Caught my roommate smoking pot in his room lastnight...

all your options show a lack of maturity. Be a man and talk to him about it. If you let him smoke on the porch then let that continue and tell him to keep it outside. But if you let him smoke out back, what is the really big deal about inside?

not his house he just rents, he knows the rule. warn him not to do it again and if he does kick his ass out.

damn why do you people make this so hard.

As a Canadian I find the American treatment of pot rather bizarre. I rather have a pot smoker live in my place than a drinker or cigarette smoker.

Depends what you think is the negatives of his smoking pot on your property, I suppose? It is your property and so your rules are the ones he should follow, but I think you're really blowing things out of proportion. What's the worst that could happen if he continued?

For me as a landlord........ it's not the pot smoking..... he can smoke outside. But the smokin g inside really would tee me off. It's relly hard if not impossible to get the smoke smell out (funk febreeze 😛). Just keep that sh!t outside.

Cheers,
Aquaman

A fresh coat of paint will get rid of the pot smell once he moves out. Problem solved.

I think the OP should do a bong hit and stop being such a tool.

Paint? Are you kidding?

You are talking about re-painting their place to get rid of the smell? Have you ever been around pot?

hmmm, some people are claiming it's easy to get the smell of pot out of a room, but I wonder if that's just because they've become used to it. Anytime I've visited a house/room of someone that habitually smokes anything, including pot, I can smell it even if they aren't lighting up.

QFT.

BS. pot smoke doesn't linger liek tobacco. It's spilling bong water, tracking resin everyhwere that causes the funk. Interesting, occurences of bongs being tipped onto carpets increase with frequency as a direct proportion to bong usage 😉

Those little ozonators, or whatever they're called, work very well. Also, opening a window is just as effective.

Oh...... I think I know a thing or two about pot smell......... seeing that I live in the number 1 pot growing area in Canada (if not the entire North America).

If your rental agreement said no smoking, then there's no smoking. You shouldn't have to let someone smoke in there. Talk to him, ask him not to do it again, say you really aren't comfortable with smoking inside and why. If he can't understand that, he's not really much of a friend and I wouldn't have many qualms about giving him the boot.

I don't personally have a problem with pot smoking, but I can understand that viewpoint, it's your property (your parents, but close enough), and you're sharing space with him. You have a right to live how you want in your property, particularly if it was spelled out in the lease/rental agreement.

Pot is basically harmless.

Thoughts?

There is a significant and growing body of evidence on the relationship between mental illness and cannabis. Strong
associations are consistently found between mental illness and cannabis ? but this is not the same as a causal link.

The article you provided negates itself with this statement.

It never provides an answer to whether increased cannabis use is a cause or a result of mental illness.

talk to him first and threaten police action, if he ever gets busted you go down with him. If he keeps doing it, narc him hehe

Are you kidding me?

Threaten a long time friend by telling him you will call the cops on him for smoking weed? Do you live under a rock?

I did the same in college, not a damn thing wrong with it. It's called disrespect, his friend cares little of his friendship when he starts lighting up when he was intently told not to. The truth of the matter is, if the cops were ever called, he goes to jail too.

Life Lesson: Look out for number one, everyone else does.

Go up to him and say "Hey man, I noticed your room smelled like smoke the other night. I don't know exactly what was going on and I don't care that much. However if you are going to smoke, please don't do it inside. I don't want smoke of any kind in this house as we do not own it. Thanks"

Simple enough.

i didnt read any previous posts...

OP: you're an idiot. so he broke the rules, ****** happens. ****** TALK TO HIM about it and try to resolve the problem. give him osme kind of ultimatum (since it is your place) like...if i catch you smoking inside again then i'm kicking you out...or something along those lines...he should respect your wishes and smoke outside.

Well his parents DO own it, so say exactly what is above but say that your parents have explicity banned smoking of any form inside the house since day one.

Haha, wow, I can't believe some of these posts.

Bottom line- if the roommate new smoking was not allowed then the roommate is violating the terms of the rental agreement. It doesn't matter if it's cigarettes or marijuana. No smoking is no smoking.

To the moron who said that the roommate has a right to privacy in his room- BULLSHIT. For one, last I checked, in the United States marijuana is illegal, performing illegal activities in a rental unit almost always violates any rental agreement one may have. Two, as I stated in my first paragraph, if there is to be no smoking then there is to be NO smoking.

I'm all for the legalization of marijuana, but I'm also a believer in rules...

Actually (assuming he's not dealing, and that he doesn't have > 1oz in his posession), he would likely just get a posession ticket.

Your parents own the place - and they continue to pay for the home (more then likely they still owe on it) but with the $600 you take it and do whatever you want with it. Your spoiled. He pays for his own room - what he wants to do in his room is his own concern - you unlocked his door for what reason? What activity did you suspect, I sure as hell wouldn't be talking about the iphone if you just randomly unlocked my door - landlord or not, you better have a DAMN good reason for barging in there, and if I'm smoking pot, that's my decision - deal with it.
