I've always thought Asian names were pretty easy.

thai names
/end thread

Yes but they do change their names. They all use nicknames. Some examples: Fluke ("like fuck up"), Punch, Sign, and I think half of the country of Thailand is named "A"

That's a good attitude. However, if you read the article, the congresswoman's remarks were made after some guy whined about the dual name system. If you're willing to work hard to explain your two name system, go ahead. Just don't expect government to accommodate you.

Ng? What the hell kind of name is that?

 It's pronounced ing. At least it's not some weird ass eastern euro name.

LOL no kidding, I knew a Polish guy named Grzegorz. I guess "z" is a vowel in Polish? :D

But seriously? WTF, it's not that hard to learn foreign names. Just takes a little longer. But many Chinese names are shorter than American/Western European names. I don't see a problem as long as they consistently use the same name on all legal documentation. What is this, Ellis Island?

Yeah, the Polish are weird like that... they keep their Slavic name, spelling and all, and if you're not Polish or know common Polish pronunciation rules, you won't know how the hell to pronounce it.

At least other Slavic languages, when writing their name in English, basically spell out the pronunciation for you, like English. Helps that basically all other Slavic languages have quite a few non-Latin letters, whereas I think Polish has very few, and they might swap letters with those that are somewhat similar in English when printing in English alphabet.

I have no problem with tough names, so long as you don't mind if I give you a nickname :p

Why does someone voting need to pronounce a name? You check the id, and see if it matches.

You didn't read the article. There was an asian guy complaining because many asians put their non-legal name on their IDs and because of this, they would have a hard time registering. The congresswoman rightly said that if they wanted to avoid an issue, change your name!

Or else, put your freaking legal name on the stupid ID.

No. Everyone should be able to Spell everyone elses name simply by sound alone. Which is why "John" has to go.

Another Polish last name, someone I knew throughout school: Czysz.
"Chish" is how it was pronounced.

Also, my CalcII professor was from China. Dr. Mingying Lu.
Dr. Lu. I'm sure even Ms. Betty Brown could handle that.

(Dr. Lu was....well, daaamn she must have spent a long time in college, or else just took to the stuff very well. B.S. in Mathematics. M.S. in Applied Mathematics. M.S. in Computer Science. Ph.D. in Mathematics. )

I read it, but I missed that part. I guess I tend to agree with Brown. It's the immigrant's own fault for selling out their given name.
