sort of racist prick you complain of.
Nothing is more reprehensible than someone who claims there is historical justification for their racist ideology.

There is no Racist Pass that allows you to hate White people with impunity.
Racism is Racism.

Listen very closely:

Cleopatra was NOT black in any way, shape or form. She was Greek and Semitic.

Egyptians were NOT black, they were Semitic. They had, within their culture, a MINORITY of sub Saharan blacks during the later dynasties, but the main populace was light skinned.

Royalty was NEVER "tanned." It was considered low brow and only the workers were tanned. Royalty and later, upper classes throughout the ages did everything they could to stay out of the sun. It's not a debate at all: The royal families, ESPECIALLY the Greek Ptolemies, would have had pale complexions.

Portraying Cleopatra as black would be like casting Rasa Parks or Mohammad Ali with a white person. "Better fit" my ass. Essence calling for a black woman to play Cleopatra is akin to a whites only mag calling for a white man to play Ali. Both are racist, period.

The argument in Essence is just plain ignorant and you supporting it only shows your racism.
