Contrary to popular myth, cats can be very attentive and can be trained.
Every cat I have had since childhood has been a lap cat. They have been trained to never get on counters, trash cans or table tops. And trained to scratch no where else but a scratching post. Placement of the post(s) is key. My cats have always come when I call them and are very loving. They never bite or scratch unless provoked.
The key to keeping them from biting and scratching you is to NEVER use your hands to play with them, or punish them. Make your hands an ABSOLUTE no bite and no scratch zone. Use toys to play with them but NEVER your body. When they are kittens it takes a lot of work to teach them that your hand is not a toy, but it is worth it later when they grow up. My cats learned to lick my hands instead of biting them when they don't like how I'm petting or holding them. And I in turn respect their wishes and do not keep provoking them until they bite.
For those with virtually feral cats that are uncontrollable, a long reaching water squirt bottle is your key to keeping them from going places and doing things you don't want them to. And it's perfect for the lazy because you don't have to get up to chase them down.
Cats do not automatically like and trust you. You must befriend them and earn their trust and respect. Once you do, you'll find they are not the animals you thought they were.
Cats are willful and persistent. The only way to earn their respect is to be just as willful and persistent. The only way to earn their trust is to be fair and consistent. If you are unpredictable in how you treat them they will not trust you. If you like freaking your cat out and treating them like a toy, rather than a thinking, feeling being, they will not trust you.
Finally, take as much time to learn to read their tail as you expect them to learn the few key words like "food" and "come." They will respect you when you learn to read their tail. It's how they communicate. And be as responsive to their requests as you expect them to be to yours.
Cats, unlike dogs, require mutual respect and trust. With a cat, you are not a master or leader of the pack, you are a mutual friend and must earn that.
And from what landlord friends tell me, dogs are much more destructive to property than cats.
