BS. pot smoke doesn't linger liek tobacco. It's spilling bong water, tracking resin everyhwere that causes the funk. Interesting, occurences of bongs being tipped onto carpets increase with frequency as a direct proportion to bong usage
Those little ozonators, or whatever they're called, work very well. Also, opening a window is just as effective.
Oh...... I think I know a thing or two about pot smell......... seeing that I live in the number 1 pot growing area in Canada (if not the entire North America).

If your rental agreement said no smoking, then there's no smoking. You shouldn't have to let someone smoke in there. Talk to him, ask him not to do it again, say you really aren't comfortable with smoking inside and why. If he can't understand that, he's not really much of a friend and I wouldn't have many qualms about giving him the boot.
I don't personally have a problem with pot smoking, but I can understand that viewpoint, it's your property (your parents, but close enough), and you're sharing space with him. You have a right to live how you want in your property, particularly if it was spelled out in the lease/rental agreement.

I did the same in college, not a damn thing wrong with it. It's called disrespect, his friend cares little of his friendship when he starts lighting up when he was intently told not to. The truth of the matter is, if the cops were ever called, he goes to jail too.

OP: you're an idiot. so he broke the rules, ****** happens. ****** TALK TO HIM about it and try to resolve the problem. give him osme kind of ultimatum (since it is your place) like...if i catch you smoking inside again then i'm kicking you out...or something along those lines...he should respect your wishes and smoke outside.

Well his parents DO own it, so say exactly what is above but say that your parents have explicity banned smoking of any form inside the house since day one.

Bottom line- if the roommate new smoking was not allowed then the roommate is violating the terms of the rental agreement. It doesn't matter if it's cigarettes or marijuana. No smoking is no smoking.

For one, last I checked, in the United States marijuana is illegal, performing illegal activities in a rental unit almost always violates any rental agreement one may have. I'm all for the legalization of marijuana, but I'm also a believer in rules...

Your parents own the place - and they continue to pay for the home (more then likely they still owe on it) but with the $600 you take it and do whatever you want with it. Your spoiled. He pays for his own room - what he wants to do in his room is his own concern - you unlocked his door for what reason? What activity did you suspect, I sure as hell wouldn't be talking about the iphone if you just randomly unlocked my door - landlord or not, you better have a DAMN good reason for barging in there, and if I'm smoking pot, that's my decision - deal with it.
