An 80-year-old Chicago man shot and killed an armed man who broke into his two-story house in a pre-dawn home invasion Wednesday on the city's West Side.

At about 5:20 a.m., the homeowner and his wife, also in her 80s, discovered the intruder entering their home through a back door. The homeowner, who had a gun, confronted and killed the burglar on the doorstep, police said. Cops said the intruder also fired his gun during the struggle.

"It's a good thing they had a gun, or they might be dead," said Curtis Thompson, who lives next door to the couple, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Neighbors described the elderly couple, who both walk with canes, as pillars of the community in Garfield Park, where home invasions have been all too frequent.

Their neighbor, Shaquite Johnson, told MyFoxChicago that the two are "heroes" for fighting off the attacker — and that the shooting means there is "one less criminal" walking the streets.
"They don't bother no one, so why would anyone do that to them?" she said.

Relatives of the couple told the Sun Times that the man is an Army veteran, his wife a former nurse. Police said neither the man nor the woman was injured in the attack.

The assailant, who was described by police as being in his 30s, was found slumped on the back doorstep of the couple's house, removed four hours after the shooting, the Sun Times reported.

No charges have been filed against the homeowner, but Chicago currently has a statute outlawing the possession of handguns. Its legality is currently being decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

A high-profile Chicago attorney has already stepped forward offering to represent the man pro bono if he faces charges for possessing a weapon.

"Self-defense isn't just a right, it's a duty," said attorney Joel Brodsky. "If this man is prosecuted for saving his own life it's not just a travesty, it's justice turned inside out."

Grandpas defending themselves and their homes have become a real problem in this country. What more can we do to get this gun problem under control and make the world safe for home invaders again?

The old man should be sued. Clearly too old to own a gun and needs to learn restraint when someone breaks into his home.

The title of the thread was hilarious. I read it as "ILLEGAL GUN USED IN CRIME!" ...which is a duh and a half. But it's just a sad story about a guy that has to break the law to keep himself safe. What a fucked up country.

What's the point of gun control again? To make it a fair fight for unarmed criminals? I think that's the excuse. It can't be so that they can have more power over us.

Garfield Park is one of the worst neighborhoods in Chicago. All these incidents usually occur in a small, poor, isolated areas. See the 80 murders one summer in Englewood. People have no reason to go to these areas, and will generally not be affected by any significant crime. You just have to remember how big Chicago is, with ~3 million people living within it's borders you are bound to have a bad area or two.

What, he couldn't have used a legal shotgun to shoot the guy? The reason they are trying to ban handguns is they are easily concealable by criminals and are used in most murders.

As soon as the burglar fired a gun inside of their house, said burglar fully deserved to be shot and shot dead. Even as a so called liberal, nothing trumps the right of self dense.

IMHO, Chicago maybe has a right to ban the carrying of firearms outside of the my house is my castle domain, but not within anyone's castle.

God only knows how many years those two elderly citizens had a gun within their own home and never used it, almost certainly long before Chicago passed a gun ban, but if nothing else its proved to be an excellent investment that has now marginally improved the gene pool in Chicago.

I for one will be outraged if they are ever prosecuted.

Why do you condone murderous thugs carrying handguns. And I'm the loony one?
I never said the old people should be prosecuted for doing the right thing.
The vast majority of gun crimes are committed with handguns and America has a problem with gun crime in case you haven't noticed.

News flash: gun bans only hamper the ability of honest citizens to defend themselves. Criminals will have access to guns, regardless of any laws in place.

The U.S. should be the safest place in the world then, with all of the guns in private hands.

No, he's just doing his normal thing. He makes an idiotic post, gets called out and made to look like a fool, then disappears from the thread. Business as usual...

Speaking of idiots, do you have anything to add to the discussion or are you merely a troll?

It's not the only factor. The primary issue is not a gun. If it not a gun, it would be a knife, if not a knife, then it would be whoever is bigger.

It is a sense of entitlement and handout that makes people think they can just take things.

We want people to be less greedy, yet we hand everything to them via welfare.

So eliminating welfare will make us safer? If you believe that I have a bridge to sell you, real cheap.

Is the view from the left the corner room with no windows?

Maybe, just MAYBE, there are other solutions than the water hose approach (it's on, it's off).

Hint : try making people WORK for their welfare check a little. I said it. The W word that makes liberals writhe in pain.
